SAPS Anti-gang unit attacked in Westbury
While patrolling the area of Westbury, members of the Anti-Gang Unit came under attack and had to run for cover. The National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, General Fannie Masemola, has condemned the ambush on the AGU.
'The Anti-Gang Unit is a unit in the SAPS that is responsible for combatting gangs and gang related crime,' said national SAPS spokesperson, Brigadier Athlenda Mathe.
She said the crimes covered by the AGU include dealing and trafficking of drugs as well as gang related shootings and murders.
The AGU is deployed in various hotspot areas that are plagued by gang activity in the different provinces, including Gauteng.
Mathe said in the Gauteng province, the unit is deployed to areas such as Eldorado Park, Westbury, Moffatview, Southhills, Mohlakeng, Toekomsrus and Sophiatown.
According to Mathe, on the afternoon of 3 June 2025, members of the anti-gang unit were patrolling in Westbury, while other members were conducting stop and searches along Steytler street. During the operation, they found a man in possession of drugs and he was immediately arrested.
After the suspect was arrested, members of the community began mobilising themselves and threw rocks and bottles at police officers on the scene. The AGU had to retreat and tactically withdraw from the operation by running for cover. The incident was captured on camera.
'The community of Westbury have from time to time been complaining about the high levels of crime including drug dealing in the area,' said police commissioner, General Fannie Masemola .
Masemola said they deployed the anti-gang unit to deal specifically with crime pertaining to drug dealing. He expressed disappointment in the community for attacking the police when they take charge and enforce the law.
The police commissioner said he cannot allow such an incident to repeat itself. He pleaded with the community to appreciate, support and work with the police and not attack them.
'We cannot and will not tolerate this lawlessness. Our members will continue to discharge their duties without fear or favour, ' said Masemola.
Mathe confirmed that no police officer or police property was damaged during the attack. She attributed this to members tactically withdrawing from the danger by discharging a warning shot.
General Masemola also encouraged members of the AGU to not be deterred by the incident. He said they should continue preventing and combatting gang violence in the area without fear or favour.

Standerton Regional Court sentences convicted serial rapist to another 25 years in jail A convicted serial rapist serving more than three life sentences and over 100 years has been sentenced to an additional 25 years in jail. Mahlangu then removed the vehicle's number plates, threw the victim's belongings out of the car and abandoned her in an isolated area. The victim got another lift to Charl Cilliers where she reported the incident and was referred to the Standerton Police Station for further investigation. The police took her to hospital for medical examination. In a dramatic twist of events, the victim later saw the suspect, who was already in jail, being escorted by prison wardens at a hospital,' said Ndubane. 'She immediately alerted the police who acted swiftly to investigate,' added Ndubane. Pretoria's Operation Shanela: 297 arrested in major crime crackdown
Multi-disciplinary efforts involving police, other government departments, and community policing forums led to the arrest of nearly 300 individuals as part of ongoing initiatives to combat crime in Pretoria this weekend. A coalition of various crime-fighting organisations resulted in the apprehension of 297 suspects for a range of offences, including murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, bribery, and rape, according to police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk. Captain van Dyk stated that Saturday's Operation Shanela specifically targeted the Hercules and Pretoria West policing precincts. 'A roadblock with two tactical teams was deployed across the Hercules and Pretoria West areas, resulting in the detention of 33 undocumented foreign nationals, who are currently being processed by immigration authorities,' he explained. During the operation, 544 individuals and 291 vehicles were searched, leading to 14 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol. 'Targeted patrols were conducted at 41 identified crime hotspots, resulting in further arrests and the issuance of fines. This included one person arrested for public drinking, interfering with police duties, and resisting arrest, as well as one suspect found in possession of three zip-lock bags containing crystal meth,' van Dyk added. Traffic enforcement units issued 19 AARTO infringement notices, totalling R13,500 in fines. Liquor compliance inspections were carried out at 12 establishments, resulting in the closure of seven for non-compliance. A total of 272,310 ml of alcohol and 17 cartons of illegal cigarettes were confiscated.
