Pretoria's Operation Shanela: 297 arrested in major crime crackdown
Multi-disciplinary efforts involving police, other government departments, and community policing forums led to the arrest of nearly 300 individuals as part of ongoing initiatives to combat crime in Pretoria this weekend.
A coalition of various crime-fighting organisations resulted in the apprehension of 297 suspects for a range of offences, including murder, attempted murder, kidnapping, bribery, and rape, according to police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk.
Captain van Dyk stated that Saturday's Operation Shanela specifically targeted the Hercules and Pretoria West policing precincts.
'A roadblock with two tactical teams was deployed across the Hercules and Pretoria West areas, resulting in the detention of 33 undocumented foreign nationals, who are currently being processed by immigration authorities,' he explained.
During the operation, 544 individuals and 291 vehicles were searched, leading to 14 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol.
'Targeted patrols were conducted at 41 identified crime hotspots, resulting in further arrests and the issuance of fines. This included one person arrested for public drinking, interfering with police duties, and resisting arrest, as well as one suspect found in possession of three zip-lock bags containing crystal meth,' van Dyk added.
Traffic enforcement units issued 19 AARTO infringement notices, totalling R13,500 in fines. Liquor compliance inspections were carried out at 12 establishments, resulting in the closure of seven for non-compliance. A total of 272,310 ml of alcohol and 17 cartons of illegal cigarettes were confiscated.

The operation involved collaboration among various authorities, including SAPS, the Department of Home Affairs, the Tshwane Metro Police Department, Gauteng Traffic Police, Gauteng Traffic Wardens, the Department of Correctional Services, the Department of Community Safety, and representatives from local Community Policing Forums.
SAPS District Commissioner of Tshwane, Major-General Samuel Thine, expressed gratitude to all participating stakeholders for their ongoing cooperation and commitment to enhancing community safety. He emphasised that such disruptive crime-combatting operations will continue across Tshwane to maintain and restore law and order.

Mooiplaats home invasion ends in fatal shooting
A home invasion in Mooiplaats, East of Pretoria, on Friday, June 20, culminated in a shooting between security guards and suspects. According to police spokesperson Johan van Dyk, the events began when a resident heard his dogs barking outside and went to investigate at around 21:30. 'The man was approached by five adult African men armed with pangas,' Van Dyk stated. The men then attacked the victim. 'The suspects also forced entry into the homes of other tenants, attacking them and robbing them of a television and a cell phone. The suspects then fled the scene on foot.' While police did not disclose the extent of the victims' injuries, social media posts suggested they were severe. According to Van Dyk, private security in the area tracked the suspects into nearby bushes. 'Seeing that they were surrounded, the suspects allegedly attacked the security guards with the pangas. The guards retaliated, shooting two of the suspects. One died at the scene, while the other was rushed to a nearby hospital.' Van Dyk confirmed that police are investigating a case of house robbery, murder, possession of stolen property, and possession of house break-in tools. ATM hacking accused freed on bail after magistrate's blunder in multimillion-rand case
A man who allegedly made millions in cash by hacking ATMs in the Eastern and Western Cape was released on bail late last week after the Bhisho High Court ruled that the magistrate had made a mistake by not giving reasons for the decision to keep him behind bars. One of the men arrested by the Hawks in March 2025 and linked to a syndicate that has allegedly netted R7-million by hacking ATMs has been released on bail after the court ruled that the magistrate hearing his bail application had made a mistake. Mongameli Tom was arrested with another man near Peddie in the Eastern Cape after the pair allegedly hacked into two ATMs in Mdantsane, Buffalo City. At the time of Tom's arrest the Hawks said that he was also linked to a series of ATM fraud incidents in the Western Cape. Tom has denied any involvement. Tom and the other man were intercepted near Peddie on 17 March 2025 following a multidisciplinary, intelligence-driven operation led by the East London Serious Organised Crime Investigation team. The Hawks explained at the time that the suspects allegedly disguised themselves as cash-in-transit security guards, armed with a rifle, to create the illusion that they were legitimately servicing the ATM. But instead they were using 'jackpot' software to hack into the ATM and take all the money. Tom was arrested by the Hawks on 19 March 2025. On 9 April 2025 he applied for bail but this was refused. He is charged with 51 counts of fraud and 52 counts of theft which were allegedly committed between Cape Town and East London. Four of these offences were committed in the Eastern Cape and two in the magisterial district of Mdantsane, where he appeared in court. In February and March 2025 amounts of R143,500 and R236,900 were taken from two ATMs at two garages in Mdantsane. Tom, from Mitchells Plain in the Western Cape, is the director of two companies, Abakwazidenge Trading (Pty) Ltd and Khundulu Holdings (Pty) Ltd. According to Tom both companies made between R30,000 and R50,000 profit a month but had stopped operating after he was arrested. In an affidavit before court – detailing his personal circumstances – he stated that he had dependent children and had to provide for their needs. Acting Judge Aaron Zono said the magistrate hearing Tom's bail application had not dealt with an affidavit setting out his personal circumstances. Tom has no previous convictions nor pending cases. 'There is not a single reason in the magistrate's judgment why [Tom's] case or version has not been accepted or rejected. We may only assume that it was rejected for the fact that it is not referred to in the judgment,' Zono said. 'In fact, the magistrate's failure to accept or reject appellant's case is rooted in his failure to consider the same. One cannot accept or reject something he has not considered. No balancing act has been made by the magistrate. 'The magistrate did not account for the judgment he gave. He did not analyse the evidence before arriving at his conclusion. He did not explain why the evidence of the accused persons was not accepted and why that evidence did not meet the standard of being reasonably possibly true. He did not even explain on what basis he found that the state had discharged its onus of proof and why its evidence was accepted. 'A judgment without reasons is arbitrary. Equally a judgment that does not account for all the evidence is arbitrary. A judgment without balancing exercise between the two opposing versions or evidence lacks proper analysis and is consequently arbitrary. Zono also said the State had not rebutted evidence presented by Tom, who denies knowledge of any crimes, but only stated that the prosecution's case is strong and Tom's case is weak. He added that the magistrate should have given a reasoned ruling on why bail was refused.

Standerton Regional Court sentences convicted serial rapist to another 25 years in jail A convicted serial rapist serving more than three life sentences and over 100 years has been sentenced to an additional 25 years in jail. The Standerton Regional Court sentenced Zakhele Isaac Mahlangu (44) for raping a 21-year-old woman on May 7, 2016. The victim was on her way to a hiking spot along the Secunda road (R546) near Charl Cilliers when Mahlangu offered her a lift in a white vehicle at about 14:00. 'The suspect claimed he was heading in the same direction,' said Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane. Along the way Mahlangu diverted onto a gravel road, claiming that he was going to pick up other people on a nearby farm. ALSO READ: 11-year-old girl and her elder sibling shot near Hazyview He then stopped the vehicle at a dumping site and covered the victim's face with a hat before physically assaulting her. 'The rapist then tied her up using a seatbelt, forcibly removed her clothing and raped her multiple times without protection, despite her resistance and cries for help,' explained Ndubane. Mahlangu then removed the vehicle's number plates, threw the victim's belongings out of the car and abandoned her in an isolated area. The victim got another lift to Charl Cilliers where she reported the incident and was referred to the Standerton Police Station for further investigation. The police took her to hospital for medical examination. In a dramatic twist of events, the victim later saw the suspect, who was already in jail, being escorted by prison wardens at a hospital,' said Ndubane. 'She immediately alerted the police who acted swiftly to investigate,' added Ndubane. The court ordered that the sentence run concurrently with the other sentences that Mahlangu is already serving. He was declared unfit to possess a firearm. Mahlangu's trail of criminal records was laid bare before the court. He was sentenced to 60 days with an option of R600 fine for burglary in September 1998. Mahlangu was also sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment for a rape in October 2002. After being released from jail, Mahlangu was again sentenced to three months' imprisonment and given a R1 500 fine for assault in April 2013. In August 2021 the Secunda Sexual Offences Court found Mahlangu guilty of raping several women and stealing their belongings. His reign of terror included kidnapping which dated back to 2014. The modus operandi that Mahlangu used over the years was to offer lifts to women. He then raped them and stole from them. He has faced 14 counts that included kidnapping, rape and theft. The court imposed three life sentences and 108 years on Mahlangu at the time. The latest sentence coincides with the latest Mpumalanga crime statistics which placed GBVF as the most-prevalant crime in the province.
