Sabah cuts power outage duration by half, eyes sub-100 minute annual target by 2030

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah's average electricity interruption duration has more than halved over the past decade, and Sabah Electricity is now aiming to reduce it even further — to under 100 minutes annually by 2030.
This goal is part of Sabah Electricity's strategic plan to enhance power reliability through the expansion of Distribution Automation systems, which have been progressively installed statewide since 2018.
Chief Operating Officer Mohd Yusmanizam Mohd Yusof said the state's System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI) was around 500 minutes in 2014, but had dropped to 207 minutes by 2024.
'With continued investments in automation, grid upgrades, and cable insulation, we're confident we can bring SAIDI to below 100 minutes by 2030,' he said when met during a visit to one of the Distribution Automation system sites in Kundasang.
The system allows Sabah Electricity's control centre in Kota Kinabalu to remotely detect faults, isolate damaged segments, and restore supply to unaffected areas — without having to dispatch technicians to the scene.
Without the system, teams would need to travel physically to the site, often delayed by traffic or weather, resulting in longer power restoration times.
In the Ranau district — an interior highland area located about 110km east of Kota Kinabalu — the system has been operational since last year. The SAIDI there dropped from 230 minutes in the January-April period of 2024 to just 165 minutes this year, marking a nearly 30% reduction.
Kundasang, previously one of the worst-hit areas with up to 800 minutes of disruptions annually per customer, has also seen significant improvement.
So far, Sabah Electricity has installed Distribution Automation systems at 681 locations across Sabah and Labuan, including rural and interior areas such as Beluran, Tulupit and Kundasang. It aims to increase this to 1,250 locations by 2030.
Yusmanizam said the utility provider's long-term transformation strategy includes replacing bare overhead lines with insulated cables, alongside adopting new digital infrastructure.
'With these combined efforts, we hope to match the reliability levels of Peninsular Malaysia, where the SAIDI currently stands at about 50 minutes,' he added.

This is the future Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) is building today through its nationwide grid modernisation. At the heart of this transformation is the smart meter — a small device making a big difference. These smart meters record your energy use every 30 minutes and send the data to TNB daily. That means no more waiting for estimated bills or worrying about sudden spikes in cost. With a few taps on the myTNB app, you can now track your energy use, set budgets, and even see how your habits are helping (or hurting) the planet. TNB plans to install a minimum of 10.3 million smart meters throughout Peninsular Malaysia by 2030 to empower every household to make smarter, greener choices and take control of their bills. SMART ELECTRICITY GRIDS While households are seeing the benefits of smart meters, TNB is also upgrading what happens behind the scenes, through the implementation of the Distribution Automation (DA) Project. This initiative brings numerous benefits to both customers and field operations. On the customer side, one of the most important benefits is uninterrupted electricity supply, as users now enjoy a more stable power experience with minimal major disruptions. This significantly improves the overall customer experience, as the system helps improve power quality, optimise asset utilisation, and reduce outage durations. All of this is made possible as the system allows for rapid fault detection and faster decision-making, which significantly reduces restoration times during outages. At the operational level, TNB's control centres now utilise smart grid technologies that enable real-time monitoring and control of network assets. By using sensors and Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs), control centres receive automatic alarms and event notifications, allowing for more efficient responses. TNB operators can now remotely control critical components such as switches, circuit breakers, and reclosers — bringing benefits such as eliminating the need for manual intervention on-site and enhancing safety for on-ground personnel. This smarter grid doesn't just improve reliability; it also helps TNB prepare for a future powered by clean energy. TNB is also leveraging advanced analytics to predict equipment failures, analyse weather impact, and optimise overall grid performance. Thanks to this DA Project, nearly 33,000 substations have already been upgraded, benefiting millions of customers with more efficient power delivery. By 2030, 84 per cent of substations across Peninsular Malaysia will be part of this smart grid revolution. The project involves installing various equipment such as Remote Terminal Units (RTU), Field Terminal Units (FTU), Motorized Switchgear and other equipment at all types of substations (PMU – Main Intake Substation, PPU - Primary Distribution Substation, SSU - Switching Station and PE - Substation) at various voltage levels (132kV, 33kV and 11kV). As of now, the project has successfully installed and commissioned 4,565 substations, covering 3.6 million customers, bringing the total DA installation since 2014 to 32,905 distribution substations across Peninsular Malaysia. SUSTAINABLE ENERGY PRODUCTION TNB is also stepping up efforts to reduce Malaysia's carbon footprint. It is accelerating the integration of renewable energy (RE) into the grid, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and strengthening Malaysia's clean energy agenda. It's integrating more renewable energy, like solar and hydro, into the grid and preparing for a future where homes can generate, store, and even sell back electricity. One example is the Elmina Ilham Residence in Shah Alam. As Malaysia's first interconnected smart green community neighbourhood, 513 homes have been fitted with rooftop solar panels. Under TNB's Smart Community Infrastructure Programme, the homes have been equipped with 2.25kW solar panels through the Net Energy Metering (NEM) scheme, while the city will be under a rooftop leasing model using Community Renewable Energy Aggregation Mechanism (CREAM) - generating and offtaking green electricity within the community. Residents there can share clean energy within their own community, reducing both costs and emissions. To support this growing solar adoption, TNB is upgrading its systems to allow two-way energy flow, meaning energy can go from the grid to the consumer and vice versa. This shift is crucial in creating a cleaner, more flexible power system that supports TNB's Energy Transition Plan to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, in line with the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR). Another key initiative supporting this national goal is the push for low-carbon mobility, and TNB plays a central role in driving this transformation. As the country's leading electricity provider, TNB is actively building a comprehensive EV charging ecosystem. Through its dedicated brand, TNB Electron, the company is deploying fast and accessible EV chargers across highways and urban areas, enabling both long-distance travel and daily convenience. In addition to installing its own chargers, TNB also supports Charge Point Operators (CPOs) to expand the national network, accelerating the adoption of cleaner transport options in line with Malaysia's Net Zero 2050 vision. POWERING ASEAN TOGETHER TNB's efforts tie directly into the Asean Power Grid — a bold regional initiative connecting power networks across Southeast Asia. Countries can share excess energy, balance their grids, and tap into each other's renewable sources. With its advanced smart grid and growing renewable capacity, Malaysia is well-positioned to be a key player in this cross-border energy exchange. Already, power-sharing agreements are in the works, turning Malaysia into a regional hub for clean and reliable electricity. These initiatives reflect TNB's commitment to modernising the energy landscape through innovation, sustainability, and community-led solutions, paving the way for a cleaner, more resilient future for all Malaysians.

The community, made up of some 200 households, currently receives electricity for 18 hours a day — an upgrade from the previous 12-hour schedule — following the installation of a new, more efficient diesel generator. Mohd Yusmanizam Mohd Yusof said the move was part of the utility's commitment to ensure equitable access to electricity for all, including rural and island communities. 'We've sent a new, more efficient generator to Pulau Keniogan to ensure a more dependable power supply,' he said. 'We are working towards 24-hour electricity. Our goal is to make sure that every Sabahan gets the best service and electricity supply possible.' Pulau Keniogan, located off the coast of Sandakan and accessible only by boat, is home to a Bajau-majority fishing community that has long depended on candlelight, kerosene lamps and small private generators to get through the night. Local development officer (UPPM) Lokman Madlis said the longer electricity hours had already improved daily life for many residents. 'Alhamdulillah, it now feels like we're not so isolated anymore,' he said. 'People here have freezers, some even have air-conditioning and Astro. With longer electricity hours, we can store our catch properly and send it to the mainland for sale the next day. This really helps our income, especially for those who depend entirely on fishing.' Community representative Kamarzaman Marof echoed similar sentiments, saying full-day electricity is not just a convenience but a necessity. 'We really need 24-hour supply because ice is crucial for the fishermen,' he said. 'Without it, it's hard to keep our catch fresh. Some of us go out to sea in the morning and only return late in the day. If the ice melts or there's not enough, the fish will spoil and we lose money.' He pointed out that many elderly villagers rely on fans or cooling appliances due to the heat, adding that 24-hour power would improve their comfort and health. Sabah Electricity is currently working with the Rural and Regional Development Ministry (KKDW) to complete a solar hybrid project on the island. PARIS, June 15 — Predictions of imminent AI-driven mass unemployment are likely overblown, but employers will seek workers with different skills as the technology matures, a top executive at global recruiter ManpowerGroup told AFP at Paris's Vivatech trade fair. The world's third-largest staffing firm by revenue ran a startup contest at Vivatech in which one of the contenders was building systems to hire out customisable autonomous AI 'agents', rather than humans. Their service was reminiscent of a warning last month from Dario Amodei, head of American AI giant Anthropic, that the technology could wipe out half of entry-level white-collar jobs within one to five years. For ManpowerGroup, AI agents are 'certainly not going to become our core business any time soon,' the company's Chief Innovation Officer Tomas Chamorro-Premuzic said. 'If history shows us one thing, it's most of these forecasts are wrong.' An International Labour Organisation (ILO) report published in May found that around 'one in four workers across the world are in an occupation with some degree of exposure' to generative AI models' capabilities. 'Few jobs are currently at high risk of full automation,' the ILO added. But the UN body also highlighted 'rapid expansion of AI capabilities since our previous study' in 2023, including the emergence of 'agentic' models more able to act autonomously or semi-autonomously and use software like web browsers and email. 'Soft skills' Chamorro-Premuzic predicted that the introduction of efficiency-enhancing AI tools would put pressure on workers, managers and firms to make the most of the time they will save. 'If what happens is that AI helps knowledge workers save 30, 40, maybe 50 per cent of their time, but that time is then wasted on social media, that's not an increase in net output,' he said. Adoption of AI could give workers 'more time to do creative work' — or impose 'greater standardisation of their roles and reduced autonomy,' the ILO said. There's general agreement that interpersonal skills and an entrepreneurial attitude will become more important for knowledge workers as their daily tasks shift towards corralling AIs. Employers identified ethical judgement, customer service, team management and strategic thinking as top skills AI could not replace in a ManpowerGroup survey of over 40,000 employers across 42 countries published this week. Nevertheless, training that adopts those new priorities has not increased in step with AI adoption, Chamorro-Premuzic lamented. 'For every dollar you invest in technology, you need to invest eight or nine on HR, culture transformation, change management,' he said. He argued that such gaps suggest companies are still chasing automation, rather than the often-stated aim of augmenting human workers' capabilities with AI. AI hiring AI? One of the areas where AI is transforming the world of work most rapidly is ManpowerGroup's core business of recruitment. But here candidates are adopting the tools just as quickly as recruiters and companies, disrupting the old way of doing things from the bottom up. 'Candidates are able to send 500 perfect applications in one day, they are able to send their bots to interview, they are even able to game elements of the assessments,' Chamorro-Premuzic said. That extreme picture was not borne out in a survey of over 1,000 job seekers released this week by recruitment platform TestGorilla, which found just 17 per cent of applicants admitting to cheating on tests, and only some of those to using AI. Jobseekers' use of consumer AI tools meets recruiters doing the same. The same TestGorilla survey found almost two-thirds of the more-than-1,000 hiring decision-makers polled used AI to generate job descriptions and screen applications. But a far smaller share are already using the technology to actually interview candidates. Where employers today are focused on candidates' skills over credentials, Chamorro-Premuzic predicted that 'the next evolution is to focus on potential, not even skills even if I know the skills you bring to the table today, they might be obsolete in six months.' 'I'm better off knowing that you're hard-working, that you are curious, that you have good people skills, that you're not a jerk — and that, AI can help you evaluate,' he believes. — AFP
