Tiong: Mutual respect is the cornerstone of national unity among multi-cultural Malaysia

Tiong (second row, centre) joins Rumah Simon residents for a group photo during the event. SIBU (June 16): Mutual respect among the multi-racial and multi-religious Malaysians must remain the cornerstone in strengthening national unity, said Dato Sri Tiong King Sing. The Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture said Malaysia's multi-cultural society requires a harmonious approach built on respect and understanding to ensure social well-being and smooth daily interactions. 'We live in a unique country made up of people from diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds. Without mutual respect, it would be difficult to maintain the peace and harmony we've enjoyed all this while,' he said during the 'Ngiling Bidai' (closing of Gawai celebration) at Rumah Simon Ason, KM27 Jalan Sibu-Durin near here on Saturday. Tiong, who is also Dudong assemblyman and Bintulu MP, said that extremist views propagated by certain political parties could threaten national stability and spark discord among the people. 'We must realise that even within a family, harmony is only possible when there is mutual respect. 'Likewise, in a country, only through goodwill and mutual understanding can we build a peaceful and prosperous future,' he said. Tiong (fourth right), witnessed by Simon (third right), strikes the gong to officiate the 'Ngiling Bidai'. On another note, he called on longhouses to officially form and register their village development and security committees (JKKK), as well as to open their own bank accounts. He said this was crucial for the smooth disbursement of government allocations for various development projects benefiting rural communities. 'The government is committed to helping the people, but efficient and well-organised management is necessary to ensure aid and projects are implemented effectively and transparently,' he added. As part of his continued commitment to rural development, Tiong announced an allocation of RM100,000 for Rumah Simon under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP). He also personally contributed RM15,000 to the women's bureau of the longhouse's JKKK, in recognition of their role in strengthening community institutions. multi-cultural national unity society Tiong King Sing

Sibu Hospital's psychiatric ward in need of upgrades

SIBU (June 15): The psychiatric ward at Sibu Hospital requires various upgrades, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing has observed. He pointed this out yesterday when met by reporters after visiting the ward, which was hosting its Gawai Dayak celebration. 'I notice that there are many aspects that require upgrades, and improvements. 'I believe we can sit down, explore deeper into understanding the situation, and come up with potential solutions,' said the Bintulu MP and Dudong assemblyman. He also encouraged the ward's board of visitors to run programmes meant to raise awareness among the patients' families, after learning from the board's chairman Kapitan Peter Lau that some patients had been residing there for extended periods. 'Whether they (patients) have fully recovered or are still in the process of recovery, it is important for family members to gather and participate in a session with doctors and nurses to support the healing process. 'They should come to offer their services also to the (family) members (in the ward). 'They should not just neglect them (patients). 'This is why, at times, the community's behaviour should not set such an example for others, or for the community, to learn how to treat its members. 'This behaviour is very inappropriate. I do not encourage this kind of behaviour. I hope the visitors' board would also speak with the family members.' Nonetheless, Tiong expressed gratitude to the doctors, the nurses and other healthcare workers for working tirelessly in helping the patients in their recovery journey. In his remarks, Lau thanked Tiong for donating two units of air-conditioners to the ward. He also hoped that a psychiatric nursing home could be established here for patients to learn the skills to become independent. 'Perhaps a (psychiatric) nursing centre can be developed so that chronic patients wouldn't have to stay at the hospital for a long period of time. 'With minimal guidance and nurses monitoring them, patients can learn to make handicrafts, plant vegetables and more at the nursing home,' suggested Lau. Sibu hospital director Dr Nanthakumar Thirunavukkarasu also spoke at the same event where Tiong later announced a grant of RM10,000 for the ward to acquire a projector, a projector screen, and also to upgrade the electrical capacity. The minister also announced a PA system for the ward. lead psychiatric ward Sibu Hospital Tiong King Sing
