Osorio returns to Toronto after suffering lower-body injury training with Canada
HOUSTON — Veteran midfielder Jonathan Osorio has left the Canada camp at the CONCACAF Gold Cup with a lower-body injury.

Canada Soccer, in a social media post, said the Toronto FC captain will miss the rest of the tournament. The injury occurred in training the day before Canada's 1-1 draw with Curacao on Saturday.

'Oso will return to Toronto FC today for further evaluation,' it said in a social media post Sunday.

With 85 caps, the 33-year-old Osorio was the most experienced member of coach Jesse Marsch's squad. He had yet to play at the tournament.

Osorio was sidelined with a shoulder injury April 30 in a Canadian Championship loss to CF Montreal, returning May 24 off the Toronto bench in an MLS game against Nashville SC.

Despite a smaller tournament and sweltering heat, the Rob & Tricia Morneau Memorial Baseball Tournament had a record year in support of Windsor-Essex youth. The three-day tournament wrapped up on Sunday at Riverside Baseball Park following the championship game. Derek Kozar, who has helped organize the tournament for years, said the U13 competition raised about $10,000 due to sponsorships. This year, the tournament featured eight teams in the A and below division from Windsor to Barrie. In 2016, Rob passed away in a workplace accident, and one year later Tricia passed away from cancer. Both held a significant presence in the minor sports scene. 'Both of Rob Morneau's kids were highly involved in baseball and hockey in Riverside, and the money goes there, and it's earmarked to help kids that otherwise couldn't afford registration to [play],' Kozar said. Tempo GM Monica Wright Rogers plotting out Toronto roster a year before WNBA debut
TORONTO – Monica Wright Rogers is just about ready to shift the Toronto Tempo into a new gear. Wright Rogers has been focused on the business side of the new WNBA franchise in her first four months as the Tempo's inaugural general manager. But in the coming months, she'll turn her attention to assembling the on-court product before Toronto's debut in the 2026 season. 'It's been a very busy time, and I know that it's important right now to really get into the community, to learn the landscape of the sports industry here in Toronto and in Canada, and to continue to push the Tempo name out there,' said Wright Rogers after speaking at a sports industry conference in downtown Toronto. 'There is going to be a point where I shift focuses here and really start focusing on the task at hand, which is building out the Toronto Tempo's roster and staff.' Toronto's roster will take shape over the next 12 months. An as-yet unscheduled expansion draft after the 2025 regular season will be the first opportunity for the Tempo and Portland's new franchise to select some players. Then the regular draft and free agency in early 2026 will help Wright Rogers complete Toronto's lineup. 'Before all that we are going to hire our head coach, so those are the big to do's on my list,' said Wright Rogers, who played in the WNBA for seven seasons and was previously the assistant GM of the Phoenix Mercury. 'I think it's all about the strategy and that's why it is important for me to understand the landscape here. 'That plays a role in the strategy of what players would be the right fit for this organization and what staff will be appropriate to not only lead us on the court, but lead us off the court as well.' Wright Rogers was one of the panellists at the espnW Summit Canada, a conference on the growth of women's sport in downtown Toronto, on Wednesday. During her talk, she noted that the WNBA is a veteran-centric league, with rookies usually taking two or three years to fully develop and keep pace with their more experienced peers. As a result, she expects free agency to be the most important step in building the Tempo's roster. Toronto Raptors president Masai Ujiri has noted in the past that he tries to target Canadian and international players because playing outside the United States can sometimes be a tough sell for American NBA players. Wright Rogers doesn't anticipate that being an issue for the Tempo. 'I'm looking for the best players, but I think Canada has some of the best players in the league,' said Wright Rogers, noting that the WNBA's current group of international players is also very strong. 'I think specifically WNBA players are not foreign to playing internationally because a lot of us have, when I was a player included, have played in the WNBA, and then we play internationally in the off-season. 'It won't be a big pain point for players to come across the border in that way or come across the water in that way. They're used to it.' Wright Rogers was named the GM of the Tempo on Feb. 20. She said she wasn't expecting such excitement around the announcement, but found it an encouraging sign for her future roster. 'I love that because, to me, that warm embrace and appetite and just the hospitality that I feel, I know our staff and players are going to feel when they get here as well,' she said, standing in a courtyard at the Evergreen Brick Works. 'That makes me really happy, because it's like people enter this team and they come on board and they just get a big Canadian hug.' Raptors left out as Kevin Durant traded from Suns to Rockets
Kevin Durant is on the move again and mercifully, rumours that he'd become a Raptor can officially be put to rest. Article content Durant was dealt Sunday by the Phoenix Suns to the Houston Rockets, ESPN first reported, though it can't become official until July 6 due to a contractual issue with incoming Phoenix guard Jalen Green (who also might be re-routed since the Suns already have Devin Booker and Bradley Beal needing guard minutes). Article content Article content Article content While various teams had been pursuing the all-time great scoring forward, the offers had been underwhelming, which is partly why the Raptors became a buzzy potential landing spot in recent weeks as the Suns tried to get the price up. While Toronto had some interest, it wasn't to the extent Phoenix had hoped to portray. Article content In the end, the 15-time all-star, who turns 37 in September but still averaged 26.6 points a game last season for the disappointing Suns, didn't go for all that much. Green, taken second overall in 2021, averaged 21 points, but has poor shot selection and a lot of growing still to do. He has so far been eclipsed by draft mates like Evan Mobley, Cade Cunningham, Scottie Barnes, Franz Wagner, former teammate Alperen Sengun and Trey Murphy III. Phoenix also receives the 10th pick of Wednesday's draft (which funnily enough belonged to Phoenix originally before it was dealt to Brooklyn as part of the trade that brought Durant to the Valley of the Sun, before the Nets traded it on to the Rockets), Canadian national team starter Dillon Brooks and five second round picks. Article content Despite Durant's age and injury history, the deal seems like a no-brainer for Houston, which finished second in the tough Western Conference last season and is coached by Durant's favourite, Ime Udoka. Durant had hoped to return to Texas. He burst onto the scene with one of the greatest freshman seasons in NCAA history back in 2006-07 while playing in Austin. The Rockets didn't have to surrender promising big man Jabari Smith Jr. or Reed Sheppard, the second pick last year, or even intriguing guard Cam Whitmore. Article content With Durant and Sengun, they have a pair of spectacular offensive talents, a young defensive dynamo in Amen Thompson, Smith and Tari Eason helping up front and veteran former Raptor Fred VanVleet at point guard. Article content Phoenix failed to get a high-end prospect or top of the lottery draft pick and still has a gigantic hole at centre and no traditional starting level point guard while retaining all kinds of salary cap issues.
