Southwest Airlines irks customers by killing another popular policy

Independent15-04-2025

Southwest Airlines is putting an expiration date on passengers ' flight credits — and travelers are not happy.
Last month, the airline announced a slew of changes it will be making this year, which will go into effect on May 28. One major change is that flight credits are being given an expiration date.
The airline previously had a 'travel credits don't expire' policy.
As noted by Southwest, a 'flight credit is a credit from either a canceled flight or a downgrade in fare that can be used to buy a future flight.'
However, with Southwest's new policy, any flight credits issued when you buy a ticket on or after May 28, will expire in one year from the 'date of ticketing.'
In some cases, credits could expire within less than a year from the date you bought your plane ticket. All passengers' flight credits will have a specified expiration date.
However, if you've earned any flight credits on May 27 or earlier, they will not expire.
On social media, many Southwest customers have expressed their anger about the policy change.
'So not only Southwest will have added checked bag fees, no more low fares, seat selection, but now the travel credits have an expiration date. What incentive is there to still fly with them over other airlines now?' one wrote on X, referencing the company's simultaneous decision to end its free checked bag policy.
'Why would I fly Southwest when they follow the same as other airlines,' another tweeted. 'People go where the perks/ amenities rise above, that also have the best price & comfortable seating when picking. Southwest is not the 1st choice anymore.'
Other travelers declared that they wouldn't be using the airline anymore.
'They were my go-to airline. Placing customers first made them the obvious prime choice. Now it seems customers are last…digging for every penny they can scrape out of them,' one tweeted.
Another agreed: 'No more southwest for me. I will be changing my loyalty credit card too.'
Last month, Southwest also announced that starting May 28, customers can't check their first and second bags for free unless they are part of Southwest's A-List loyalty program. Other select customers, A-List members and Rapid Rewards Credit Card will also receive one free checked bag. Or, you can check your bag for free if you are traveling on a business fare.
'We have tremendous opportunity to meet current and future Customer needs, attract new Customer segments we don't compete for today, and return to the levels of profitability that both we and our Shareholders expect,' Bob Jordan, the President, Chief Executive Officer, & Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors at Southwest Airlines, said in a press release at the time.
However, Southwest confirmed that those who cannot find a place for their carry-on bag on busy flights would not be charged, even if it has to be checked.
'There will be times when we solicit at the gate for a soon-to-depart full flight bags to check, and of course, there would not be a charge,' the company said in a statement to The Independent. 'If someone is on the aircraft and cannot find a place for their bag, of course, there would not be a charge. The policies and protocols will be spelled out (along with the specific charges) as we approach adding this into our operation.'
Southwest was known for offering two free checked bags to all passengers. Each bag could be 62 inches in size and up to 50 pounds, according to the company's policy. If customers had a third bag to check, they would be charged an additional $150. If one of their two checked bags is overweight, they will also be charged an additional $150.

Grant for developer of Glasgow's Egyptian Halls approved

The funding — which will be dependent on the completion of a compulsory purchase — is expected to go towards 'bricks and mortar' construction work, rather than feasibility studies. Glasgow City Council is investigating the possibility of buying the rundown Alexander 'Greek' Thomson-designed halls on Union Street, where the upper floors have been lying empty for decades. If a compulsory purchase order (CPO) goes ahead, the property could then be transferred to a developer to bring it back into use. A development brief is set to be published this month, which will be made available to interested parties. They will have 12 weeks to submit proposals. READ MORE: Grant on offer for potential developers of Glasgow's Egyptian Halls It was previously revealed a consortium, including the publisher of the List magazine, with plans for a food market and hotel are keen to take on the halls. The building is currently owned by two companies — Union Street Developments and Union Street Properties — both run by Dundee businessman Derek Souter and his partners. They will also be invited to submit proposals to the council — and are able to sell the property voluntarily at any point. Councillors backed the potential grant at a meeting of the city administration committee on Thursday. Cllr Ruairi Kelly, SNP, the council's convener for built heritage, said the aim of the grant is to 'instigate interest and ensure we have got credible bids coming forward'. It is also to 'assure any organisation that we will be an active partner in bringing the Egyptian Halls back to purposeful use', he added, and to 'signify our dedication to supporting whichever organisation is successful through that procurement process'. The cash would be released at an 'appropriate point', with milestones to be set during any renovation project. Cllr Kelly said it is intended to fund 'bricks and mortar construction work, rather than feasibility studies or planning or anything like that'. READ MORE: 'Glasgow deserves better': Heritage groups slam approval of O2 ABC site plans He added there was 'no doubt' the developers would require funding from other sources, whether 'investors, heritage organisations, or wherever else the prospective bidder says they are going to raise the funding from'. Cllr Kelly's paper came after councillors supported a recommendation to investigate the use of CPO powers in February. Officials will evaluate proposals for the halls against a criteria which will include how they intend to retain and use the building, previous experience, timeframe and deliverability and funding. A preferred proposal could then be selected, with the council promoting a CPO to buy the building for the chosen party. The plan would be for the council to enter a 'back to back agreement' with a developer. It would include obligations to have planning permission, show reasonable attempts to voluntarily buy the property and an undertaking to 'meet all of the council's costs including compensation payable as a consequence of the CPO'. Cllr Kelly previously said CPOs can be 'lengthy and complex' but it would be 'the first major step towards the repair and reuse of this beautiful building'.

Huge brewer is introducing Friday beers discount and free pint loyalty scheme at more than 120 pubs

A MAJOR pub group is rolling out Friday evening drinks discounts and a free pint loyalty scheme in a fresh bid to win back customers. Butcombe, which runs more than 120 pubs across the UK including in the South West, is offering a 20 per cent discount on all drinks bought on Friday evenings – traditionally the busiest time of the week for locals. 2 The group is also giving away a free pint to customers for every five pints of Butcombe beer they purchase, as part of an upgraded loyalty programme aimed at boosting pub visits. Jonathan Lawson, chief executive of Butcombe, told the Financial Times that getting customers to return more frequently had become 'kind of the holy grail' for the industry. He said the biggest worry for pub operators right now is the drop in how often customers are visiting. With rising living costs, more people are choosing to drink at home, or cut down altogether. The Friday night drinks deal and beer club perks are Butcombe's answer to that trend. The loyalty scheme appears to be working – Butcombe said sales from loyalty card users made up 22 per cent of its total business in the first three months of this year. And Butcombe isn't alone. Greene King, which owns more than 2,700 pubs across the UK, is preparing to launch its first-ever app-based loyalty scheme. According to insiders, customers could soon earn discounts on everything from pints to pub grub and even overnight stays. The pub chain, which also runs the Chef & Brewer and Hungry Horse brands, recently made headlines by giving away 100,000 free pints during April. Customers just had to walk up to the bar and say, 'It's raining, can I have a free pint?' Other chains are following suit. Mitchells & Butlers – behind the likes of All Bar One and Harvester – is trialling a points system, while Fuller's is testing out rewards like two-for-one meals and free glasses of wine at 30 of its pubs. Industry experts say these kinds of offers are now becoming the norm. Saxon Moseley, hospitality lead at consulting firm RSM, said: 'Loyalty schemes are quickly becoming table stakes. "Pubs that don't offer one risk missing out.' It's all part of a wider effort to modernise how pubs attract and keep customers. Stonegate, the UK's biggest pub group with over 4,500 sites, spent £2 million developing its own loyalty app, which even includes a game where users can 'spin to win' a free pint. Chief executive David McDowall said loyalty schemes were now the industry's 'most important marketing tool'. He added: 'Pubs have been a little behind the rest of the hospitality industry. We are playing catch-up.' Meanwhile, more traditional players like Wetherspoons are staying out of the loyalty game – for now. Known for already offering some of the lowest prices on the high street, the chain says it has no plans to launch a points or rewards system. But with younger drinkers becoming more health-conscious and older customers tightening their wallets, loyalty offers could be what keeps some punters heading to the pub. NHS guidelines on drinking alcohol According to the NHS, regularly drinking more than 14 units of alcohol a week risks damaging your health. To keep health risks from alcohol to a low level if you drink most weeks: men and women are advised not to drink more than 14 units a week on a regular basis spread your drinking over 3 or more days if you regularly drink as much as 14 units a week if you want to cut down, try to have several drink-free days each week If you're pregnant or think you could become pregnant, the safest approach is not to drink alcohol at all to keep risks to your baby to a minimum.
