Singapore start-up on a green mission to keep mobile phones in use for longer

Singaporeans are replacing their phones every 2.7 years, contributing to some 2.9 million mobile phones being stowed away, a new study shows.
But one Singapore start-up is hoping to change this and keep phones in circulation for five years here. This will be even longer than the global smartphone replacement cycle of 3.5 years on average.
Cinch plans to meet this target by renting out instead of selling the devices to consumers, ensuring that the returned units at the end of the rental period are refurbished to get a new lease of life with another user.
"We're trying to extend the useful life of these devices beyond the average refresh rate," said Mr Mahir Hamid, chief executive and co-founder of Cinch, which commissioned the study to better understand consumer behaviour.
Its study, conducted between late 2024 and early 2025, involved interviews with firms that handle e-waste and used devices, as well as a survey of 500 Singapore-based respondents.
Fresh from raising US$28.8 million (S$37 million) in funding led by Monk's Hill Ventures, Cinch is now actively pursuing consumers, letting them pay a monthly fee to rent the latest premium models of phones, laptops and other devices. Cinch will also foot 90 per cent of the repair cost of devices damaged due to accidents.
For instance, the latest Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge with 512GB storage is available from Cinch for a rental fee of $70 a month over two years. At the end of two years, consumers would have paid $1,680. The same model can be bought from Samsung for $1,808.
An Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max with 512GB storage can be rented from Cinch for $120 a month over 12 months. This will amount to a total of $1,440 at the end of the year. The same model costs $2,199 upfront from the Apple store.
Customers can also buy direct from Samsung and Apple with an interest-free instalment plan, but it would require them to have a credit card from specific banks such as DBS, OCBC or UOB.
"There is a massive segment of the population for which a $2,000 to $3,000 purchase can be a significant proportion of their monthly salary," said Mr Hamid. "A subscription model allows them to access the premium device."
Cinch, which has been operating here since 2023, has been leasing mostly to businesses such as those in the retail, logistics, information technology and public relations sectors. Around 10,000 devices such as laptops, smartphones and tablets have been leased, most of which were returned and refurbished for a second or third customer.
"Every refurbished unit needs to be as good as new," said Mr Hamid. "If it doesn't meet our standards, it doesn't go back into circulation."
He said that all returned devices undergo a professional diagnostic sweep and complete data wipe so users do not have to worry about privacy leaks.
Customers can buy their rented devices from Cinch if they wish, but it would likely cost more than buying from retailers such as Shopee or Lazada, said Mr Hamid, urging users to rent instead.
Cinch has also partnered with waste management firm Alba Group since the start of 2025 to collect and recycle devices that can no longer be refurbished for new leases. During recycling, valuable materials such as precious metals and plastics are extracted from the e-waste.
Singapore generates more than 60,000 tonnes of e-waste a year, according to a report by the National Environment Agency in 2018. This is equivalent to 73 mobile phones disposed of per person in Singapore.
Slowing down the device replacement cycle will reduce the overall volume of electronic waste that needs to be collected, sorted and processed, an Alba spokesperson told The Straits Times.
"Alba supports efforts like Cinch's to keep electronic devices in circulation for a longer period, as it aligns with our mission to reduce e-waste and promote a circular economy in Singapore," said the spokesperson.

The leasing of laptops, smartphones and tablets has become a standard practice among some businesses, as it allows them to access the latest technology without incurring huge upfront costs. Leasing is also a way of reducing depreciating assets.
Leasing firms typically cover a device's configuration, maintenance, repair and eco-friendly disposal.
Telcos Singtel and StarHub have been leasing devices to businesses since 2020 and 2021 respectively, while M1 does so only as part of a more comprehensive suite of tech services.
Singtel started leasing devices to consumers in 2018, but ceased the programme in 2022. Mr Keith Leong, Singtel's managing director of enterprise, said consumers find that they get better value from buying devices bundled with mobile plans. But businesses in sectors such as government, infocomm and aviation continue to lease from Singtel.
While the device leasing meets the specific needs of some businesses, many consumers still choose to buy devices as it gives them full ownership and control, which can be cost-effective over the long run, said Mr Leong.
"Ultimately, both models provide valuable pathways to equip a mobile workforce effectively," he said.
Other rental firms such as Circular and ITEZ.SG have also been in the market since 2021 to wean consumers from device ownership. Apart from renting out phones, laptop, and gaming consoles, ITEZ.SG also rents out home appliances such as digital door locks and washing machines.
Leasing an iPhone 16 Pro Max with 512GB storage space would cost between $69 and $82 a month for two years from Circular, depending on the phone's condition. The same model would cost between $92 and $99 a month for two years from ITEZ.SG.
Cinch's adviser Arvin Singh said that Netflix and Grab have proven that ownership of storage discs and cars, respectively, is not essential.
"Netflix for many years now has disrupted ownership of DVDs and hardware... So I think it's not a strange concept for consumers. When it comes to phones, maybe a bit more education is required," said Mr Singh.
However, Ms Tracy Tsai, vice-president analyst of consulting firm Gartner, said that phones cannot be compared to DVDs, cars or bicycles as phones carry confidential personal data.
The cost-effectiveness of renting also comes into question if users upgrade frequently, she added. "But if users want to chase the latest phone every year, renting might be less of an issue."

The company on June 20 launched new models based on Oakley's HSTN design, marking the company's first expansion away from Ray-Ban for its display-free glasses. Like the original models, the Oakley versions can make and take phone calls, play music, take pictures and video and use Meta's artificial intelligence to answer questions about the surrounding environment. The new versions, which start at US$399 (S$513) and go up to US$499 for a limited edition model with gold-colored accents, include about double the battery life, video-recording at 3K resolution and water resistance. 'We are increasingly seeing performance use cases with the Ray-Bans like people wearing them on roller coasters, cycling and being around water, so we're trying to lean into that,' says Mr Alex Himel, the company's vice-president in charge of wearables, in an interview. Arriving at its second glasses brand was far from a sure thing. Meta's first glasses, the Ray-Ban Stories, flopped in 2021. But its follow-up version in 2023 was a massive success, giving the social networking giant a real potential hardware stronghold in the artificial intelligence race. 'It was crazy. Popularity caught us by surprise a bit,' Mr Himel said. The Ray-Bans were 'going to be the last display-less pair of glasses. We said we'll take two swings at it, and if it doesn't work we'll go all-in on augmented reality'. Instead, beyond the latest Oakley model, the company has a multi-year road map for the display-less category and is planning a follow-up pair of Oakley glasses based on the Sphera design for later in 2025 , according to people with knowledge of the matter. That pair will be aimed at cyclists and have a centred camera. The model on June 20 has a camera positioned in the upper corner like the Ray-Ban version. The display-free glasses are one component of the overall Meta AI hardware strategy. The company is planning to introduce higher-end glasses with a display to view notifications and the camera view finder later in 202 5, Bloomberg News has reported. In 2027, it aims to roll out its first true augmented reality glasses, which will blend digital apps with the real world. Meta's form-factor has caught on, with several other technology companies working on competitors. Apple Inc. is planning to introduce its first glasses product at the end of 2026, Bloomberg News has reported. That device will operate similarly to the Meta product but better synchronise with the rest of the Apple ecosystem. Inc. also sells glasses, but their current models lack cameras. Mr Himel, who said Meta has sold millions of glasses and has a 'nice, increasing multiple' of purchases on a year-over-year basis each week, attributed the increased popularity to the Ray-Bans improving across a large number of 'small things.' He said the audio quality and microphones started to surpass standalone earbuds, while the camera and AI quality also improved. Still, Mr Himel said battery life remains the 'number one complaint' about the Ray-Ban versions. The new Oakley models can run for 8 hours on a single charge, with the charging case holding 48 hours of juice. 'You should expect a 40 per cent bump with these' he says, attributing the improvement to new battery chemistry and software optimisations – not larger battery packs. Like Ray-Ban, Oakley is owned by EssilorLuxottica SA, which calls Oakley its second most popular brand after Ray-Ban. Mr Himel said Meta will roll out new brands under the EssilorLuxottica portfolio 'as fast as we can. 'We're going to have to move very quickly because in the world of fashion, stuff moves very quickly,' he says. 'The stuff that is a hit right now might not be a year from now. We need to be fast to hit all the brands that we'd like to.' The first Oakley model, becoming available for pre-order on July 11, will be the US$499 limited edition pair. The US$399 versions – which come in grey, black, brown and clear colors – will be released in the coming months. There will be versions with clear, transition and polarised lenses. Like with the Ray-Bans, users can swap the lenses for prescription optics. The glasses will be available in the US, Canada, UK, Ireland, France, Italy, Spain, Austria, Belgium, Australia, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Denmark, according to Meta. US may target Samsung, Hynix, TSMC operations in China: sources

[BENGALURU] The US Department of Commerce is considering revoking authorisations granted in recent years to global chipmakers Samsung, SK Hynix and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), making it more difficult for them to receive US goods and technology at their plants in China, according to sources familiar with the matter. The chances of the United States withdrawing the authorisations are unclear. But with such a move, it would be harder for foreign chipmakers to operate in China, where they produce semiconductors used in a wide range of industries. A White House official said the United States was 'just laying the groundwork' in case the truce reached between the two countries fell apart. But the official expressed confidence that the trade agreement would go forward and that rare earths would flow from China, as agreed. 'There is currently no intention of deploying this tactic,' the official said. 'It's another tool we want in our toolbox in case either this agreement falls through or any other catalyst throws a wrench in bilateral relations.' Shares of US chip equipment makers that supply plants in China fell when The Wall Street Journal first reported the news earlier on Friday (Jun 20). KLA dropped 2.4 per cent, Lam Research fell 1.9 per cent and Applied Materials sank 2 per cent. Shares of Micron, a major competitor to Samsung and SK Hynix in the memory chip sector, rose 1.5 per cent. A TSMC spokesperson declined to comment. Samsung and Hynix did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Lam Research, KLA and Applied Materials did not immediately respond, either. Sign Up Sign Up In October 2022, after the United States placed sweeping restrictions on US chipmaking equipment to China, it gave foreign manufacturers such as Samsung and Hynix letters authorising them to receive goods. In 2023 and 2024, the companies received what is known as Validated End User (VEU) status in order to continue the trade. A company with VEU status is able to receive designated goods from a US company without the supplier obtaining multiple export licenses to ship to them. VEU status enables entities to receive US-controlled products and technologies 'more easily, quickly and reliably', as the Commerce Department website puts it. The VEU authorisations come with conditions, a source familiar with the matter said, including prohibitions on certain equipment and reporting requirements. 'Chipmakers will still be able to operate in China,' a Commerce Department spokesperson said in a statement when asked about the possible revocations. 'The new enforcement mechanisms on chips mirror licensing requirements that apply to other semiconductor companies that export to China and ensure the United States has an equal and reciprocal process.' Industry sources said that if it became more difficult for US semiconductor equipment companies to ship to foreign multinationals, it would only help domestic Chinese competitors. Giving an update on the SG Eco Fund, a $50 million grant launched in November 2020, Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Ms Grace Fu said the fund has since engaged over 700,000 people on sustainability-related efforts. The initiatives span areas like waste reduction, community growing of food, conservation of nature and sustainability education. Speaking at an event held at Vidacity to mark SG Eco Fund's fifth anniversary, Ms Fu said that climate action does not solely depend on government policies, but also the everyday choices Singaporeans make. 'This was why we launched the SG Eco Fund five years ago, recognising that policies itself is insufficient. We really need ground action... we need acceptance on the ground,' she said. Grant recipient Altimate Nutrition used the fund to promote awareness of insect-based protein before their products were even approved for sale by the Singapore Food Agency. Co-founder Mr Gavriel Tan, 23, said the start-up received funding in late 2023 and used it to run educational workshops in schools, introducing students to the concept of edible insects as an alternative and sustainable protein source. 'So we focused on education first, especially among students, who are more open-minded and represent the next generation of consumers,' he said. With the grant, the company conducted 20 workshops, and over time, expanded to more than 80 sessions reaching about 800 students across primary to tertiary levels. Mr Tan told The Straits Times that around 75 per cent of participants were willing to try insect-based products after learning about their sustainability benefits and sampling them during the sessions. The company now plans to apply for a larger grant to explore farming crickets locally. Ms Fu said that a recent report on the impact of SG Eco Fund showed that 90 per cent of those surveyed were satisfied with the activities, and a majority of them were more ready to adopt sustainable practices. She said that she was encouraged to see more projects taking root in communities and growing beyond their initial scope. For example, grant recipient Repair Kopitiam, trained residents to become handymen and help their neighbours during the pandemic. Today, Repair Clinics and Repair Kampungs run at more than 10 locations, with 300 coaches and 6,000 volunteers to combat throwaway culture. Project Black Gold, a community food scrap composting initiative, used the funding to conduct community composting events to teach residents how to reduce and recycle food waste. It has now expanded to over 30 composting clubs across Singapore. Ms Fu also announced an enhancement to the fund's Sprout category, which supports smaller-scale projects. The maximum grant amount for projects submitted in 2025 has been raised from $8,000 to $30,000. 'We did this in response to your desire to organise bigger projects and to reach out to more members of the community. 'And in part to celebrate the SG60 spirit, where each one of us can play our part in building Singapore,' she said. A spokeswoman for the Ministry of Sustainability and the Environment said that the focus of SG Eco Fund is to outreach to as many people as possible. The fund utilisation will depend on the project take up rate and there is currently no expiration date.
