Odisha to identify Bangladeshis, disengage them from jobs in State
The Odisha government on Monday (May 19, 2025) announced that individuals from Bangladesh would be identified and removed from employment across the State.
'We have a stated position to identify Bangladeshis staying illegally in Odisha. Now, we will make sure that no Bangladeshi is engaged through any outsourcing companies in the State,' said Prithiviraj Harichandan, State Law Minister.
When contacted, Pinak Mishra, Deputy Inspector General of Police of Special Task Force, said, 'If Bangladeshis are involved in any organised crime, we will surely track them.'
Initially, the focus of identification would be on the six coastal districts accessible to Bangladeshis through the sea route.
Last year, the Odisha government directed all district administrations to carry out a comprehensive identification drive to trace Bangladeshi intruders across the State. Officials were instructed to form joint teams comprising personnel from block offices, tehsils, and police stations to identify illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, following unrest in Bangladesh.
In a response submitted in the Odisha Legislative Assembly, the government stated that 3,740 Bangladeshi nationals had been identified as staying illegally in the State, and their deportation was under consideration.
Of these, the highest number— 1,649—was found in Kendrapara district, followed by 1,112 in Jagatsinghpur. Malkangiri and Nabarangpur districts reported 655 and 106 illegal Bangladeshi residents, respectively. Intrusion by Bangladeshi nationals was believed to occur primarily via the sea route along Odisha's eastern coastline.

Malegaon police arrest suspended nayab tehsildar and wife in delayed birth & death certificates case
Nashik: The Malegaon Camp police arrested the suspended a nayab tehsildar and his wife on Friday in relation to the issuance of delayed birth and death certificates. The couple have been remanded in police custody until June 23. According to the Malegaon police, the case involving the issuance of fake delayed birth and death certificates was registered in Dec 2024 by tehsildar Vishal Sonawane after former BJP MP Kirit Somaiya raised the issue. Somaiya claimed that hundreds of certificates were issued to facilitate the alleged rehabilitation of Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingyas in Malegaon town by the relevant authorities. Following this, investigations were conducted by the investigating officer, Deepak Jadhav. "The role of the then nayab tehsildar, Sandeep Dharankar, came to light, and he was made a co-accused in the case on Feb 18, 2025. Since then, the officer was absconding," the senior police officer said. Meanwhile, further investigations revealed a large number of transactions in the bank account of the accused man's wife, leading to her inclusion as an accused. Police had been searching for the two people for the last two months, but they evaded the authorities. Finally, police apprehended both from Nashik and arrested them. It is to be noted that former tehsildar, Nitin Kumar Devre, and nayab tehsildar Dharankar had already been suspended by state govt following the issuance of fake delayed birth and death certificates. The complaint resulted in the suspension of the two officers and three other clerks pending inquiry. A special investigation team (SIT) was formed in Jan to investigate the case. The nayab tahsildar was arrested after the chargesheet was filed in a court of law, police said. So far, four complaints have been registered with the Malegaon Camp police, resulting in 10 arrests, and investigations are ongoing.

KP, J'khand cops bust Bokaro illegal arms unit
Kolkata: Kolkata and Jharkhand cops, in a joint operation, busted an improvised firearms manufacturing unit in Bokaro in the early hours of Saturday. The Special Task Force (STF) of Kolkata Police, Jharkhand Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and Gandhinagar Police, raided a warehouse in front of Kaberi Marriage Hall at Jaridih Uppar Bazar. Two individuals were caught manufacturing illegal firearms. The entire operation, including exchange of firearms, was being run from the marriage hall. The suspects were identified as Keshav Kumar, 35, from Khagaria, Bihar, and Praven Kumar, 53, from Munger, also in Bihar. Cops recovered an extensive cache of weapons and manufacturing equipment, including six semi-finished pistols, nine pistol bodies, six pistol sliders, and thirteen pistol barrel plates. Additionally, cops seized approximately Rs 1,00,000 in cash and specialised tools used in firearms manufacturing. This marks the 18th successful joint operation by the Kolkata Police STF in neighbouring states in past three years.

Bangladeshi arrested with dual identity cards, triggers BJP vs Trinamool spat
A Bangladeshi national was arrested at an immigration point in West Bengal while attempting to enter the country using an Indian identity card. The arrested person, Salim Sheikh (31) from Murshidabad, was found to have dual sources said a Bangladeshi identity card was seized from his possession during checks at the Mahdipur Immigration Point in Malda. The card showed his name to be Mohammad Dilwar (30) from investigation revealed that he was using an Indian identity card to pose as a local resident. The police also recovered an Aadhaar card, voter card, passport, visa, and some Indian currency from his possession. The English Bazaar police took Sheikh into custody and produced him before the Malda District Court. The court sent him to six-day police police officer Pradeep Kumar Yadav said an investigation into the incident has been launched.
