
Ballard Reports Q1 2025 Results
VANCOUVER, BC , May 6, 2025 /CNW/ - Ballard Power Systems (NASDAQ: BLDP) (TSX: BLDP) today announced consolidated financial results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2025 . All amounts are in U.S. dollars unless otherwise noted and have been prepared in accordance with International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).
Highlights (comparisons are to Q1 2024):
Revenue of $15.4 million , up 6% YoY, primarily driven by bus market strength; engine shipments up 31%
14 point improvement in gross margins, primarily driven by increased revenue and lower manufacturing overhead costs
22% and 31% reductions in Cash Operating Costs 1 and Total Operating Expenses 2 respectively, primarily driven by restructuring actions initiated in September 2024
Q1 ended with $576.7 million in cash and cash equivalents
"Amidst an uncertain macroeconomic, geopolitical and industry context, we continue to focus on our controllables," stated Randy MacEwen, President and CEO. "Compared to prior year, 2025 Q1 revenue increased 6%, engine shipments were up 31%, gross margin improved by 14 points, and Total Operating Expenses 2 were down 31%."
Mr. MacEwen added, "We are encouraged with the continued growth in the Bus market, which contributed 81% of Q1 revenue, up 41% year-over-year. After securing new order intake of $75.4 million in Q4, we saw soft order intake in Q1. While certain sales opportunities were delayed as the hydrogen and fuel cell industry continues to undergo rationalization and compounded by tariff uncertainties, we expect significant orders over the coming quarters. We ended Q1 with an Order Backlog of $158 million , including a 12-month Orderbook of $92.4 million ."
Mr. MacEwen concluded, "As we look to the remainder of 2025, we will continue to navigate uncertainties related to hydrogen policies and trade tariffs. We will continue to focus on our customers, new order intake, on-time delivery of quality products, gross margin expansion initiatives, and prioritized product development and cost reduction programs. As our Q1 results reflect, we are starting to see the positive financial impact of the corporate restructuring we initiated last year. We continue to assess opportunities for further cost rationalization in 2025. Importantly, we ended Q1 with $576.7 million in cash, and no requirements for near- or mid-term financing. We will maintain disciplined spending and balance sheet strength for long-term sustainability."
Q1 2025 Financial Highlights
(all comparisons are to Q1 2024 unless otherwise noted)
Total revenue was $15.4 million in the quarter, up 6% year-over-year.
Heavy Duty Mobility revenue of $12.9 million , 22% higher year-over-year, driven by bus revenues which grew 41% but were offset with lower revenue from truck, rail, and marine verticals.
Stationary revenue was $0.6 million , (84%) year-over-year, and Emerging and Other Markets revenue was $1.9 million or 757% higher compared to Q1 2024.
Gross margin was (23%) in the quarter, an improvement of 14-points. Negative gross margin has continued to be impacted by relatively low revenue and manufacturing cost absorption. Improvement in gross margin over the prior year was primarily due to lower manufacturing overhead costs from restructuring actions taken in Q3 2024.
Total Operating Expenses 2 were $25.5 million, a decrease of 31%, a result of our reduced global operating cost structure from our 2024 restructuring activities, including reductions of 28%, 32% and 23% in research and product development, general and administrative, and sales and marketing expenses, respectively. Cash Operating Costs 1 were $23 .2 million, a decrease of 22%, also driven by our 2024 restructuring.
Total Cash Used by Operating Activities was $24.4 million , compared to $20.0 million in the prior year. Cash and cash equivalents were $576.7 million at the end of Q1 2025, compared to $720.7 million in the prior year.
Adjusted EBITDA 1 was ($27.5) million , compared to ($36.6) million in Q1 2024. The improvement in Adjusted EBITDA was driven primarily by margin and operating cost improvements, as well as certain changes in mark to market gains on financial assets.
Order Backlog at the end of Q1 2025 was $158.0 million , a decrease of 9% compared to the end of Q4 2024 as a result of delivering more revenue in Q1 than new orders received in Q1.
The 12-month Orderbook was $92.4 million at end-Q1, a decrease of $6.6 million or 7% from the end of Q4 2024.
2025 Outlook
Consistent with our past practice, and in view of the early stage of hydrogen fuel cell market development, specific revenue and net income (loss) guidance for 2025 is not provided. We expect revenue in 2025 will be back-half weighted. Total Operating Expense 2 and Capital Expenditure 3 guidance ranges for 2025 are as noted below. We continue to review and consider various options to reduce our operating cost structure and capital spend, which may result in revisions to our guidance ranges at a future date.

Completion date for Walker Road-Tecumseh Road construction project delayed again
The completion date for a construction project around Tecumseh Road East and Walker Road in Windsor is being pushed back again. The Tecumseh Road East infrastructure renewal project was scheduled to be completed by July but is now scheduled for completion in August due to additional work that's been identified. An ENWIN spokesperson tells AM800 News that while performing road restoration work, it was identified that additional repairs are required in order to ensure the long-term durability of the roadway. This work is being completed now, while traffic controls are already in place, to help avoid future disruptions and is anticipated to reduce the need for further major maintenance or construction in the coming years. Traffic on the west side of Walker Road will be reduced to one lane in each direction, controlled by traffic signals in late June. No left turns will be permitted at the Tecumseh/Walker intersection during this time. Ward 4 Councillor Mark McKenzie calls this latest delay ridiculous, given it was supposed to be done in Fall 2024. 'We heard back in March; they said it would be eight to 12 weeks, which would put it at the end of May. The end of May has come and gone. We were told it would be maybe the beginning or mid-July; now we're hearing it's going to be August,' he said. The current work is the continuation of a project that started in May 2024, and it includes a new 1,200-meter-long concrete water main, along with road paving and surface restoration. Along with the intersection, the work has impacted several surrounding roads, including Memorial Drive, Turner Road, Factoria Road, Milloy Street and Chandler Road, all near the Met Campus of Windsor Regional Hospital. McKenzie says he's hearing from residents every day about this project. 'You have people who are speeding up and down these residential streets now trying to avoid the delays that you're seeing on Walker Road and Tecumseh Road because of this never-ending construction project,' he said. McKenzie says he doesn't understand why this project is taking so long. 'Something needs to be done here; there need to be timelines that are set in these contracts. If these contractors can't hit these timelines, these deadlines, then they should be penalized for it. Carney travels to Europe for security, defence talks with EU, NATO
Prime Minister Mark Carney will depart for Europe on Sunday for back-to-back summits where he is expected to make major commitments for Canada on security and defence. Carney will be joined by Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand, Defence Minister David McGuinty and secretary of state for defence procurement Stephen Fuhr at the EU and NATO summits, where military procurement and diversifying supply chains will top the agendas. The international meetings come as Canada looks to reduce its defence procurement reliance on the United States due to strained relations over tariffs and President Donald Trump's repeated talk about Canada becoming a U.S. state. Carney will fly first to Brussels, Belgium, starting the trip with a visit to the Antwerp Schoonselhof Military Cemetery where 348 Canadian soldiers are buried. He will also meet with Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever, European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. Story continues below advertisement At the EU-Canada summit, Anand and McGuinty are expected to sign a security and defence agreement with the EU in what one European official described Friday as one of the most ambitious deals Europe has ever signed with a third country. The agreement will open the door to Canada's participation in the ReArm Europe initiative, allowing Canada to access a 150-billion-euro loan program for defence procurement, called Security Action for Europe. An EU official briefing reporters on Friday said once the procurement deal is in place, Canada will have to negotiate a bilateral agreement with the European Commission to begin discussions with member states about procurement opportunities. At the NATO summit, Carney will take part in bilateral meetings with other leaders. The summit agenda includes a social dinner hosted by the king and queen of the Netherlands and a two-and-a-half hour meeting of the North Atlantic Council. NATO allies are expected to debate a plan to hike alliance members' defence spending target to five per cent of national GDP. NATO data shows that in 2024, none of its 32 members spent that much. The Canadian government official who briefed reporters on background says the spending target and its timeline are still up for discussion, though some allies have indicated they would prefer a seven-year timeline while others favour a decade. Canada hasn't hit a five- per- cent defence spending threshhold since the 1950s and hasn't reached the two per cent mark since the late 1980s. NATO says that, based on its estimate of which expenditures count toward the target, Canada spent $41 billion in 2024 on defence, or 1.37 per cent of GDP. That's more than twice what it spent in 2014, when the two per cent target was first set; that year, Canada spent $20.1 billion, or 1.01 per cent of GDP, on defence. 'The national security environment has really, really shifted,' Buck said, adding allies next door to Russia face the greatest threats. 'There is a high risk that the U.S. would undercut NATO at a time where all allies are increasingly vulnerable.' Trump has suggested the U.S. might abandon its mutual defence commitment to the alliance if member countries don't ramp up defence spending. Continue » Growing at a double-digit pace As a disruptor to the media industry, Netflix has achieved impressive growth historically. The company launched its streaming service in the U.S. in 2007. And by the end of 2024, it had eclipsed 300 million global subscribers. The business has a presence in more than 190 countries across the globe, highlighting its broad reach. Netflix no longer reports its quarterly subscriber metrics. However, the business continues to grow at a double-digit pace. Revenue was up 12.5% in the firset quarter. Management expects a 15.4% year-over-year jump in the current quarter. It's not a surprise that the U.S. and Canada are Netflix's two most mature markets. Naturally, the business might be close to reaching a saturation point in these countries. But there's still potential to penetrate less-developed international markets, particularly in Asia-Pacific and Latin America. As the middle class in these areas keeps growing while broadband internet access expands, Netflix can capture more customers. The leadership team isn't shying away from testing new waters. For example, Netflix no longer allows accounts that share passwords. What's more, the company finally launched an ad-supported streaming option in November 2022, something management said previously that it wouldn't do. This cheaper subscription tier should drive a doubling of ad revenue in 2025, a clear indication of the strong demand and monetization of the lower-cost plan. And more recently, we've seen Netflix cover live sports. The business has rights to show the National Football League's Christmas Day games through 2026. And it has the U.S. rights for the FIFA Women's World Cup in 2027 and 2031. Investors should be realistic about expectations Netflix has become a dominant enterprise. It has built up durable competitive strengths that make it hard to disrupt and that raise the chances of long-term success. Consider the Netflix brand. It's undoubtedly a leader in the media and entertainment space on a worldwide basis. Netflix is also used interchangeably as a verb, showcasing how much consumer mindshare the brand has. Netflix generated $40 billion in trailing-12-month revenue, and as previously mentioned, it has more than 300 million members. This gives it tremendous scale, allowing the business to invest heavily in content at a pace that its competitors can't match. Consequently, Netflix's scale has resulted in huge profits. The financial forecast calls for a 29% operating margin in 2025, with free cash flow of $8 billion planned as well. With so many wonderful qualities, investors might be inclined to buy shares in the hopes that Netflix can one day make them millionaires. But it's best to keep expectations in check. Netflix is a mature company, so it's likely that the pace of growth will continue to slow in the years ahead. That's a reasonable expectation to have. The valuation also doesn't help the cause. As of June 19, the stock trades at an expensive price-to-earnings ratio of about 58. To be fair, Netflix is an outstanding company, but it no longer has the massive upside it did when it was at an earlier stage of its lifecycle.
