Fast forward 12 years and Canelo once again faces another undefeated American in Las Vegas - this time Crawford.
The mega-fight - streamed on Netflix on September 13 - has drawn comparisons between Canelo's fight with Mayweather over a decade ago.
But he said: "I think Crawford is better than Mayweather because he turns his guard to both sides, he's more intelligent.
"I think he's better than Floyd Mayweather. That's what I think."

Canelo bounced back from defeat to Mayweather - who retired at 50-0 in 2017 - to carve out a Hall of Fame career.
But the harrowing points loss is not the the only reason four-division champion Canelo improved so vastly.
He said: "I learned in every single fight not just in the Mayweather fight but I learned everything and for every fight.
"I'm gonna put all my experience there because I'm gonna need it."

Paul has since deleted the post - but his comments appear to imply that the American believes the super-middleweight king suffers from plantar fasciitis. Plantar fasciitis is a condition that causes pain on the bottom of your foot, around your heel and arch. Symptoms of the condition include pain and stiffness in the heel and arch of the foot, often worse in the morning or after periods of rest, pain that gradually improves with activity but worsens with prolonged standing or walking or stiffness in the foot, especially upon waking or after sitting for a while. People who suffer from plantar fasciitis are advised to get plenty of rest and reduce activities that aggravate the pain, apply ice packs to the affected area to reduce inflammation and regular stretching of the calf muscles and plantar fascia can help relieve symptoms. Paul and Alvarez have traded barbs over the last few months. The 'Problem Child' slammed the Mexican after the four-weight world champion signed a four-fight deal with Riyadh Season instead of facing the YouTuber. The two parties had been in talks to fight in May before the deal collapsed. Paul was quick to hit out at Alvarez, claiming that a contract for the clash was signed by the two parties. "We had a signed contract to fight," Paul said in a video posted on social media. "Here you can see Canelo's signature and my signature to the right. Claiming he's not fighting YouTubers. Bulls***... Claiming he's fighting real fighters, but he's fighting [Terence] Crawford, a 135-pound fighter, and running from a real fighter like David Benavidez. You b****." Take Chelsea 's game against Los Angeles FC on Monday in Atlanta, when there were so many gaps in the stands you could have played a five-a-side game as 50,000 tickets went unsold. FIFA's latest month-long, out-of-season, vanity exercise comprises hopeless mismatches between minnows and giants and slow-paced bore-a-thons in the searing heat. Which leaves European players wishing their knackered bodies and minds were recovering on a beach after a gruelling nine-month season before training starts for another one next month. Like the recent equally pointless and anaemic England games, the only reason footballers and fans are being denied a vital summer break from the sport is that those in charge of it are hopelessly consumed with greed. Spy a blank date in the calendar and a rich, relatively-untapped market like the USA, and they will pull out all the stops to squeeze more sweat from the players and money from the audiences. And, sadly, it's only going to get worse. When US tycoon Todd Boehly bought Chelsea for £4billion in 2022, he told a private equity conference: 'The global footprint of soccer is really underdeveloped' and needs 'an American mentality' to fully realise its financial possibilities. Boehly is just another Yank moneyman who sussed that the earning potential of American football had been maxed out and the hugely-popular English Premier League was the certain route to unlocking sport's global riches. Next season 11 Premier League clubs will be run by Americans, and when it reaches 14, which it soon will, they will run the show as that is the number required to rewrite the rules. I wouldn't bet against the two top teams in the league eventually being forced into a Superbowl -style finale, with cheerleaders, Taylor Swift, tailgate parties and adverts popping up during stoppages where sponsors announce 'this substitution break is brought to you by StayHard erectile dysfunction pills'. And any complaint from the paying fans whose life revolves around following their team, will not register. They will simply be told that the Premier League is now a US-owned, blue-chip, global brand like McDonald's or Disney and, like Coca-Cola, you old school, legacy dudes will just have to suck it up.
