ULM Drops Women's Tennis Amid Athletic Department Financial Constraints
The women's tennis program at Louisiana-Monroe has been disbanded because of financial constraints at the university's athletic department. Athletics Director John Hartwell announced this week that the decision stemmed from increased operational and infrastructure costs and will help ULM athletics to continue progress toward balancing its budget while maintaining an NCAA-required minimum of 16 NCAA Division I sports.
The move comes after NCAA rule changes, which take effect this fall, eliminated scholarship limits on specific sports. The scholarship caps are replaced with roster limits, and schools now may fund scholarships for every roster spot–as long as they maintain equal scholarship opportunities for men and women as required under Title IX. As women's tennis athletes graduate or transfer from ULM, scholarship funds that had been dedicated to them will be redirected to other remaining women's sports teams at the university, Hartwell's announcement said. While the number of women's athletic scholarships funded by ULM won't change, its athletic department will save on all other expenses–from coaches' salaries to travel, equipment, and facility costs–associated with the tennis program. The university did not offer specific estimates on what those savings might be.
'Discontinuing a sport is never an easy decision, nor one that we take lightly,' Hartwell said. 'We know this is tough for our student-athletes and our coaches who have poured so much into our tennis program.'
Hartwell said ULM will honor the scholarships of those who want to complete their degrees without transferring elsewhere. He said his administration also will help those tennis players who want to continue to compete to pursue opportunities at other schools.
'We will prioritize as smooth a transition as possible for our student-athletes,' Hartwell said.

Semi-retired Lexi Thompson shot a 2-under 70 in the second round of the KPMG Women's PGA Championship on Friday to put herself in position to contend over the weekend for her first major title in more than a decade. Her only major victory was at the Kraft Nabisco Championship in 2014, though her 13 top-five finishes in majors since 2013 is the most by any player. Thompson missed the cut at the US Women's Open three weeks ago, but last week was in contention in the final round before tying for fourth at the Meijer LPGA Classic. Her shots to save par Friday were maybe more important than the three birdies – the longest an 11-footer, with a 6½-footer and nearly 4-footer as well. Thompson was only 70 yards from the pin after her tee shot at the 10th, but hit her approach into the bunker and was still 43 feet away after knocking it out of there before a curling right-to-left putt. At the par-5 14th, her 5-foot putt did a 360-degree roll around the lip before falling into the cup. When her approach at No. 18 landed in a bunker right of the flag, Thompson looked upward and then blasted 15 feet past the hole, unable to save par one last time. Only 15 of 156 players broke par Thursday. Thompson had one of the 10 under-par rounds in the early wave of 77 players Friday, the best being Charley Hull's 69 after opening with a 78.

Benfica knock out Auckland in Club World Cup romp
ORLANDO: Benfica romped to a 6-0 win over Auckland City on Friday in a Club World Cup match in Orlando which suffered a long weather delay, with Angel Di Maria netting two penalties. With the Portuguese side leading by a goal at half-time the match was suspended because of a storm, eventually resuming two hours later. Auckland of New Zealand, the only Oceania Football Confederation representatives at the tournament, were thrashed 10-0 by Bayern Munich in their Group C opener and this defeat means they are eliminated. Despite their eventual collapse, Auckland battled hard in the first half and almost made it to the break unscathed. Auckland goalkeeper Nathan Garrow made several good saves to keep Benfica at bay and the Portuguese side grew frustrated. Benfica took the lead deep into first half stoppage time when Gianluca Prestianni was clumsily felled in the area by Haris Zeb. Di Maria, who converted a spot-kick in the opening 2-2 draw against Boca Juniors, sent Garrow the wrong way. At half-time the match became the fourth in the last four days at the tournament to be impacted by a suspension for adverse conditions, with a storm arriving at the Inter&CO Stadium. When play eventually resumed, Benfica came back out strongly. Vangelis Pavlidis bundled his way through and smashed home to double Bruno Lage's team's lead in the 53rd minute, with Renato Sanches netting the third 10 minutes later from outside the box with a deflected effort. Luxembourg midfielder Leandro Barreiro bagged a brace to expand Benfica's lead, tucking home at the back post from Pavlidis' cross for the fourth before netting from close range. Michael Waltrip Joins Ownership Group of AF1's Nashville Kats
Two-time Daytona 500 winner Michael Waltrip has joined the ownership group of the Nashville Kats, a founding franchise of the Arena Football 1 league. The Kats announced Waltrip joining the group Friday, along with his craft beer company, Michael Waltrip Brewing. The ownership group already includes former NFL coach Jon Gruden, with Jeff Fisher, a former coach of the Los Angeles Rams and Tennessee Titans, majority owner. 'We now have three living legends attached to the Nashville Kats – Jeff Fisher, Jon Gruden and Michael Waltrip – all with the ultimate goal to win championships and raise the AF1 to its ultimate potential along with any team associated with the AF1,' said Bobby DeVoursney, the Kats' CEO and managing partner. Waltrip's brewery is now the team's official craft beer. The team also plans a Waltrip Winners Circle fan zone for the upcoming season. The Kats play the Southwest Kansas Storm on Sunday in Clarksville in the AF1 semifinals.
