
M&S resumes some online orders - but Irish customers will have to wait
Retailer Marks & Spencer resumed taking some online orders for clothing lines for customers in England, Scotland and Wales on Tuesday after a 46-day hiatus following a cyberattack.
But Irish customers will have to wait, with online ordering still paused for customers in the Republic and Northern Ireland.
M&S said delivery to Northern Ireland will resume in the 'coming weeks', as will click and collect services, next-day delivery, nominated-day delivery and international ordering.
'It's not the full range at the moment. We've focused on best sellers and newness,' an M&S spokesperson said.

The 141-year-old M&S stopped taking clothing and home orders through its website and app on April 25th following problems with contactless pay and click and collect services over the Easter holiday weekend.
It first disclosed it had been managing a 'cyber incident' on April 22nd.
M&S said last month it expected online disruption to continue into July and forecast the attack would cost it about £300 million (€354.5 million) in lost operating profit in its 2025/26 financial year, though it hopes to halve the impact through insurance and cost control.
The disruption to systems also affected M&S' ability to get food and clothing into stores, which meant it lost out on demand boosted by warm and sunny weather.
Analysts have predicted the end of season clothing sale will be larger than normal and with deeper discounts.
Taking account of Tuesday's rise, M&S shares are down 9.5% since it disclosed the attack.
M&S said hackers broke into its systems by tricking employees at a third-party contractor, skirting its digital defences to launch a cyberattack.
The group has said it will use the crisis to accelerate improvements to its technology.
In recent weeks, several other major retailers across the globe have disclosed cyber incidents, including UK grocer the Co-op Group, German sportswear group Adidas, luxury jeweller Cartier and U.S. lingerie company Victoria's Secret. - Reuters

Neighbourhood wine shops and bars are popping up everywhere. Who's behind them?
The decline of the high street has been well documented. In recent years, the suburbs of Dublin, as with many other cities, have seen a decline in traditional retail shops as consumers move online or to large shopping centres. Coffee shops and nail bars seem to benefit from changing consumer habits, but they are not alone. Another less obvious sector is the wine shop or wine bar. Over the past decade a number of independent wine shops have opened up, often in areas with more competitive rents, selling an eclectic range of wines, frequently low intervention and usually from small producers. Received wisdom has it that in order to survive, you also need to offer wine by the glass accompanied by a few nibbles. Thus you end up with part wine shop, part wine bar with links to the local community. Most of them seem to be doing very well. The originals in the genre include La Touche in Greystones, Co Wicklow, Grapevine in Dalkey, 64wine in Glasthule, Red Island in Skerries and Green Man in Terenure. Other newish wine shops in Dublin include The Wine Pair on Clanbrassil Street, Lilith in Stonybatter, Neighbourhood Wine, and Cooper's Bottleshop in Sutton and Clontarf. Roger da Silva runs Pinto Wines in Drumcondra. 'I have three kids, and you can't work until four in the morning and go back at 12 the next day. I lived close to Green Man Wines in Terenure, realised there was no wine shop in Drumcondra, and just made the leap.' Da Silva trained as a sommelier in Portugal. 'I started bartending at 16 and then went on to one of the best hospitality schools in Portugal. I specialised in wine and had a passionate teacher. We are still in touch. I wanted to go to London or Paris, but I had a friend working in Dublin who urged me to come over here, telling me, 'People are very nice'. After 1½ years working in hotels and restaurants I met my wife, local to Drumcondra.' READ MORE Covid was a good thing for him, he believes, making him rethink his priorities. 'I have had amazing support from the local community from day one,' he says. He doesn't serve wine by the glass but does hold tastings every Thursday and Saturday. 'People know each other and see it as a night out. We are niche and people get that.' His palate has a preference for European wines, plus Lebanon and South Africa. 'Of course I am Portuguese, so we have 100-150 Portuguese wines. Maybe I am trying to be niche within a niche!' Seán Gargano of MacCurtain Wine Cellar Bottles at MacCurtain Wine Cellar Trudy Ahern and Séan Gargano are both veterans of the Dublin restaurant scene, having worked front of house in a variety of restaurants and wine bars around the capital. Three years ago they decamped to Cork and opened MacCurtain Wine Cellar on MacCurtain Street. Both are very happy with the move, largely driven by wanting to be close to Ahern's family, but Gargano says, 'I don't think that we could have found a shopfront with a similar style and location in Dublin for anything near the cost here in Cork.' The shop has an excellent range, including many organic, biodynamic and low-intervention wines. About 70 per cent of their business is the wine bar, with customers dropping in for a glass of wine and a plate of nibbles before going on for dinner or a performance in the nearby theatre. Balázs Rakamazi of BaRossa Wines Balázs Rakamazi is a Hungarian who started out in Ireland as a chef. He became more interested in wine and tried to cook in places that stocked good wine. 'It got so wine was giving me inspiration to cook dishes. I realised there wasn't a serious representation of Hungarian wines in Ireland.' So he set up Vinifinesse, a company that imports a portfolio of great wines from central and eastern Europe. Ross Turner, meanwhile, worked in Blackrock Cellar and Mitchell & Son. 'Blackrock Cellar was my local shop,' says Rakamazi, 'so we knew each other. He has the retail experience and has all the contacts. I worked part-time in Pinto Wines to learn a bit.' The two joined forces to open BaRossa Wines, a small, very narrow shop/wine bar in Sandymount, Dublin 4. It is crammed with of fascinating wines, mainly European and not surprisingly, with a sizeable selection from central Europe and what they call the Ancient East, which includes Armenia, Georgia, Greece and more. BaRossa does operate as a wine bar but soon discovered that customers want to book in for private tastings, with up to 11 people sitting at flip-up tables that double as storage areas during the day. 'And sometimes people just pop in for a glass.' Rakamazi and Turner run regular tastings and get a great response from locals. The riesling below is one of their best-selling wines, despite costing €35. 'People try a glass and then buy a bottle to take home', says Rakamazi. Sinéad McCarthy & Paul Gartland of Fíon Eile Fíon Eile ('Another Wine') is a brand new wine shop and event space on the North Circular Road in Phibsborough, Dublin. Sinéad McCarthy and partner Paul Gartland both worked in some of Dublin's finest restaurants for many years before opting for a change. They met while working in Michelin-starred restaurant Chapter One . More recently McCarthy was wine manager in Hawksmoor , Gartland in The Greenhouse and Chapter One again with Mickael Viljanen. Prices at the light-filled spacious shop start at €13.50 and there are a few bottles under €15, but they find customers prefer to pay €20-€21.50 for an interesting bottle of wine. 'Locals here are very adventurous and want to try something different. Ninety per cent of people want recommendations,' says McCarthy. One of their first customers asked if they could have a glass of wine, so they have installed tables and chairs and are offering a changing range of wines by the glass. They hope to run classes and possibly a wine school in a large room to one side of the shop. While the shop will require long hours of work, both seem delighted that there will be fewer late nights, and they may even manage to have dinner together. Sinn Féin's Michelle O'Neill declines to rule out presidential run
Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O'Neill has declined to rule out a bid for the presidency . Asked on Friday if she was considering putting her name forward, Ms O'Neill replied: 'I am working my way through our deliberations as we speak.' The Sinn Féin vice-president said the party had not finalised its deliberations on the subject. 'I think I've plenty to do, being First Minister,' Ms O'Neill said at a press conference in Co Armagh . 'But I would think the fact remains that I could stand for election, I could be elected as Uachtarán na hÉireann, but I can't vote in that election, so that's where there's a deficit and what we need to see is presidential voting rights extended to the North so the Irish citizens in the North can vote.' READ MORE Separately on Friday, former SDLP leader Colum Eastwood told the BBC that people had asked him to consider standing for the presidency. 'I'm going to take the time to think about it,' Mr Eastwood said. While SDLP leader, Mr Eastwood was involved in talks with Fianna Fáil about closer co-operation between the parties, although no agreement was progressed. It is expected that should he run in the presidential election, it would be as a Fianna Fáil candidate. Taoiseach Micheál Martin was asked if Mr Eastwood might stand on his party's behalf but he said there had been 'no contact with me' and 'no engagement that I'm aware of with Fianna Fáil'. Topics the meeting focused on included US tariffs and trade, potential co-operation on gender-based violence, mother and baby institutions and Magdalene laundries . It also addressed infrastructure projects and an air route between Derry and Dublin. . Ministers also discussed the redevelopment of Casement Park GAA stadium in Belfast, a project currently facing a funding shortfall. Last week the UK government said it would allocate £50 million (€59 million) to support the rebuild, with the Irish Government also set to contribute £50 million. However, even with other money from the GAA and Northern Ireland's Executive, the project is about £90 million (€105 million) short of what is required to develop a 34,000-seater stadium. A smaller ground could be built with the approximate £120 million available. At a press conference following the meeting, the Taoiseach, Tánaiste and First Minister and Deputy First Minister were clear that now was the time to proceed. 'I think it is about not letting this moment pass,' Mr Harris said. 'Let's not look back in a number of years and see that this moment was squandered.' The Taoiseach said it was 'very important the moment is seized, when significant amounts of money are now on the table, that the stadium can be built here and can be developed'. Ms O'Neill said it was time for all partners involved to come together and find a way to start the work and complete the project. Meanwhile, Ms Little-Pengelly rejected comments by former taoiseach Leo Varadkar to the BBC on Thursday that Ireland was on a 'trajectory' towards unity . He said the most recent numbers show 'a very clear majority of younger people in Northern Ireland want there to be a new united Ireland'. Economic concerns growing across the island, warns InterTrade Ireland
Concerns about the state of the economy in the coming months have risen sharply since the beginning of the year among businesses on the island of Ireland, but especially in retail and construction, according to a new survey. The InterTrade Ireland poll found that 32 per cent of retail businesses admit to growing anxiety during the first three months of the year, compared with just 15 per cent in the last quarter of 2024. Nerves have worsened, too, in construction, with 24 per cent now concerned, compared with 13 per cent in Q4 of 2024, while 23 per cent of manufacturing firms have concerns, up from 9 per cent, 'likely reflecting cost pressures and market volatility'. One in eight construction firms are seeing orders contract, up by nearly two-thirds in just months, while fewer are seeing their sales grow. Concern is also growing about late payments. READ MORE By comparison, however, hospitality, hotel, leisure and catering businesses across the island are less worried, having risen from 10 per cent to 14 per cent, but it 'still points to growing unease', InterTrade reports. Of all sectors, professional services – accounting, consulting and so on – are the calmest, with just a single percentage point of increase in their concern about the business climate in coming months. Describing the headline figures across all questions as 'broadly positive', Newry-based InterTrade Ireland said 'a closer look reveals a more complex and uneven economic landscape'. 'Ireland continues to post strong headline growth, largely driven by exports, but domestic demand is softening amid rising global uncertainty,' it said, adding that Northern Ireland 'remains relatively resilient', outperforming the United Kingdom average. Businesses on both parts of the island are facing 'historically tight' labour markets, but 'early signs of softening' are appearing. Unemployment in the Republic is steady at 4 per cent, but in Northern Ireland it is 'just 1.8 per cent, one of the lowest on record'. However, subtle shifts are appearing in both parts of the island, with an increasing number of people not being economically activity – an issue that Northern Ireland has struggled with for decades. Unprompted, just under 40 per cent complained that too many new workers have 'a different attitude to work', while a similar number complain that students are not leaving colleges with the skills they need.
