Adobe launches standalone app for generating AI videos, images

The new app offers capabilities such as generative fill, generative expand, text to image, text to video, and image to video. — Bloomberg Adobe Inc on Tuesday released a standalone Firefly mobile application for Android and iOS in an attempt to put a larger spotlight on its artificial intelligence-powered image generation and editing tools. The new app offers capabilities such as generative fill, generative expand, text to image, text to video, and image to video. The generative fill tool makes it easy to remove distracting elements of a photo – or add something to the image that wasn't originally present. Generative expand uses AI to stretch a photo to better fit various aspect ratios, which can be useful for social media posts. The text-based creation flow resembles similar offerings from OpenAI Inc, Alphabet Inc's Google, and Meta Platforms Inc Generated videos are five seconds in length. These functions have long been woven into Adobe's creative software suite that includes Photoshop and Lightroom, but a dedicated Firefly app puts them front and center and lets consumers experiment with the AI tools through a more streamlined interface. For Adobe, it's a more focused showcase of what the company's latest AI models are capable of. Adobe's models are used by default, but creators can opt to use models from OpenAI or Google for text-to-image, text-to-video and image-to-video projects. The Firefly app is free to download but Adobe requires credits for generating content. Those without an Adobe Creative Cloud subscription can sign up for a new US$4.99-per-month plan for additional credits and to unlock the app's "premium' features, an Adobe spokesperson told Bloomberg News. Content generated with the Firefly app is synced to a user's Creative Cloud account, allowing editing to be continued on a computer. – Bloomberg

Adobe brings AI-image generation app to phones, adds partners

FILE PHOTO: A logo of Adobe Inc. is pictured at the company's office in Citywest Business Campus, Saggart, Ireland October 19, 2021. Picture taken October 19, 2021. REUTERS/ Tom Bergin/File Photo SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) -Adobe Inc. released its first dedicated artificial intelligence smartphone app on Tuesday that includes AI models from the company and partner firms, in a bid to tap into a growing trend of sharing AI images and videos over social media. The new app, called Firefly, packages Adobe's own AI model together with models from new partner firms Ideogram, Luma AI, Pika and Runway, and is available on iOS and Android phones. Previously, the service was available only as a web version, that used models from Alphabet's GOOGL.O> Google and OpenAI in addition to Adobe's model. Those models will also be available in the app, Adobe said. Generating images that can easily be shared on social media has become a key driver of AI interest, with OpenAI's Ghibli-style AI images driving record traffic to the ChatGPT creator. Adobe's mobile service will offer subscribers unlimited basic image generation from Adobe models, while it will charge extra for access to the company's premium models and those from its partners. The subscription cost will be the same as for the web versions of Firefly, which start at $10 per month. The San Jose, California-based company had earlier released AI tools along with the mobile app version of its popular image-editing program Photoshop. Adobe has not disclosed how much it pays the partner models on the Firefly app. The company had promised users that its AI model is trained only on material that it has a legal right to use, with Adobe offering protection against copyright claims. Ely Greenfield, Adobe's chief technology officer for digital media, said Adobe's approach has also gained some resonance among consumers. "Even for many of our individual customers, that promise of the commercial safety and the story about how Firefly is trained continues to be a really important differentiator," Greenfield said. Asian currencies weaken on Middle East tensions; rate decisions in focus

Emerging Asian currencies weakened on Tuesday against a largely steady dollar, as conflict in the Middle East kept investors on edge, while focus was also on central bank rate decisions this week. Broader risk-off sentiment gripped markets after U.S. President Donald Trump called for the evacuation of Tehran. A separate report said Trump has asked for the National Security Council to be prepared in the situation room as he cut short his visit to the Group of Seven summit in Canada. The Israeli shekel edged down 0.2% after rising 3.5% on Monday. In Asia, the Thai baht and the Philippine peso both weakened 0.4%. Oil prices rose, with analysts suggesting geopolitical uncertainty would keep prices elevated. Analysts at Barclays see risks for most Asian currencies in the near term especially if oil prices move even higher. "TWD and THB are most at risk, followed by KRW, as these currencies tend to weaken the most in Asia in the wake of oil supply shocks," they said in a note. Regional equities were largely mixed. Stocks in Taiwan and Indonesia rose 0.7% and 0.6%, respectively, while those in India and Malaysia fell 0.4% each. Some Asian equities mirrored overnight Wall Street gains, partly due to relief that the developments in the Middle East over the weekend did not escalate as much as initially feared but investors are still cautious, said Khoon Goh, ANZ's head of Asia research. South Korean stocks pared gains and were last up 0.1%, after rising as much as 1.8% earlier in the session. Seoul's top negotiator said that the country's trade negotiations with the U.S. are expected to proceed in an intense manner in the next few weeks. Investors' focus is also on central bank meetings this week. Bank Indonesia will announce its decision just hours before the U.S. Federal Reserve on Wednesday and is expected to hold its interest rate steady, likely prioritising the stability of the rupiah. The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) is widely expected to cut its key policy rate by 25 basis points on Thursday. Against the consensus, Barclays analysts expect the BSP to stay on hold and cut rates in August and in the fourth quarter. "If oil prices remain elevated, we think the BSP may turn more cautious in terms of easing, suggesting rate cuts will become more backloaded," they said. Meanwhile, Taiwan's central bank is likely to maintain status quo when it meets on Thursday.
