Bengaluru MP urges Centre to intervene in Railway infrastructure delays
BENGALURU: Bengaluru Central MP P C Mohan has urged Minister of State for Jal Shakti and Railways, V Somanna, to intervene in several critical railway infrastructure issues affecting Bengaluru. During a preliminary review meeting on the Bengaluru Suburban Rail Project (BSRP) held on Saturday, Mohan highlighted that delays by civic bodies and a lack of inter-agency coordination continue to hamper progress.
One of the major concerns raised was the stalled Carmelaram Road Over Bridge (ROB), which remains just 35% complete due to delays in land acquisition by BBMP. The incomplete project has led to the closure of the Carmelaram–Gunjur Road, causing severe inconvenience.
Mohan also pointed to the underutilisation of the Panathur Road Underbridge (RUB), which, remains non-operational due to pending approach road. He proposed introducing a new superfast train between Bengaluru and Mumbai, noting that existing options like the Udyan Express take over 21 hours.

‘Land acquisition issues, pending bills': Bengaluru's ‘Stonehenge' Ejipura flyover unlikely to be completed this year
Written by Bhoomika Roy Banerjee Taunted as 'Bangalore Stonehenge' and 'monument' on Google Maps, work for the Ejipura flyover in the city does not appear to be headed for completion anytime soon. With uncleared bills, land acquisition issues, and just 50 per cent of the construction complete over eight years, the flyover has been creating more troubles instead of easing congestion in the area. Meant to connect Kendriya Sadan in Koramangala to the inner Ring Road at Ejipura Junction, the flyover stretches across 2.5 km. Its construction was approved in 2014 and a tender was awarded in 2017 with a 30-month deadline. The project was supposed to be completed in November 2019 but the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) extended the deadline to December 2020 and imposed a penalty for delay. Despite protests from residents and elected representatives, nothing changed. However, after the Karnataka Congress government came into power, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar said in August 2023 that an additional Rs 141 crore was required for the project and assured to solve the problem soon. 'It is really unfortunate that the project has been delayed. I will ensure that it is completed,' he said then. Last month, Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy said that around 50 per cent of the flyover's work was complete and the rest was underway. 'Initially, there was no need for land acquisition, but the BBMP still went ahead and notified 32 properties. Issues related to one property and the St John's (hospital) property are likely to be resolved in the coming days,' he said, adding that pending bills for the completed works will also be cleared soon. 'In view of the monsoon, I have instructed officials to lay an additional layer of asphalt under the flyover to ensure smooth traffic movement. We expect 90–95 per cent of the work to be completed by December,' he said. However, an official associated with the project said they are yet to iron out land acquisition issues. 'A portion of land close to St John's Hospital is yet to be acquired. A meeting has to be held with the stakeholders,' the official told The Indian Express. As of now, 416 segments out of the planned 762 have been cast, and 291 segments have been erected, according to the BBMP. On the ground, commuters and shopkeepers remain frustrated. While construction is going on, its pace is slow. Mohan Kumar, a traffic police constable stationed at the site, says, 'Peak traffic hours are from 8 am to 11.30 am and from 4.30 pm to 9 pm. It is always congested, and when it rains it becomes worse.' Muthu, an employee at TVS which is located near the construction site, said part of the flyover now passes in front of his shop, which is a sign of recent progress but beyond that point, there are 'just bare pillars.' Alim Pasha, manager of the long-standing Sapphire Gift shop in the area, said the situation has affected business, especially for smaller shops. 'Business has been bad, and people barely come. The store is mostly empty. Even if they come, it is mostly during the afternoon when the traffic is moderate. Close investigations swiftly, speed up refunds: finance minister tells tax officials
New Delhi: Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday directed senior officials of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) to close investigations swiftly, speed up tax refunds, and make goods and services tax (GST) registration easier. At a meeting in the capital, Sitharaman also asked the officials to resolve grievances of businesses promptly while maintaining focus on tackling tax evasion and wrongful tax credit claims. The minister reviewed the performance of Central GST and customs authorities and asked the principal chief commissioners, chief commissioners, and director generals of CBIC to enhance performance, fill vacant posts, and enhance administrative efficiency. Officials informed the minister that ₹ 2.23 trillion worth of GST evasion has been detected as of 2024-25, with voluntary payments totaling ₹ 28,909 crore. Sitharaman was engaging with the top brass of the Central government's indirect tax administration to ensure that ease of doing business and ease of tax compliance remain the guiding principle for the tax administration while also ensuring compliance. Reforms, reducing paper work for businesses, and de-regulation are top priorities for the Central government as it seeks to unlock India's unrealised economic potential. Sitharaman's budget speech on 1 February was centred around the reforms needed across sectors. The minister's address to tax officials has set a clear tone—that efficiency, accountability, and taxpayer-centricity must drive indirect tax administration, said Rajat Mohan, senior partner at chartered accountancy firm AMRG and Associates. 'The sharp rise in GST audit coverage to 88.74% and the 94.3% return-filing compliance reflects a matured compliance ecosystem. However, the vast gap between ₹ 2.23 trillion in tax evasion detected and the ₹ 28,909 crore recovered demands immediate focus on enforcement efficiency,' said Mohan. CBIC officials informed Sitharaman during Friday's meeting that the average time for resolving grievances had been reduced to nine days from the stipulated 21-day timeline, and that 95-97% of appeals are disposed of within a month. This track record has placed CBIC among the top five out of 90 Central ministries in the Centralized Public Grievance Redress and Monitoring System rankings since February 2024. The officials also told the minister the national average for monthly GST return filing stood above 94% in FY25, and that 85% of tax refund claims are processed within the statutory 60-day limit. GST audit coverage rose from 62.21% in FY23 to 88.74% in FY25. Sitharaman directed the officials to improve in performance parameters such as GST registration, processing of refunds, and handling taxpayers' grievances. 'Simplifying GST registration, clarifying documentation for principal place of business, and mandating helpdesks are much-needed reforms that will ease on-ground hurdles for taxpayers,' said Mohan of AMRG and Associates. Amit Maheshwari, tax partner at AKM Global, a tax and consulting firm, said GST audit coverage has improved significantly, with zero repeat audits in three years—a move that ensures fairness without burdening taxpayers. Sitharaman also urged customs authorities to reduce the dwell time of consignments at seaports, airports, and inland container depots for both imports and exports, and emphasised that faster cargo clearance is crucial to enhance India's global trade competitiveness and ease of doing business. The minister also directed that disciplinary proceedings against officials at different levels be concluded expeditiously.

‘Finish Yelahanka flyover work by December-end': BBMP Chief
BENGALURU: BBMP Chief Commissioner Maheshwar Rao has directed officials to complete the flyover work on Doddaballapur Main Road in Yelahanka by December. Speaking during inspection near Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan Main Road in the Yelahanka zone, he said that the 2-km flyover work is 60 per cent complete and officials have been told to complete the remaining work by December-end. Rao also inspected footpath of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan Main Road and noticed that the footpath had collapsed in some places. He instructed the officials to immediately carry out repairs including installing kerb stones. Iron rods installed by BESCOM to the transformer on the footpath are too low, which will cause difficulty for the public to walk on the footpath, he said, instructing BESCOM officials concerned to immediately fix it. On the 16th B-Cross Road in Yelahanka's surroundings, he noticed that some shop owners had thrown waste on the footpath and told the marshals to fine the shop owners. He also instructed them to instruct them not to throw waste on the roadside or in empty spaces. He directed officials to immediately install slabs, which were not installed for the 15-metre footpath at Chikkabommasandra Cross. Noticing a building being constructed on the 1st Main Road in A-Sector of Yelahanka in violation of the plan, Rao instructed the officials to immediately issue a notice under the Municipal Corporation Act 2020 and remove parts of the building constructed in violation of the plan. He also instructed the officials to take action against the buildings constructed in violation of the plan within the Yelahanka zone. It is essential to carry out annual maintenance of the newly constructed watch tower, cycle track, car tower, Kannada Akshara Mala and other decorative lights in Yelahanka, he said and instructed the officials to submit a proposal for the grant required for their annual maintenance.
