Samana crash: Driver of truck that killed 5 school kids arrested
Police on Thursday arrested the driver of a tipper truck that rammed into a Toyota Innova, killing six occupants of the car — the driver and five schoolchildren — on the Patiala-Samana road.
The driver, Bhupinder Singh, along with the truck's owners, Randhir Singh and Davinder Singh, were booked under Section 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The truck owners are, however, yet to be taken into custody.
Police sources shared that the fitness certificate, pollution certificate and insurance of the truck had expired. Besides, the truck owners had not paid any road tax.
Five schoolchildren and the driver of their car, which ferried them daily to school, were killed when the tipper had collided with the vehicle head-on.
A pall of grief descended on Samana city as the five children were cremated at the local cremation ground. Locals raised slogans against the state government, condemning its failure to regulate speeding by trucks.
Patiala MP Dr Dharmavira Gandhi, who attended the cremation, expressed deep condolences to the grieving families. Calling the loss 'unbearable', he assured to take up the matter with Union transport minister Nitin Gadkari and demand the widening of the Patiala-Samana Road to prevent such accidents in future.
Govt enforces measures for road safety
Punjab health minister and Patiala Rural MLA Dr Balbir Singh convened an emergency meeting with senior district officials, including deputy commissioner Dr Preeti Yadav and SP Vaibhav Chaudhary, on Thursday.
A two-minute silence was observed in the memory of the deceased.
Dr Singh announced strict directives to curb reckless driving, particularly by tippers and school buses.
'All tippers must adhere to a maximum speed limit of 60 km/h and speed governors must be installed. Their movement during daytime will be completely barred,' he said, adding that school buses must fully comply with the Safe School Vehicle Policy.
He also ordered stringent fitness checks, dope tests and eye exams for all drivers of tippers, trucks and school buses. 'There will be a zero tolerance towards violations, and any government official found negligent will face strict action,' he stated.
The government's swift response, however, has done little to quell public's anger over repeated accidents involving heavy vehicles. Mourning the devastating loss of young lives, Samana observed a complete bandh on Thursday, demanding accountability and lasting road safety reforms.

Fake ‘sword attack' triggers panic in Mangaluru; social media user, news portal booked for spreading false information; police warn of strict action
MANGALURU: The Dakshina Kannada district police have registered multiple cases after false messages and a misleading news report about an alleged 'sword attack' were circulated on social media and a website, creating panic among the public. SP Dr Arun K stated that a fake message was shared in a WhatsApp group named Muslim Yuva Balaga by a person identified as Ziyad Ummi. The message falsely claimed that 'an attempt to assault two youths occurred in the middle of Sajipa Deraje Road, leading to public outrage at the scene.' Police said the message was intended to incite fear and disturb public peace. A case was registered at Bantwal Rural Police Station under Section 240 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). In a related incident, a Kannada news portal published a baseless report titled 'Sword attack resurfaces in Dakshina Kannada district; two innocent Muslims attacked while returning home from work in Sajipa.' The article, which was found to be false, was circulated through a Kannada website. A case was registered against the media outlet with court permission, under Section 240 of the BNS. Similarly, false information related to the same incident was posted on a Facebook account named Muhammad Naushad. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Co-live Spaces Starting from 42L+ | Whitefield Sumadhura Learn More Undo A case was also filed against this account under Section 240 of the BNS, after obtaining court approval. Another case was registered in connection with an unlawful assembly of 50 to 75 people near the Deraje bus stand. The crowd, allegedly mobilised in response to the fake 'sword attack' report, obstructed traffic in the area. Police booked the individuals involved under Sections 240, 285, 189(2), 191(2), and 190 of the BNS. Police have issued a stern warning against spreading false information and disturbing public order through social media and other platforms. The fake messages reportedly circulated after Mohammad Mukbul, 34, filed a complaint. He said that on Friday night, he was riding pillion on a scooter with a relative. While travelling from Boliyar towards Melkar, the two reached near the Deraje bus stop and noticed two helmeted individuals sitting on a parked scooter facing Boliyar. One of the individuals reportedly ran towards them. Mukbul clarified that he did not see any sword or weapon. Suspecting danger, he told his relative to speed away. The incident was later misrepresented online, leading to the spread of fake news.

'Go, stitch slippers' remark: IndiGo denies allegations by trainee pilot; pledges full cooperation with police
NEW DELHI: IndiGo Airlines on Monday strongly denied allegations of workplace casteism made by a 35-year-old trainee pilot who filed an FIR against three senior officials for caste-based harassment at the company's corporate office. The pilot accused Tapas Dey, Manish Sahani, and Captain Rahul Patil of verbal abuse and discriminatory behavior during a meeting on April 28 at their headquarters in Emaar Capital Tower 2. "IndiGo upholds a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of discrimination, harassment, or bias and remains firmly committed to being an inclusive and respectful workplace. IndiGo strongly refutes these baseless claims and stands by its values of fairness, integrity, and accountability and will extend its support to the law enforcement agencies as required," stated an IndiGo spokesperson. The case was initially filed as a zero FIR in Bengaluru before being transferred to DLF-1 police station in Gurgaon. The charges fall under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and BNS. The trainee pilot from Bengaluru alleged that the harassment began when Dey demanded he leave his phone and bag outside in a demeaning manner. During the 30-minute meeting, the officials allegedly made casteist remarks, including statements like "you are not fit to fly an aircraft, go back and stitch slippers" and "you don't even have the worth to be a watchman here." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo The complainant claimed the harassment persisted for days, allegedly designed to force his resignation. The alleged mistreatment extended beyond verbal abuse to include professional victimization through unjustified salary deductions, forced retraining sessions, revocation of travel privileges, and unwarranted warning letters. "The statements they made were not only humiliating but clearly aimed at degrading my identity and status as a Scheduled Caste person," the complaint stated. The pilot claimed that despite escalating the matter to higher officials and the company's ethics committee, no action was taken, leading him to approach the SC/ST cell for legal intervention. The FIR was registered under sections 3(1)(r) and 3(1)(s) of the SC/ST Act, which address intentional insults or intimidation meant to humiliate a Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe member in public view. Additional charges include sections 351(2) for criminal intimidation, 352 for intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace, and 3(5) for common intention of BNS. Assistant Sub-Inspector Dalwinder Singh stated they have begun collecting evidence and will soon record statements from all involved parties. The airline has committed to cooperating with law enforcement authorities regarding this matter, though they did not respond to requests for comment specifically about the FIR.
