Deputy Chief Paul Junger ‘officially separated' from Tacoma PD

Tacoma police confirmed today that Deputy Chief Paul Junger is no longer on the job.
It's the first big move we've heard from the new chief, Patti Jackson Era.
Junger was briefly put on leave for an investigation last fall but was allowed back on the job.
Tacoma police say he was fired as part of an Equal Employment Opportunity investigation conducted by an external agency.
Chief Jackson sent an internal email today, saying, in part: 'Today, Deputy Chief Paul Junger was officially separated from the Tacoma Police Department. The Department remains fully operational, and our command staff is focused on ensuring a smooth transition. While changes like this can bring uncertainty, we are committed to maintaining stability and moving the agency forward — stronger and more unified.'
So far, there is no word on who will replace him as deputy chief.

The Department of Justice has filed a civil forfeiture complaint to seize $225.3 million for victims involved in cryptocurrency scams. The complaint, filed Wednesday, alleges that the cryptocurrency addresses that held over $225.3 million were part of a sophisticated blockchain-based money laundering network. 'Civil forfeiture complaint is the latest action taken by the Department to protect the American public from fraudsters specializing in cryptocurrency-based scams, and it will not be the last,' said Matthew R. Galeotti, Head of the Justice Department's Criminal Division. 'These schemes harm American victims, costing them billions of dollars every year, and undermine faith in the cryptocurrency ecosystem. Our investigators and prosecutors are relentlessly pursuing these scammers and their ill-gotten gains, and we will relentlessly pursue recovery of victim funds.' Last week, the DOJ found five men guilty who laundered over $36 million from victims. They operated out of Cambodia and faced maximum penalties of between five and 20 years in prison. Assistant Director of the FBI Criminal Division Jose A. Perez said his agency will not allow the criminals targeting unsuspecting victims who believe they are making legitimate investments to keep these scams going. 'This seizure of $225.3 million in funds linked to cryptocurrency investment scams marks the largest cryptocurrency seizure in U.S. Secret Service history, said Shawn Bradstreet, a special agent in that agency's San Francisco field office. In this investigation, more than 400 suspected victims say they lost money after believing that they were making investments, officials said. According to the FBI internet Crime Complaint Center's 2024 internet Crime Report, cryptocurrency investment fraud resulted in more than $5.8 billion lost in 2024. 1 boy shot outside Lincoln High School in Tacoma. No arrests made, police say

Update: Tacoma Police Department spokesperson Sgt. John Correa told The News Tribune at the scene that police received multiple calls around 2:49 p.m. reporting shots heard outside Lincoln High School. More calls came in from a nearby business after a boy showed up with a gunshot wound. 'What started the argument, what started the shots, we don't know at this time,' Correa said. 'We're still investigating it.' The victim has been hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Correa. Police have the scene spanning South 37th Street and South G Street closed for forensic processing and there is some traffic congestion in the area, he said. A collision down the road involved four cars, including a police vehicle enroute to the scene of the shooting and a school bus with no students onboard, according to Correa. Initial post: One boy was shot outside of Lincoln High School in Tacoma Tuesday afternoon. The shooting took place just before school ended in the 700 block of South 37th Street. The boy sustained a gunshot wound, and the status of his injuries was not immediately known, Tacoma Police Department spokesperson Sgt. John Correa told The News Tribune. Correa said it was not immediately known if the injured boy is a student at the school. The alleged shooter has not been arrested, Correa said. The cause for the shooting is being investigated. The school went into a modified lockdown as a precaution after 911 was called for the shooting. That restricted access in and out of the building, according to Tacoma Public Schools chief communications officer Tanisha Jumper in a statement. 'As this is an active investigation we have no other statement at this time. Counselor will be on site tomorrow to provide support to students and staff,' she said. While responding to the shooting, a police sergeant was involved in a crash with other cars. Correa said he 'is fine and OK' as well as the other people involved in the crash. Correa said he could not confirm how many other cars were involved in the crash. Two people were transported to a local hospital by Tacoma Fire personnel, a department spokesperson told the News Tribune. Man arrested on suspicion of defacing S.F.'s iconic Pink Triangle installation

San Francisco police said that officers arrested a 19-year-old on suspicion of defacing the Pink Triangle memorial art installation on Twin Peaks on Tuesday. Officers said they responded to the unit block of Christmas Tree Point just before 12:30 p.m., where they observed a man 'actively defacing' the installation. After the suspect ran, police pursued him on foot and detained him, officials said. Officers arrested Lester Bamacajeronimo of San Francisco in the incident. Officials said they seized evidence of vandalism tools. Charges against the suspect are pending, officials said. 'This vandalism is unacceptable in our city and the San Francisco Police department condemns this act,' spokespersons said. 'San Francisco's Pink Triangle is a powerful tool of our city's commitment to supporting LGBT rights and commemorates to (sic) victims of the past.' The installation of the city's famous Pink Triangle is one of the many events that mark the beginning of San Francisco's Pride month. Hundreds of volunteers show up each year to help setup the triangle, which makes up nearly an acre in size and this year, was made up of 175 pink tarps. The San Francisco tradition, which began as a renegade crafts project, was established in 1995, according to a historical website for the Pink Triangle. The symbol of the pink triangle is a reclaiming of the pink triangle patch that gay men were forced to wear in Nazi Germany's concentration camps alongside Jews, Roma, political dissidents and other 'undesirables.' Even after the Allies defeated the Nazis and freed many concentration camp survivors, those marked with pink triangles were imprisoned under a law barring homosexuality. Germany did not recognize gay men as victims of the Nazi regime and worthy of compensation until 2002, the Pink Triangle founder, Patrick Carney, told the Chronicle earlier this year.
