Smoke Trailer: Taron Egerton Hunts a Serial Arsonist in New Apple TV+ Show

Yahoo28-05-2025

Apple TV+ has released a blazing new trailer for its new crime drama, Smoke, starring Emmy Award nominee Taron Egerton. It is set to debut on the streamer on June 27.
Best known for his roles in Robin Hood, Rocketman, Tetris, and the Kingsman film series, Smoke serves as Egerton's latest project following Netflix's Carry-On in 2024. The forthcoming series also marks the actor's latest project with Apple TV+ after he starred as James Keene in the true crime drama Black Bird back in 2022.
'Smoke follows an arson investigator who begrudgingly teams up with a police detective as their race to stop two arsonists ignites a twisted game of secrets and suspicions,' the plot description reads.
Billed as a 'gripping crime drama,' the newly released trailer for Smoke introduces Egerton's Dave Gudsen, an arson investigator unraveling a series of destructive fires. Working alongside Jurnee Smollett's Detective Michell Calderon, who Dave initially doubts due to her lack of experience in arson cases, the two struggle to find significant leads concerning the two serial arsonists. They now must work against the clock before the unfortunate event claims more lives.
'Serial arsonists tend to be powerless in their own lives. They want other people to know what that feels like,' Egerton's Dave said in the trailer.
You can watch the trailer for Smoke down below:
Smoke is inspired by truth.media's Firebug podcast, which was hosted by Kary Antholis. Egerton also serves as one of the show's executive producers. It is created and written by Black Bird creator Dennis Lehane. The rest of the cast includes Rafe Spall, Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, Hannah Emily Anderson, Anna Chlumsky, Adina Porter, Greg Kinnear, and John Leguizamo.
The first two episodes of Smoke will arrive on Apple TV+ on June 27, with new episodes arriving Fridays through August 15.

Jon Bernthal's Punisher Joins Cast of ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day' With Tom Holland

Jon Bernthal is joining Tom Holland in 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day.' Bernthal – who has played The Punisher on a number of TV shows – is reprising his role for the first time on the big screen TheWrap has learned. The gun toting vigilante was most recently seen in Season 1 of 'Daredevil: Born Again.' Bernthal first appeared as The Punisher back in the second season of 'Daredevil' when it was still a Netflix series. He later reprised it for a few episodes in the aforementioned first season of 'Daredevil: Born Again.' He's tapped not only to appear in the second season of that series but also for a Punisher standalone on Disney+ – akin to the 'Werewolf By Night' and 'Guardians of the Galaxy' Christmas special. Bernthal is also co-writing the standalone special. Along with Holland and Bernthal, Zendaya and Jacob Batalon are both tapped to return for the new Spidey film as MJ and Ned respectively. The only other major casting announced is that 'Stranger Things' alum Sadie Sink has joined the film in an unspecified role. Rumors have swirled about her portraying a number of iconic characters from X-Men mainstay Jean Grey to Gwen Stacy – and possibly even Spider-Gwen. 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' – the fourth film in Holland's tenure as the wall crawler – is being directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and is slated for release on July 31, 2026. Cretton also handled directing duties for Marvel's 'Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings' and a few episodes of the upcoming Disney+ series 'Wonder Man.' Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers wrote the script. The casting was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Jon Bernthal Joins Tom Holland in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day'

Jon Bernthal has appeared in several Marvel television series as the stone-cold vigilante known as the Punisher, even headlining his own series. Now he's taking his guns to the big screen. More from The Hollywood Reporter Abigail Breslin, Booboo Stewart to Star in Dramedy Movie 'A Good Fight' (Exclusive) Steven Spielberg Thought 'Jaws' "Would Be the Last Movie I Would Ever Be Given to Direct" How Prime Video Gives Cord-Cutters One-Stop Access to Apple TV+, HBO Max, Paramount+ and More Bernthal has joined Tom Holland in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the latest Spider-Man movie from Sony and Marvel. Destin Daniel Cretton is directing the feature, which will shoot in England this summer and has a July 31, 2026, release date. Much of the movie remains shrouded in mystery. Movie rumor websites have listed upwards of a dozen possible villains, from crime bosses to alien symbiotes, who could appear in the feature, as well as a couple of different versions of the Hulk. The only thing clear at this stage is that Zendaya and Jacob Batalon are reprising their roles as MJ and best friend Ned, although how substantial those roles will be remains unclear. And Stranger Things star Sadie Sink is the big new addition so far. The story takes place after the events of the previous movie, Spider-Man: No Way Home, in which the entire world knew Peter Parker was Spider-Man and then had that knowledge erased. Having Bernthal as the Punisher seems to point to a slightly more grounded angle on the story as the character hails from the gritty street corner of Marvel's universe and, in the comics at least, uses fists, knives and guns to tussle with bad guys, rather than spells or fancy tech. But hey, having him square off against a rampaging Hulk could be fun, too. Bernthal first showed up as vigilante Frank Castle, aka the Punisher, in Marvel's Daredevil Netflix series, then starred in his own series that ran for two seasons. He recently returned for a few episodes in Daredevil: Born Again on Disney+. Marvel is betting on more Punisher and Bernthal in the months and years to come. The character is set to return for season two of Born Again and Marvel is bringing Bernthal back for a Punisher stand-alone feature for Disney+. Bernthal is co-writing the latter. Curiously, one nonnegotiable he had for his return to Daredevil was maintaining the character's violent, R-rated feel. It will be interesting to see how that translates into the more kid-friendly tone of the Spider-Man movies. Bernthal and Holland have a charmed history together when it comes to Marvel. The duo were working on the 2017 feature Pilgrimage when prepping to audition for their Marvel roles. The actors helped each other with their audition tapes. This year, Bernthal's big-screen output has included starring opposite Ben Affleck in The Accountant 2 for Amazon and appearing in the Rami Malek thriller The Amateur for 20th Century Fox. Bernthal is repped by CAA and Sloane Offer. ‘Arcane,' returning from a 3-year hiatus, leads early Best Animated Program Emmy odds

The second and final season of Arcane is poised to shake up the 2025 Emmys. There are 38 submissions this year in the Best Animated Program category, which means there will again be five nominees. Leading the pack, per the Gold Derby odds, is Arcane. More from GoldDerby The 10 most Lynchian items at the David Lynch auction - and how much they sold for Best Drama Writing Emmy predictions: 'The Pitt' takes a risk by submitting 3 episodes 'Jaws' at 50: How Spielberg's movie changes 'horrified' wife of novel writer Peter Benchley Netflix's steampunk action-adventure show came on strong for its first season at the 2022 Emmys, winning Best Animated Program and three trophies for Best Individual Achievement in Animation. Three years later, it's back for Season 2, and there's no reason to think Television Academy members won't be just as enamored this time around. Arcane wrapped up major plot points in the series finale, "The Dirt Under Your Nails," in which destinies clashed in the lead-up to an all-out war. This is the episode that has been submitted for Emmy consideration. READ: The one show best positioned to beat Arcane in our odds is The Simpsons. The longest-running American scripted primetime series ever wrapped up its 36th season in May with its 790th episode. To date, The Simpsons has won 37 Emmys from 102 nominations, including 12 trophies for Best Animated Program. The comedy about the denizens of Springfield most recently prevailed in 2023 for "Treehouse of Horror XXXIII," but was beaten last year by Blue Eye Samurai, which is not currently in the running. This time around, the season premiere, "Bart's Birthday," is being entered for Emmy consideration, which serves a meta take on the show's eventual series finale. Love, Death + Robots has a near-perfect track record at the Emmys, winning 13 of its 15 nominations through the years. It won Best Short Form Animated Program for each of its first three seasons in 2019, 2021, and 2022, but is now competing against the big dogs up in the main Best Animated Program race. (There is no short form animation category this year, possibly due to a dearth of eligible submissions.) Season 4 of the anthology series streamed all 10 episodes on May 15, right at the tail end of the eligibility period. The third episode, "Spider Rose," has been submitted, and focuses on a grieving woman hellbent on revenge at the end of the galaxy. In fourth place is Bob's Burgers, a 13-time nominee in this category and two-time winner (2014 and 2017). Season 15 was split into two parts, with the first part airing at the end of 2024 and the second part airing now and through the summer. The eighth episode, "They Slug Horses, Don't They?," is being put forward for Emmy consideration, in which Tina and Louise get into an argument that escalates across several increasingly graphic "apology" cards. Invincible comes in fifth place for a nomination. Emmy voters will be judging the sixth episode of Season 3, "All I Can Say Is I'm Sorry," where a powerful new figure challenges Markus "Mark" Grayson/Invincible (voiced by Steven Yeun), and helps him to explore the concept of right vs. wrong. The superhero series streams on Prime Video, and received its first Emmy nomination last year for Sterling K. Brown for voicing Angstrom Levy.
