Who Is Kusal Mendis? GT's Replacement For Buttler Who Dropped Rohit Sharma, SKY
Last Updated:
Kusal Mendis had a debut to forget in the IPL as he dropped two big chances to dismiss Rohit Sharma early into his innings.
It was definitely not a debut to remember for the Sri Lankan international, Kusal Mendis, who was asked to replace the in-form English keeper, Jos Buttler, for the playoff stages of the Indian Premier League 2025 edition. In the first eliminator clash against the Gujarat Titans at the Mullanpur Stadium in Mohali, Mendis made two big mistakes, which could prove to be costly for the franchise.
Mendis was roped in as Jos Buttler's replacement after the latter had to leave due to England's upcoming white-ball series against the West Indies at home. In turn, the Sri Lankan was roped in for Rs 75 Lakh.
He had a debut to forget in the IPL as he dropped two big chances to dismiss Rohit Sharma early into his innings. These drops proved to be costly as an Indian veteran went on to score 81 runs off 50 deliveries to push Mumbai Indians over the 200-run mark.
Rohit was dropped twice during the powerplay, allowing the veteran to capitalize on the opposition's fielding errors. First, Gerald Coetzee dropped him in the deep, and then Kusal Mendis, on his GT debut, mishandled a straightforward catch behind the stumps off Mohammed Siraj. It was Bairstow (47 off 22) who provided the Mumbai Indians with momentum in the powerplay through some superb hitting.
The out-of-favor England batter, who joined the Mumbai Indians shortly after scoring consecutive fifties in county cricket for Yorkshire, took his chances early and was well rewarded. He targeted the Titans' best pacer of the season, Prasidh Krishna, smashing him for 26 runs in the fourth over, including three sixes. The first six was a pull shot that cleared the square leg fence effortlessly, followed by a clean hit down the ground.
Rohit also joined the action when spinner Sai Kishore was introduced during the powerplay. The former MI captain executed the sweep shot perfectly, collecting two fours and a massive six, bringing his team to 79 for no loss in six overs, their best powerplay of the season.
The top order's confidence rubbed off on Tilak Varma (25 off 11), who has had an off-season by his standards. He hit three sixes in quick succession before falling to Siraj.
Skipper Hardik Pandya targeted Coetzee for a couple of sixes in the 20th over, pushing the total past
Considering Mumbai Indians' formidable bowling unit, the Titans have a challenging task ahead.
For the third consecutive innings, the opposition team managed to score more than 225 runs against the Titans.

Chhattisgarh CM Provides Rs 1.7 Lakh Aid To Athlete For Softball Championship In China
Last Updated: Chhattisgarh CM's call to 17-year-old Shalu Dahariya, a national-level softball player, ensured her expenses for the Asia Youth Softball Championship in China were covered In a moment that will forever be etched in the memory of 17-year-old Shalu Dahariya, a video call from Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai turned what seemed like an insurmountable hurdle into a milestone of hope. Shalu, a national-level softball player from Janjgir-Champa district, has earned a coveted spot in the Indian team for the Asia Youth Softball Championship, slated to be held in Xi'an, China from July 14 to 20. But while her talent opened international doors, it was a timely intervention from the highest level of government that ensured she could walk through them. The daughter of a private security guard and a beauty parlour worker, Shalu's journey has been one of resilience and quiet determination. Starting softball in Class 8, she has already represented Chhattisgarh in national championships a dozen times, clinching a gold medal along the way. Yet, when the opportunity to represent India arrived, the cost – Rs 1.70 lakh for international travel and preparation – stood like a wall in her path. That wall crumbled when her story reached the ears of the Chief Minister. In a surprise gesture, CM Sai reached out to Shalu directly via video call. His message was both heartfelt and firm. 'Daughter, move forward fearlessly. We are all with you. Chhattisgarh is proud of you," the CM said. What followed was more than just words of encouragement; it was action. Acting swiftly on the Chief Minister's instructions, Janjgir-Champa Collector Janmejay Mahobe personally handed over a cheque of Rs 1.70 lakh to Shalu, covering all her expenses for the international trip. Shalu's story is now echoing across Chhattisgarh, inspiring countless young girls who dare to dream big in the face of financial constraints. It serves as a powerful reminder that when governments move beyond red tape and respond with empathy and urgency, they don't just fund ambitions; they help rewrite destinies. WATCH: Rishabh Pant talks to himself after nearly getting dismissed; DK translates for Atherton and Nasser
Rishabh Pant's risky shots sparked debate on Day 4 of the 1st Test against England at Headingley. A stump-mic moment revealed his self talk, which Dinesh Karthik translated for English audience. read more Dinesh Karthik translated what Rishabh Pant said to himself after playing those shots. Image: SkySports Rishabh Pant was back doing what he does best, playing a high-risk game. As India tried to build a strong second-innings lead against England on Day 4 of the first Test match , Pant's approach left the commentators and even himself a little confused. At the time, Pant was batting alongside KL Rahul, who was calm and solid at one end. Rahul had played over 150 balls and was steadily moving towards a well-earned hundred. But at the other end, Pant was playing shots that didn't quite match the situation. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD India had already lost a crucial wicket in the form of captain Shubman Gill early in the day. When vice-captain Rishabh Pant came out, a more measured and composed knock was expected of him. However, he was walking a thin rope that separated genius from madness. DK translates Pant's self talk A small moment during the live coverage gave everyone an interesting look into Pant's mindset. Michael Atherton, Dinesh Karthik, and Nasser Hussain were in the commentary box when a stump-mic clip was played. It captured Pant talking some sense to himself after one of his risky shots. Michael Atherton: Let's have a listen (Pant's stump-mic video plays). You can translate exactly for us, DK, given our inability in Hindi. Dinesh Karthik: First up, he said to himself, if I play with a straight bat, I can still middle it. Don't try to do too much. He's almost talking himself into saying he doesn't need to do anything out of the ordinary. He's pretty disappointed with what he did, but I hope he listens to himself. Michael Atherton: I mean, it's interesting, isn't it? Because it implies that he's played so much by instinct that instinct just takes over no matter what he's telling himself to do. DK translates what Rishabh Pant was saying! 🤓🔊 — Sky Sports Cricket (@SkyCricket) June 23, 2025 STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Earlier, DK had described the contrast between Pant and Rahul's innings as 'Classical music at one end, hip-hop at the other.' However, after that Pant-to-Pant chat, the Indian wicketkeeper-batter started batting maturely keeping the conditions in mind. At lunch, India are 153/3 and have a lead of 159 runs. Rahul is unbeaten at 72 off 157 balls, and Pant is on 31 off 59.

Team India slammed for lack of discipline in Headingley Test: 'Improving your fielding is in your hands'
The Shubman Gill-led Indian team was guilty of putting down multiple chances, with Yashasvi Jaiswal alone accounting for three dropped catches, that allowed England to nearly cancel out India's first innings total of 471. read more The Indian team was guilty of wasting multiple opportunities during England's first innings in the first Test at Headingley. Reuters Former batter Aakash Chopra slammed the Shubman Gill-led Indian team for their poor fielding in the first Test against England in Headingley , allowing the home team to nearly cancel out their first innings total. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was guilty of dropping three catches while the likes of wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant and senior spinner Ravindra Jadeja – a gun fielder – fluffed chances, allowing England to post 465 on the board. This was after India suffered a batting collapse, losing their last seven wickets for 41 runs to get bowled out for 471. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Harry Brook was a key beneficiary of the dropped chances; he was batting on nought when he was caught by Mohammed Siraj at midwicket off a no-ball by Jasprit Bumrah. He would go on to get two more reprieves before finally getting caught at deep backward square on 99 off Prasidh Krishna's bowling. 'Indian team has let themselves down massively' 'It sounds cliche - catches win matches - but it's true. There are disciplinary things among which some things are in your hands. Holding catches is in your hands. Improving your fielding is in your hands,' ex-India opener Chopra said on his YouTube channel. 'Fielding and overstepping, these are the things where you have to look within, and that is where I think the Indian team has let themselves down massively. They would be hurting because they dropped catches and bowled no-balls,' he added. Despite the dropped chances, India managed to collect a slender six-run lead, thanks primarily to Jasprit Bumrah (5/83) collecting collecting his 14th Test five-for . Bumrah had accounted for all three English wickets that fell on the second day, and could have had more had the chances been taken. Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj were also among the wickets even though they conceded more than a hundred runs, the latter going at over six-an-over for his 3/128.
