Malaysia among countries setting an example in global women's leadership
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is among the countries that serve as a global example in providing space and opportunities for women to empower themselves and take on leadership roles, said ASEAN Women's Economic Forum (WEF) 2025 president Datin Dr Hartini Osman.
She said this was one of the main focuses of the forum, which serves as an open, inclusive, and voluntary platform that brings together women from around the world to voice their perspectives and strengthen their roles across various sectors.
'WEF ASEAN 2025 serves as a gathering point for women not just from Malaysia, but across the region and globally. It is a voluntary, compassionate, and inclusive space that champions women's right to be heard,' she said.
'The most beautiful part is that they want to learn from Malaysia's example in how we provide space and opportunities for women through this forum,' she told Bernama after the opening ceremony of WEF ASEAN 2025, at the Dewan Perdana, Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI), today.
The three-day forum, themed 'Women Leaders Beyond Borders: Shaping the Future of the ASEAN Sheconomy', was officiated by the Prime Minister's wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail.
According to Hartini, the forum, which involves participants from more than 32 countries, offers valuable opportunities for women entrepreneurs to expand their businesses and build networks through business matching sessions. It also encourages the participation of youth, students, educators, and changemakers to engage and benefit from the platform.
She added that this edition marks the 148th series of the Women's Economic Forum (WEF), which is active in over 150 countries in support of the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to gender equality.
Hartini also expressed her gratitude to Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail for officiating the forum, describing her speech as deeply moving and resonant with participants, as it reflected values of humanity and compassion.
'She is a remarkable female leader, a symbol of motherhood, love, and truth. She leads by example, speaking on issues related to women, families, and the empowerment of women,' she said.
Touching on the challenges faced by women today, Hartini underscored the importance of unity in advocating for women's aspirations and achieving meaningful societal change.
'When we unite, our collective voice becomes powerful and truly heard. If we work sincerely, with pure intentions for the sake of Allah, then insya-Allah, the wellbeing of women will continue to be uplifted,' she added.

KUALA LUMPUR: Maybank Foundation and Anthill Fabric Gallery have marked a milestone with the groundbreaking of a weaving training centre in Argao, Cebu in the Philippines. "This expansion also reflects the programme's role in raising the floor of socio-economic inclusion across Asean, ensuring that underserved communities gain not only visibility, but also meaningful access to livelihoods, heritage preservation, and resilient ecosystems, where opportunities are made available to all," she said. Looking ahead, a new training centre is set to be established in Bukidnon province, envisioned as an all-in-one facility that will combine weaving, natural dye techniques, and fibre production, emphasising the use of abaca and other indigenous materials.

Trump says US conducted 'very successful' strikes on three Iranian nuclear sites
WASHINGTON — The United States (US) President Donald Trump said Saturday that American forces completed 'very successful' airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear sites amid fears of a wider conflagration in the region, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported. Trump said a 'full payload of' bombs was dropped on the 'primary' Iranian nuclear site at Fordo, and additional strikes were conducted at the facilities at Natanz and Esfahan. The Fordo nuclear facility is an underground uranium enrichment site near Qom, Iran's deepest and most fortified nuclear installation designed to withstand conventional airstrikes. Iran had strongly warned Trump against involvement in the conflict with Israel, saying if the US directly entered the hostilities, it would lead to 'irreparable consequences'. Trump has repeatedly threatened to take military action against Tehran and maintained that the US would not allow Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon, something Iran has repeatedly denied that it seeks to acquire. Hostilities broke out June 13 when Israel launched airstrikes on several sites across Iran, including military and nuclear facilities, prompting Tehran to launch retaliatory strikes. Malaysia proposes expansion of OIC-TPS
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has proposed expanding the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Trade Preferential System and the reduction of trade barriers to strengthen economic ties among its member states. The proposal was presented by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan during Malaysia's national statement at the 51st Session of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers Meeting in Istanbul, Turkiye, on Saturday. Mohamad said OIC, as the second-largest intergovernmental organisation in the world, holds vast potential for strategic partnership. He cited the inaugural ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council-China Summit led by Malaysia in May, which witnessed a new historic economic partnership being forged, as a milestone in regional cooperation. 'Malaysia believes that this can support developing States to circumvent the impacts of the US-China trade war,' he said. Held under the themed 'The OIC In A Transforming World', the meeting was attended by more than 40 foreign ministers from OIC's 57 member states. The meeting also saw high-level participation from nearly 30 international organisations including UN, Arab League, Developing Eight (D-8), International Organisation for Migration and World Trade Organisation, reflecting the urgency of the current regional situation.
