Samana crash: Driver of truck that killed 5 school kids arrested

Police on Thursday arrested the driver of a tipper truck that rammed into a Toyota Innova, killing six occupants of the car — the driver and five schoolchildren — on the Patiala-Samana road.
The driver, Bhupinder Singh, along with the truck's owners, Randhir Singh and Davinder Singh, were booked under Section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The truck owners are, however, yet to be taken into custody.
Police sources shared that the fitness certificate, pollution certificate and insurance of the truck had expired. Besides, the truck owners had not paid any road tax.
Five schoolchildren and the driver of their car, which ferried them daily to school, were killed when the tipper had collided with the vehicle head-on.
A pall of grief descended on Samana city as the five children were cremated at the local cremation ground. Locals raised slogans against the state government, condemning its failure to regulate speeding by trucks.
Patiala MP Dr Dharmavira Gandhi, who attended the cremation, expressed deep condolences to the grieving families. Calling the loss 'unbearable', he assured to take up the matter with Union transport minister Nitin Gadkari and demand the widening of the Patiala-Samana Road to prevent such accidents in future.
Govt enforces measures for road safety
Punjab health minister and Patiala Rural MLA Dr Balbir Singh convened an emergency meeting with senior district officials, including deputy commissioner Dr Preeti Yadav and SP Vaibhav Chaudhary, on Thursday.
A two-minute silence was observed in the memory of the deceased.
Dr Singh announced strict directives to curb reckless driving, particularly by tippers and school buses.
'All tippers must adhere to a maximum speed limit of 60 km/h and speed governors must be installed. Their movement during daytime will be completely barred,' he said, adding that school buses must fully comply with the Safe School Vehicle Policy.
He also ordered stringent fitness checks, dope tests and eye exams for all drivers of tippers, trucks and school buses. 'There will be a zero tolerance towards violations, and any government official found negligent will face strict action,' he stated.
The government's swift response, however, has done little to quell public's anger over repeated accidents involving heavy vehicles. Mourning the devastating loss of young lives, Samana observed a complete bandh on Thursday, demanding accountability and lasting road safety reforms.

In a related incident, a Kannada news portal published a baseless report titled 'Sword attack resurfaces in Dakshina Kannada district; two innocent Muslims attacked while returning home from work in Sajipa.' The article, which was found to be false, was circulated through a Kannada website. A case was registered against the media outlet with court permission, under Section 240 of the BNS. Another case was registered in connection with an unlawful assembly of 50 to 75 people near the Deraje bus stand. The crowd, allegedly mobilised in response to the fake 'sword attack' report, obstructed traffic in the area. Police booked the individuals involved under Sections 240, 285, 189(2), 191(2), and 190 of the BNS. Police have issued a stern warning against spreading false information and disturbing public order through social media and other platforms. The fake messages reportedly circulated after Mohammad Mukbul, 34, filed a complaint. He said that on Friday night, he was riding pillion on a scooter with a relative. While travelling from Boliyar towards Melkar, the two reached near the Deraje bus stop and noticed two helmeted individuals sitting on a parked scooter facing Boliyar. One of the individuals reportedly ran towards them. Mukbul clarified that he did not see any sword or weapon. Suspecting danger, he told his relative to speed away. The incident was later misrepresented online, leading to the spread of fake news.

16 return from Iran to warm welcome

Bengaluru: A warm welcome was accorded to 16 individuals who returned safely to Bengaluru from Iran on Saturday at the Kempegowda International Airport. Independent MLA Puttaswamy Gowda, representing the Gauribidanur Assembly seat and the family members of the repatriated individuals greeted them warmly. MLA Gowda handed over the Indian Tricolour to the returnees and raised slogans of 'Bharat Mata ki Jai' along with them. Speaking to the media, he stated that most of the returnees were residents of Alipura village in Chikkaballapura district. 'There are still about 80 people from Alipura village stranded in Iran. I have spoken to the Chief Minister and Union Ministers about the matter, and arrangements will be made to bring them back soon in a day or two,' he said. The returnees had first arrived in Delhi and were subsequently brought to Bengaluru. They explained that their initial intention was to visit Iran and explore business opportunities. However, once the bombing began, they feared they might never be able to return to India. They expressed their gratitude to the officers of the Indian Embassy, as well as to the state and Union governments, for the assistance provided. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had said recently that students from the state currently stuck in conflict-ridden Israel and Iran are being well taken care of by authorities there, and will be brought back soon.
