Lottery winner was ‘jumping up and down.' But he wasn't done scratching ticket

Miami Herald01-05-2025

Thanks to his love for the Monopoly board game, a Missouri man is now a lottery jackpot winner.
'I'm a sucker for anything Monopoly,' the winner told Missouri Lottery officials after accepting his prize in the Monopoly Doubler game.
He said he was at a Midwest Petroleum in Ballwin when he spotted just a few tickets left on the game's roll. After consulting with his wife, he bought the remaining tickets.
'We were scratching the last ticket and saw a $20,000 prize,' the winner told lottery officials in a May 1 news release. 'I was jumping up and down. I was so excited to win!'
But $20,000 wasn't all he won.
Turns out, he won one of the game's top prize of $100,000.
'After we calmed down a bit, my wife said, 'Maybe we should finish scratching it!'' he said. 'That's when we found out we won $100,000!'
There are three jackpot prizes remaining in the game, which costs $5 to play.
Ballwin is about a 20-mile drive west from St. Louis.

Hasbro (HAS) has reportedly laid off 3% of its global workforce as tariffs boost costs at the toy maker. According to The Wall Street Journal, the laid-off employees, who spanned departments and regions worldwide, were informed of the cuts on Monday. Roughly 150 employees are affected by the layoffs at the maker of Monopoly and Nerf, based on Hasbro's 4,985 global staffers cited in its 2024 annual report. According to Reuters, it sources about half of its toys and games sold in the U.S. from China, which has faced a spike in tariffs on its exports into the U.S. under the Trump administration. Hasbro didn't immediately respond to an Investopedia request for comment. In April, Hasbro stuck with its full-year forecasts for the year though it noted the 'uncertainty of the current tariff environment.' Hasbro shares, which entered Wednesday up by a fifth this year, were flat in premarket trading. Toymaker Hasbro cuts 3% of its total workforce, WSJ reports

(Reuters) -Hasbro has cut 3% of its global workforce in a bid to cut costs amid higher tariffs, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday. Swirling worries about a global trade war after U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs on trading partners have piled pressure on the toy industry that was already struggling with weak demand. Hasbro did not immediately respond to Reuters request for comment. The current job cuts are part of the latest round of a multi-year restructuring at the maker of Monopoly board games and Nerf blasters, the Wall Street Journal added. In December 2023, Hasbro had said it would cut 900 jobs globally, nearly a year after saying it would reduce 15% of its workforce due to weaker sales. The company had roughly 4,985 employees globally, according to its fiscal 2024 annual filing. Wife interrupts husband's shower to show off MO lottery win. ‘This isn't real'

Many lottery players need to scratch off the entirety of their lottery ticket to reveal their big win, but a bowler from Missouri made quick work with her recent prize. The woman, who purchased a $5,000,000 Fortune ticket at Hamilton Bowl in Hamilton, scratched off just one number to find out she won one of the game's top prizes. Missouri Lottery officials said the woman found some past winning tickets while packing up her bowling gear, so she used them to splurge on the $50 game. She went home and began scratching off her ticket, but she didn't get far. 'The very first number I scratched was 63 and right under that was $50,000!' the winner told lottery officials. Instead of waiting for her husband to finish his shower, she did what most spouses would do and wasted no time to show off her big win. 'I burst in there and I was like I won $50,000!' she said. 'And he was like, 'No way!'' Her ticket was one of 40 $50,000 prizes the game offers. There are also three $1 million tickets, as well as three grand prizes of $5 million. The winner's husband may have had difficulty believing her win, but even she was skeptical. 'All night long I'm thinking that this isn't real,' she said. 'It wasn't until I took it back to the bowling alley the next day and scanned it that I thought, 'This is real.'' Hamilton is about a 65-mile drive northeast from Kansas City.
