Global uncertainty puts big central banks in a tight spot

Yahoo2 days ago

By Alun John and Naomi Rovnick
LONDON (Reuters) -Central banks are grappling with elevated uncertainty about economic growth and inflation, complicating decision-making, especially for those trying to calibrate policy as they near the end of their rate-cutting cycles.
That's making life hard for investors too. Norway's central bank on Thursday gave markets a shock by cutting interest rates, and even the U.S. Federal Reserve is warning not to put much weight on its policy projections.
1/ SWITZERLAND
The Swiss National Bank cut its benchmark rate to 0% on Thursday, in response, it said, to falling inflation, a stronger Swiss franc and economic uncertainty caused by unpredictable U.S. trade policy.
The big question is whether it will cut rates into negative territory next time. The SNB is keeping all options on the table, but chairman Martin Schlegel says the hurdle to further cuts is higher now rates are at zero.
2/ CANADA
The Bank of Canada held rates at 2.75% in early June and said another cut might be necessary if the economy weakened in the face of tariffs.
That pause was the second in succession for the BoC, after an aggressive cutting cycle which shrank rates by 225 basis points over nine months. Markets anticipate one further 25 bps cut by year-end.
3/ SWEDEN
Sweden's central bank cut its key rate to 2% from 2.25% on Wednesday and said that, with price pressures weak, it may ease further before year-end to boost sluggish growth.
The Riksbank has been one of the more aggressive central banks, with 200 bps of cuts since May 2024.
4/ NEW ZEALAND
Markets expect the Reserve Bank of New Zealand to hold steady on July 9 after a 25 bps rate cut to 3.25% in May to protect the China-focused economy.
The RBNZ also warned that global trade uncertainties made future moves unclear. Markets see one more 25 bps cut this year, on top of the 225 bps of cuts already this cycle.
5/ EURO ZONE
The ECB cut rates earlier this month, its eighth cut since mid-2024, and kept all options on the table for its next meetings.
ECB President Christine Lagarde says the euro zone central bank's 2% inflation target is in reach. The question for investors is whether inflation will undershoot that target, and necessitate further easing.
Markets price in one more rate cut by year-end.
6/ UNITED STATES
The Federal Reserve held rates steady on Wednesday and signalled borrowing costs are still likely to fall in 2025, although Chair Jerome Powell warned against putting too much weight on that projection.
"No one holds these ... rate paths with a great deal of conviction, and everyone would agree that they're all going to be data-dependent," Powell said.
He added that if not for tariffs, rate cuts might be in order given recent inflation readings have been low.
Markets still see roughly two 25 bps cuts by year-end.
7/ BRITAIN
The sometimes surprising Bank of England met market expectations on Thursday, keeping interest rates at 4.25%.
The BoE has been cutting roughly once a quarter for the past year, and markets expect it to continue at that pace, with two more cuts priced in by year end.
Three of the nine rate-setters voted on Thursday for a cut however. Some investors speculate softening labour data could cause the BoE to up the pace of cuts, though others reckon it will be held back by high UK inflation.
8/ AUSTRALIA
Weak growth data and fears commodities producers and miners will take a blow from a U.S.-China trade war means the Reserve Bank of Australia stands ready to deliver rapid rate cuts.
The RBA cut rates by 25 bps to 3.85% in May and traders see borrowing costs dropping to near 3% by year-end.
9/ NORWAY
Norway's central bank cut its policy interest rate by 25 bps to 4.25% on Thursday, its first reduction since 2020, a decision that took most analysts by surprise and weakened the currency.
The Norges Bank has been the most cautious among developed market central banks on rate cuts, and governor Ida Bache said only one or two more reductions were planned this year.
10/ JAPAN
The Bank of Japan, the sole central bank in hiking mode, kept rates steady on Tuesday, as expected by investors.
Escalating Middle East tensions and U.S. tariffs complicate the BOJ's task of raising still-low interest rates and reducing a balance sheet that has ballooned to roughly the size of Japan's economy.
On Tuesday it decided to decelerate the pace of its balance sheet drawdown next year, signalling its preference to move cautiously in removing remnants of its decade-long stimulus.

SINOVAC Board of Directors Prevails Against Advantech/Prime's New York Lawsuit

BEIJING--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jun 20, 2025-- SINOVAC Biotech Ltd. (NASDAQ: SVA) (' SINOVAC ' or the ' Company '), a leading provider of biopharmaceutical products in China, today announced it has prevailed against Advantech/Prime Success' ('Advantech/Prime') Petition for Emergency Injunctive Relief in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. The result in the New York court represents another failure in the campaign by Advantech/Prime in coordination with Vivo Capital (together known as the 'Dissenting Investor Group') to wrest control of SINOVAC from its recently installed, lawfully-elected Board of Directors (the 'current SINOVAC Board') in accordance with the Privy Council order and Antiguan Law, and to interfere with the payment of the US$55.00 per common share special cash dividend declared by the current SINOVAC Board. Following the New York court's ruling, the current SINOVAC Board is free to pursue its legal action in Antigua seeking to cancel the PIPE shares invalidly issued to the Dissenting Investor Group by the former illegitimate board (the 'Imposter Former Board'). If the current SINOVAC Board succeeds in legal proceedings on the PIPE shares, it has announced its intention to redistribute an additional US$11.00 per common share to SINOVAC's valid shareholders. Dr. Chiang Li, Chairman of the SINOVAC Board, commented, 'We will continue our mission to restore fairness and deliver value to all valid SINOVAC shareholders, starting with paying the $55.00 per share special cash dividend as soon as July 7, 2025.' The Dissenting Investor Group's self-serving, multi-pronged lawfare strategy against SINOVAC has one goal: to prevent all valid SINOVAC common shareholders from receiving any dividend payments unless the Dissenting Investor Group receives an allocation for their invalid PIPE shares, despite the fact that they have already received over US$1 billion in dividends from a SINOVAC operating subsidiary. The current SINOVAC Board has set aside in escrow the pro rata portion of dividends for the PIPE shares — funds the Dissenting Investor Group could receive if the legal proceedings they initiated rule in their favor. The current SINOVAC Board is fighting back – and winning. We feel certain that we will prevail against any further legal action by the Dissenting Investor Group and look forward to ensuring all valid shareholders receive their fair share. Your Vote is Important Your vote on or before July 8 will be about the future of SINOVAC, your receipt of your make-whole dividend payments in the near-term, and the long-term value of your investment. We urge you to keep SINOVAC's Board in place and vote on the WHITE proxy card ' AGAINST ' Proposal 1 to remove the current Board and ' AGAINST ' Proposal 2 to appoint the Reconstituted Imposter Board Slate. Your vote is critical to ensuring that SINOVAC remains on the path to stability, growth, and value creation for all shareholders. DISCARD any items you received asking you to vote for the Reconstituted Imposter Former Board Slate. If you have already voted for the Reconstituted Imposter Former Board Slate, you can subsequently revoke it by using the WHITE proxy card or WHITE voting instruction form to vote. Huawei Patents Solid-State Battery That Would Let You Road Trip From Miami To Maine On A Single Charge

Toyota is currently working on solid-state batteries it says will allow it to build 900-mile EVs, but while many would call that overkill, dads across the country know it isn't enough. We need more range if EVs are ever going to be good enough for a proper road trip, and if Huawei can deliver on its latest solid-state battery patent, we may almost be there. That's because it offers more than 1,800 miles of range on a single charge, CarNewsChina reports. For context, that's enough range to drive from Miami, Florida, to Bangor, Maine, without stopping. That said, China's range estimates are even more generous than Europe's, which means you may only get 1,200 or 1,300 miles out of a battery like that in the United States. Pitiful, I know. At that point, there's basically no reason to even bring your external catheter on a road trip. Not that the U.S. would allow Chinese battery tech to be sold here in the first place or invest in catching up. Our EV tech will stay generations behind China's, and we will like it. From the sound of it, the real value in this patent is the battery's energy density: The patent outlines a solid-state battery architecture with energy densities between 400 and 500 Wh/kg, potentially two to three times that of conventional lithium-ion cells. The filing also details a novel approach to improving electrochemical stability: doping sulfide electrolytes with nitrogen to address side reactions at the lithium interface, a long-standing obstacle to the commercialisation of sulfide-based batteries. Huawei's design aims to boost safety and cycle life by mitigating degradation at this critical junction. Read more: These Supercars Lose Value So Quickly, They're Almost A Steal Allegedly, given a big enough charger, Huawei says it could charge the battery in about five minutes, too. That would require an absolutely absurd amount of power, but it isn't like companies in China aren't working on that, too. BYD has already shown off a Megawatt charger that's capable of adding 250 miles of range in about five minutes. Early versions would also likely cost a small fortune, though, and it's also hard to see how practical Megawatt charging would be in the remote areas where people might actually use it. But while BYD does actually plan to build at least some of those Megawatt chargers, don't be surprised if Huawei's 1,800-mile solid-state battery ends up being more of a tech demonstration than anything else. Instead, it seems much more likely that the batteries that will ultimately make their way into production cars will be smaller and therefore lighter. A battery that's a third the size of the 1,800-mile battery would still offer more than enough range for a road trip while also drastically reducing weight. Considering how heavy EV batteries are — the battery in the Hummer EV weighs nearly 3,000 pounds — if there's one thing EVs need, it's less weight. So while Huawei's 1,800-mile battery is still theoretical for now, it's still cool to see battery tech advancing to the point where, in a few years, we may see long-range EVs that weigh about the same as gas-powered cars. At least in other countries outside the U.S., since Republicans have decided they'd rather just turn us into a technological backwater. Want more like this? Does BYD or Tesla stock offer the best value?

Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) and BYD (OTC:BYDD.F) are the two titans of the global electric vehicle (EV) market, but their investment cases diverge sharply when you dig into the numbers and outlook. Here's how they stack up for investors looking ahead. Tesla's forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratios remain stratospheric by any standard. The company is expected to trade at 168.8 times earnings in 2025, falling to 111.4 times in 2026 and 85.7 times in 2027. Even by its own five-year history, these multiples are elevated, and they are more than 10 times the consumer discretionary sector median. BYD, by contrast, looks far more modest. Its forward P/E is 18.4 times for 2025 and 14.2 times for 2026. That's just a fraction of Tesla's and much closer to sector norms. This huge valuation gap reflects the market's belief in Tesla's future growth, but also means any disappointment could hit the shares hard. Tesla's price-to-sales ratio for 2025 is a lofty 10.4 times, while BYD's is just 0.65 times. In other words, investors are paying a huge premium for each dollar of Tesla's sales, while BYD trades closer to traditional automaker multiples. BYD's lower multiple reflects its mass-market positioning and focus on affordability, while Tesla's premium signals expectations for high-margin growth and disruptive new business lines. Tesla boasts a market cap over $1trn, with $37bn in cash and $13bn in debt. This gives it a strong net cash position and plenty of firepower for R&D and expansion. BYD, with a market cap around $147bn, holds $21bn in cash and $5.7bn in debt. Still solid, but on a smaller scale. Tesla's financial muscle gives it flexibility, but BYD's balance sheet is also robust and supports its rapid global expansion. The real battleground is not just EVs, but autonomous driving and robotics. Tesla's valuation is highly detached from automotive peers because investors are betting it will dominate self-driving technology and unlock new business models like robotaxis and AI-powered logistics. Its Dojo supercomputer and Full Self-Driving (FSD) efforts are central to this thesis, though regulatory hurdles remain. BYD is not standing still. Its latest models integrate advanced driver-assist systems, LiDAR, and rapid-charging battery tech. This has already made headlines. However, its approach is more incremental, focusing on affordability, scale, and steady technological improvements. Coupled with the fact that it's Chinese, it hasn't been afforded the same attention by investors. BYD trades at far lower valuation multiples and has recently overtaken Tesla in global EV sales, especially in China and Europe. Meanwhile, Tesla commands a huge premium based on its potential to lead in autonomy and AI-driven transport. However, the execution risk is huge. For value-focused investors, BYD is the obvious choice, but clearly the market favours Tesla and Elon Musk's ambitions.
