Tom Cleverley in advanced talks to be Plymouth Argyle head coach

New York Times12-06-2025

Plymouth Argyle are in advanced talks to appoint Tom Cleverley as their new head coach.
Plymouth — who will play in League One next season following relegation from the Championship — have been seeking a replacement for Miron Muslic, who joined German second division side Schalke last month.
Muslic, who led Plymouth to the FA Cup fifth round including a fourth-round victory over Liverpool, had himself only been appointed in January to replace Wayne Rooney.

In May, Cleverley parted company with Watford, his first managerial position, at the end of the 2024-25 campaign after 14 months in charge.
The former midfielder won 20 of his 59 matches in charge at Vicarage Road, with the club finishing 14th in the Championship last season — 11 points off the play-offs for promotion to the Premier League and eight points clear of relegation.
The 35-year-old — who was capped 13 times for England — retired from playing at the end of the 2022-23 season and had coached Watford's Under-18 team prior to coaching the first-team following the dismissal of Valerien Ismael.
Cleverley made 146 appearances across seven seasons at Watford, having previously played for Manchester United, Wigan Athletic, Aston Villa and Everton in the Premier League.

Nick Saban Possibly Playing Major Role in Recruitment of 5-Star Linebacker

Nick Saban Possibly Playing Major Role in Recruitment of 5-Star Linebacker originally appeared on Athlon Sports. "Pulling out all the stops" just means different when it comes to the Alabama Crimson Tide recruiting elite football players. Advertisement On Friday, 2026, five-star edge rusher Anthony Jones took his official visit to Alabama. Jones shared his experience via Instagram, and making an appearance was none other than former Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban. Mandatory Credit: Gary Cosby Jr.-USA TODAY Network via Imagn Images Gary Cosby Jr.-USA TODAY Network via Imagn Images Saban spent 17 seasons in Tuscaloosa, winning double-digit games every season sans his first. More impressively, he won six national titles, coached four Heisman Trophy Award winners, and won a ludicrous 16 bowl games. He retired following the conclusion of the 2023 season, but his successor, former Washington Huskies head coach Kalen DeBoer, hoped Saban would stay involved with the program in some capacity. Advertisement Saban meeting with the top prospect's family on Friday is one way to remain invested in the program. Jones is a top-ten edge rush prospect in the class of 2026 per 247Sports. Alongside Alabama, his recruitment has no shortage of suitors, with him holding offers from the Oregon Ducks, Texas A&M Aggies, Miami Hurricanes, Auburn Tigers, LSU Tigers, Clemson Tigers, Colorado Buffaloes, Florida Gators, Florida State Seminoles, and the Georgia Bulldogs, among others. Alabama has two hard commits from edge rushers in the 2026 class, but Jones would undoubtedly be their biggest get. Cooper Petagna, the National Recruiting Analyst for 247Sports, says, "Jones displays a collegiate-ready frame in conjunction with an explosive lower half that bodes well for his ability to make an impact sooner rather than later at the next level." 📝 Spain Under-21s lose 3-1 to England, bow out of the tournament

La Rojita bid farewell in the quarterfinals of the European Under-21 Championship, after falling to England 1-3. Javi Guerra had converted a penalty for Spain's goal in the last minutes of the first half, in a match that was already looking very complicated for the youth team led by Santi Denia from very early on. Advertisement England was winning by two goals in the first quarter of an hour. James McAtee, a Manchester City player, opened the scoring at 10 for Lee Carsley's team, and five minutes later, Harvey Elliot —from Liverpool— increased the difference. The discount kept La Rojita in the game and they had chances to equalize in the second half, but the goal did not arrive and already in the final minutes of the game, there was another penalty, this time in favor of England, which Elliot Anderson exchanged for a goal to sentence the game and Spain's elimination. 📸 Christian Hofer - 2025 Getty Images Everything indicates that this elimination will be the final point of Denia's cycle as Spain Under-21 coach, a very successful cycle that included gold in Paris 2024.
