Waves destroy two homes, nine fall into sea in Sandakan

SANDAKAN (June 3): Two stilt houses in Kampung Bokara Jambatan 4 were severely damaged after being struck by strong waves early Tuesday morning.
In the 6am incident, nine residents — six adults and three children — fell into the sea when the kitchen of one house collapsed entirely, while a room in the second house gave way to.
All the victims were rescued without sustaining serious injuries.
Karamunting assemblyman Datuk George Hiew Vun Zin said he was informed of the incident immediately and directed the Karamunting ADUN Task Force Team to rush to the scene. The team, joined by the village chief and the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK), assessed the damage and identified the victims' urgent needs.
'We also provided initial assistance to both families as emergency relief,' Hiew said in a statement on Tuesday.
He added that the state Welfare Department had been contacted to expedite further aid, especially with the Hari Raya Aidiladha celebration approaching.
'We don't want any family to be neglected, especially ahead of the festive season. Any form of assistance that can be delivered quickly will be arranged,' he assured.
Hiew confirmed that both affected families have lodged police reports regarding the incident.
He also urged villagers to stay alert, particularly those living in poorly maintained homes or high-risk areas.

BESUT: The emotional toll from the Gerik bus crash weighs heavily on Nur Ain Najwa Mohd Ilias, 23, who survived the incident that killed 15 of her university mates on June 9. Nur Ain Najwa said she was semi-conscious at the time of the incident as she had fallen asleep after taking medication for a fever. "I regained consciousness only after the bus had overturned. "It was eerily silent, and my left shoulder was in excruciating pain. In my heart I said, 'Ya Allah, if You want to take my life, I am ready,' before losing consciousness again. "The next time I woke up, I was outside the bus, waiting for help." She said she had used part of her headscarf to support her injured arm before a passer-by gave her a piece of cloth. Her mother, Nani Hamid, 49, said Ain hadn't planned to take the bus that night, but decided to return to campus early and bought a ticket from another student. She added that Ain had initially planned to celebrate Hari Raya Aidiladha at her sister's home in Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, but in the end both siblings decided to return to their family home in Kampung Gong Kemuntong.

Pahang Sultan urges swift aid for Temerloh storm victims

TEMERLOH: The Sultan of Pahang Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah has urged the state government to accelerate the disbursement of financial aid to families affected by a storm that damaged over 200 homes here last weekend. The Sultan said only RM300 from the District Disaster Fund (TMD) had been distributed so far, with a remaining RM700 still pending. 'I hope this can be channelled soon. The RM5,000 repair assistance should also be expedited,' he said after visiting and extending aid to the affected residents today. The assistance was also delivered by Tengku Panglima Raja Brig Jen Tengku Amir Nasser Ibrahim Shah and Tengku Arif Bendahara Tengku Muhammad Iskandar Ri'ayatuddin Shah. Al-Sultan Abdullah also expressed sympathy to those affected, noting that the disaster struck just three days after Hari Raya Aidiladha. 'It is painful not to be able to celebrate Aidiladha properly, but this is Allah's will. Every hardship has its wisdom and we must remain patient,' he said. The storm damaged 210 homes across four mukims namely Perak 2, Bangau, Mentakab 1 and Mentakab 2. The Sultan also extended condolences to the families of two teenage girls killed in a road accident in Temerloh on June 11. In a separate remark, the Sultan warned against following teachings that have been declared deviant by the Pahang Mufti Department, particularly the Ahmadiah sect. 'Why are there still people trying to spread this? We must hold firm to the teachings of Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaah. This is what we've inherited from our elders and what the majority of Malaysians believe in,' he said.
