MBKS, Bomba empower Kuching villages with fire safety training under Safe City initiative

KUCHING (April 27): Kuching South City Council (MBKS), in collaboration with the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (Bomba) Sarawak Zon 1, have conducted a fire safety awareness programme, aimed at empowering local village communities with essential fire prevention and emergency response skills.
The two-day programme, held in the Tabuan Jaya area, saw the participation of 50 residents from five villages namely Kampung Tabuan Paya, Kampung Tabuan Jaya Tengah, Kampung Tabuan Dayak (Bukit), Kampung Sungai Nada, and Kampung Tabuan Laru.
Participants underwent both theoretical and hands-on training, including fire suppression simulations and the proper use of firefighting equipment.
Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, in his speech at the event, emphasised that fire safety is a shared responsibility and called for similar initiatives to be extended to more villages and residential areas.
'This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to building a more resilient and prepared community.
'It is not just about lectures – it is about empowering the communities with essential knowledge and practical training to respond effectively when fire incidents occur.
'MBKS believes that safety begins at home, and therefore, we will continue to work with partners such as Bomba to expand such programmes to other areas within the council's jurisdiction,' said Wee.
As part of its Safe City Programme initiative, MBKS contributed 10 units of fire extinguishers to the five villages under its jurisdiction to further enhance local preparedness.
Meanwhile, Bomba Sarawak Deputy Director Tiong Ling Hii said the initiative was designed as a platform to raise awareness and impart life-saving knowledge.
It also introduced the concept of 'community firefighters' where individuals were trained to act as first responders before emergency services arrive.
'This programme differs from traditional fire awareness or prevention campaigns.

'We cannot imagine a world without language. It is not merely a tool of communication, but also the vessel through which culture, history, and human thought are preserved and passed down,' he added. Adding on, Tiong described public-speaking competitions as 'excellent platforms' for the younger generation to showcase the power of language while inspiring others through thoughtful expression. 'We look forward to another round of outstanding speeches this year, filled with passion, intellect, and insight from our bright young talents across the state.' Highlighting the increasing importance of language skills in a world shaped by regional cooperation and rapid digital transformation, Tiong regarded the ability to speak multiple languages fluently as 'no longer a luxury, but a necessity'. 'Being trilingual opens doors to global dialogue, mutual respect, and new opportunities. 'Don't be afraid of making mistakes, every attempt and every interaction is a step forward. Speak up, express yourself, and embrace the world around you.' MBKS upgrading open spaces to enhance quality of life

KUCHING (June 18): Two open spaces — at Lorong Bayor Bukit 14 and Lorong F, Taman BDC — are undergoing landscape upgrading by the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) and the National Landscape Department. In a statement, Kuching South mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng expressed appreciation for the funding support provided by the National Landscape Department and reaffirmed the council's commitment to improving community spaces. 'MBKS will continue to explore further improvements that strengthen community spaces, foster intergenerational interaction, and elevate the quality of life in Kuching South,' he said. He added that the council remains committed to creating a city that prioritises the health, development, and happiness of residents across all age groups through continuous infrastructure upgrades and service enhancements. On the upgrading at Lorong Bayor Bukit 14, Wee said it is being implemented under the Development of Living Environment Landscape initiative, and is scheduled to be completed within 16 weeks. 'The project officially commenced on June 11, and its expected completion is on Oct 1 this year. 'This initiative will see the transformation of the open space located within a residential area into a safe, welcoming recreational hub for the surrounding community. Wee (seated in an excavator) performs the symbolic earth-breaking ceremony for the project at Lorong F, Taman BDC. 'Key upgrades include the construction of a new footpath with proper drainage, installation of a children playset, fitness equipment, gazebo, concrete table tennis table, hopscotch game, solar-powered lighting, and new trees and shrubs,' he added. Meanwhile, Wee said the upgrading at Lorong F, Taman BDC commenced on June 9 and its expected completion date is set for Sept 29 this year. 'The works will include a new entrance pavilion and signage, upgraded walkways, modern playsets for children, outdoor fitness equipment for seniors, and the planting of new trees and shrubs — all of which aim to make the park more inviting, safe, and accessible to all users. 'This park has long served the BDC community, and it is our responsibility to ensure that it evolves to meet the growing needs of our children and elderly.' He added that public parks and open spaces play a crucial role in fostering community interaction, healthy lifestyles, and environmental sustainability. He also emphasised the significance of enhancing parks and open spaces in line with the council's commitment to the Child Friendly Cities Initiative (CFCI) and the promotion of an age-friendly city. 'Open spaces, such as theses ones, are vital to encourage active lifestyles, community bonding, and metal well-being, particularly among our children and elders.
