Football club bids to expand its academy site

Yahoo26-05-2025

A professional football club has applied for permission to expand its academy.
Mansfield Town opened the Radford & Hymas training facility in Woburn Lane, Pleasley, in 2016, and in 2023 it bought more land nearby from Nottinghamshire County Council to expand onto.
Now the Stags have bid to build an indoor training pitch and outdoor pitch with lighting, a sports hall and gym building, and two new car parks.
In documents sent to planning authority Mansfield District Council, the club said the expansion would enable it to welcome new youngsters and tackle "problematic" car parking.
At the time the club purchased the 5.5 acre (22,257sq m) site for an undisclosed sum, it said more than 300 children used the facility each week and it supported more than 70 students on apprenticeships and further education at West Notts College and Nottingham Trent University.
But it said this had led to "problematic" parking at evenings and weekends.
In the planning application, HMS Town Planning and Design said the extra facilities would allow the League One club to grow, support its teams at all levels, and promote healthier lifestyles in the area "as well as make optimal use of an existing facility that is operating below its potential".
Mansfield planners are consulting on the plans until 14 June, with a decision on the application expected by mid-August.

PGA Tour Reacts to Tommy Fleetwood's Performance at Travelers Championship

PGA Tour Reacts to Tommy Fleetwood's Performance at Travelers Championship originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Travelers Championship is heating up in Connecticut, and England's Tommy Fleetwood is leading the charge. After a sensational third-round 63, Fleetwood heads into Sunday with a three-shot lead at 16-under-par. The 34-year-old has never won a PGA Tour title, but his flawless round on Saturday, including an eagle on the 13th and a birdie on the 15th, has placed him on the brink of history. Advertisement The PGA Tour didn't hold back in celebrating his performance, spotlighting his bogey-free round and red-hot form. They described him as the "solo leader" and praised his quest for that long-awaited first PGA Tour win with a simple yet powerful message: 'Tommy Fleetwood hit EVERY fairway en route to a 3-shot lead.' Tommy Fleetwood reacts to his birdie on the 15th hole during the third round of the Travelers Championship golf Streicher-Imagn Images Fleetwood has 41 top-10 finishes without a victory, more than any other active player. But he seems to be embracing the moment. 'I would love to win on the PGA Tour,' he admitted per Outlook. 'It's just an amazing opportunity for me to go out and enjoy it, and hopefully it's our time.' Close behind him are Russell Henley and Keegan Bradley, both sitting at 13-under. Henley shot an electrifying 61, while Bradley, a fan favorite and former Travelers champ, carded a 63. Meanwhile, world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, who started Saturday tied with Fleetwood and Justin Thomas, stumbled early with a rare triple bogey on the first hole, eventually shooting a 72. He now trails by nine shots, tied for eighth. Advertisement After missing the cut at the U.S. Open last week, Fleetwood's bounce-back this week has been impressive. With one round left, all eyes are on Fleetwood. If he holds on, it would mark a long-awaited and emotional first PGA Tour victory. Manchester United explore Mount sale with Premier League rival linked

Manchester United have explored the potential sale of Mason Mount this summer with the club trying to 'establish whether there is a market' for the midfielder. Mount has endured an injury-hit time at Manchester United since arriving from Chelsea in a £55m deal in 2023. A succession of fitness issues and the presence of Bruno Fernandes has prevented Mount from making the expected impact at Old Trafford. He made just eight starts in the Premier League last season and has not been capped by England since the 2022 World Cup. Advertisement The club's former scout, Mick Brown, has revealed that the Red Devils have explored the sale of Mount this summer. Speaking to the Inside Track podcast, he said United are open to letting Mount move on this summer amid interest from Aston Villa. 'United have tried to establish whether there is a market for Mason Mount,' he said. 'Aston Villa have been spoken about and I think they could make a move. 'People remember Mason Mount at his best, that's what Villa want to help him get back to and it looks like he's back to full fitness now. 'Villa want to strengthen because they've lost (Marcus) Rashford and (Marco) Asensio, so Mount is on their list. Unai Emery is a fan of his and feels he could help him to rediscover his Chelsea form. Advertisement 'It would be an excellent move for Mount as well, because Villa are a top club, they've got top facilities and they'll be playing in Europe.' Jarell Quansah's Bayer Leverkusen medical scheduled for after U21 Euros

Kicker confirms that Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes travelled to the UEFA U21 European Championship in Slovakia to complete an important piece of business. Namely, the signing of Liverpool centre-back and England U21 international Jarell Quansah. Rolfes was at the Anton-Malatinsky-Stadion in Trnava on Saturday evening to seal the deal. A Bundesliga move is imminent. Rolfes watched the England U21s defeat the Spanish U21s in their quarterfinal fixture. A Tiktok video showed him enjoying a snack in the stadium concourse. It stands to reason that Rolfes wasn't in Slovakia to sample culinary fare or even kill a little time before watching the German U21s in their Sunday quarterfinal clash against Italy. Advertisement Rolfes remained on the hunt for a very special autograph. Quansah's record signing has obviously not corresponded to the previously reported upon time due to the progression of the England U21s in the tournament. England's quarterfinal win leaves Quansah committed to at least one more tournament match on Wednesday. England face Holland in the semi-finals. Should Lee Carsley's Juniors prevail, they will contest the tournament Final on Saturday. Kicker's reliable Leverkusen correspondent Stephan van Nocks reports that a B04 medical will be the next top item on Quansah's agenda. GGFN | Peter Weis
