‘Land acquisition issues, pending bills': Bengaluru's ‘Stonehenge' Ejipura flyover unlikely to be completed this year

Taunted as 'Bangalore Stonehenge' and 'monument' on Google Maps, work for the Ejipura flyover in the city does not appear to be headed for completion anytime soon. With uncleared bills, land acquisition issues, and just 50 per cent of the construction complete over eight years, the flyover has been creating more troubles instead of easing congestion in the area.
Meant to connect Kendriya Sadan in Koramangala to the inner Ring Road at Ejipura Junction, the flyover stretches across 2.5 km. Its construction was approved in 2014 and a tender was awarded in 2017 with a 30-month deadline. The project was supposed to be completed in November 2019 but the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) extended the deadline to December 2020 and imposed a penalty for delay. Despite protests from residents and elected representatives, nothing changed.
However, after the Karnataka Congress government came into power, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar said in August 2023 that an additional Rs 141 crore was required for the project and assured to solve the problem soon. 'It is really unfortunate that the project has been delayed. I will ensure that it is completed,' he said then.
Last month, Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy said that around 50 per cent of the flyover's work was complete and the rest was underway. 'Initially, there was no need for land acquisition, but the BBMP still went ahead and notified 32 properties. Issues related to one property and the St John's (hospital) property are likely to be resolved in the coming days,' he said, adding that pending bills for the completed works will also be cleared soon.
'In view of the monsoon, I have instructed officials to lay an additional layer of asphalt under the flyover to ensure smooth traffic movement. We expect 90–95 per cent of the work to be completed by December,' he said.
However, an official associated with the project said they are yet to iron out land acquisition issues. 'A portion of land close to St John's Hospital is yet to be acquired. A meeting has to be held with the stakeholders,' the official told The Indian Express.
As of now, 416 segments out of the planned 762 have been cast, and 291 segments have been erected, according to the BBMP.
On the ground, commuters and shopkeepers remain frustrated. While construction is going on, its pace is slow. Mohan Kumar, a traffic police constable stationed at the site, says, 'Peak traffic hours are from 8 am to 11.30 am and from 4.30 pm to 9 pm. It is always congested, and when it rains it becomes worse.'
Muthu, an employee at TVS which is located near the construction site, said part of the flyover now passes in front of his shop, which is a sign of recent progress but beyond that point, there are 'just bare pillars.'
Alim Pasha, manager of the long-standing Sapphire Gift shop in the area, said the situation has affected business, especially for smaller shops. 'Business has been bad, and people barely come. The store is mostly empty. Even if they come, it is mostly during the afternoon when the traffic is moderate. When it rains, the place in front of the shop gets clogged, so there is hardly any access. This flyover is a tragedy,' he said.

Patna (Bihar) [India], June 22 (ANI): Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav has said that the coming Bihar assembly will be an 'election for change' and accused the BJP and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar of doing little for Bihar in their rule, saying the state continues to face several challenges including poverty and unemployment. He attacked Nitish Kumar and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying the ruling alliance should spell out one development indicator in which Bihar is number one in the country. Tejashwi Yadav said that RJD and other allies of Mahagathbandhan are ready for the assembly polls later this year. 'We were ready last time also, this election is going to be election of change,' he said, adding that they lost the previous assembly polls by a narrow vote margin. The former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister claimed that as per NCRB data, crime incidents have increased since 2005 in the state. Targeting PM Modi, he said the Prime Minister promises to make every election-bound state 'number one state' in the country. 'Don't know which state will be number two, three...', he said. 'People gave Nitish Kumar 20 years to serve the state and PM Modi has been Prime Minister for 11 years. They have done nothing for Bihar. He also made light of announcements in the union budget for Bihar, saying old schemes have been announced and can't be counted as special package. The RJD leader said that Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh is a MP from Bihar but when textile parks (PM Mega Integrated Textile Region and Apparel - PM MITRA) were announced, there was none for the state. 'Out of nine parks, none have been allocated to Bihar. There are so many union ministers from Bihar...,' he said. Asked about a whole list of development works cited by BJP and JD-U leaders and their assertions that migration has decreased, the number of schools increased, and paper leaks have stopped, Tejashwi Yadav asked if there was any exam without paper leak except for the period when he was Deputy Chief Minister in the coalition government. 'During the 17 months, five lakh posts were filled. They say school building has been constructed, but where are the teachers? Bihar is struggling with hunger, poverty, and hopelessness. Union Minister Nityanand Rai slams Tejashwi Yadav for criticising Centre's development projects in Bihar
Hajipur (Bihar) [India], June 22 (ANI): Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai on Sunday hit back at Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav over his criticism of the development works in the state under the central government. Responding to Yadav's recent comments targeting the Centre, Rai said the BJP is ready to explain the significant progress Bihar has made, both through the central government's vision and the efforts of the state administration. 'We will explain Bihar's development journey to him and tell him how much development has taken place here due to the contribution of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the efforts of the Bihar government,' Rai said. He added, 'Even if he does not give time within a month, we will go to explain to him after a month, and we will sit with him.' Earlier on Saturday, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav alleged the BJP has taken control of the Janata Dal (United), claiming that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will not retain his post after the upcoming Bihar Assembly elections. This will help one crore nine lakh sixty nine thousand and two hundred and fifty five beneficiaries a lot. "People want to know how CM will respond," says BJP's Basavaraja Bommai on HK Patil's letter on illegal mining cases
Gadag (Karnataka) [India], June 22 (ANI): Former Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Sunday said that the question of the people is how Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will respond to Law Minister HK Patil's letter, in which he expressed dissatisfaction over the government's handling of illegal mining cases. Bommai said that 90 per cent of illegal mining cases in the state remain unresolved, pointing to concerns raised by Law Minister HK Patil. Speaking to the media after inaugurating the tile and granite showroom, Bommai said, 'HK Patil has brought out the most important point that 90 per cent of the cases registered in the mine are not settled. They (Congress) are still in power... The question of the people of the state is how the chief minister will respond to the case raised by his own cabinet members...' Regarding the Congress MLA BR Patil's statement, he said, '... It is very clear that there is no respect in Congress for those who speak against corruption...' Meanwhile, explaining the Karnataka government's Yettinahole project, state Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said that the government has decided to deliver the Yettinahole water to Kolar by 2027. He mentioned that the forest department has discussed the project's issues. Land acquisition and financial issues related to the construction of a balanced reservoir in Bairagonda, Lakkenahalli, were also discussed in the meeting with the forest department. DK Shivakumar informed that the changes in the project will take place based on the suggestions of the ministers and asserted that he would study everything and raise the issue in the upcoming cabinet meeting. 'Our government's resolve is to deliver Yettinahole water to Kolar by 2027. We have already discussed the issues related to this project with the Forest Department, the land acquisition process, land acquisition and financial issues related to the construction of a balanced reservoir in Bairagonda, Lakkenahalli. Therefore, we visited the site of these works and inspected them. The changes in this project have been made based on the suggestions of the ministers. There are also some technical aspects here. I will study everything and raise this issue in the next cabinet meeting. I am not worried even if other projects are delayed, the CM has directed me to complete the Yettinahole project on priority', DK Shivakumar told reporters on Saturday. (ANI)
