Asean guideline sets regional standards for victim protection

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: The Brunei Darussalam delegation led by Assistant Commissioner of Police Azree Abdul Manaf as the chairman of the Working Committee on Trafficking in Persons attended the launch of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Guideline on the Implementation of the Non-Punishment Principle for Protection of Victims of Trafficking in Persons (Asean Non-Punishment Guideline) on June 2 and 3 in Jakarta, Indonesia.
He was accompanied by senior officers from the Prime Minister's Office and the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The guideline marked the pivotal advancement in Asean's collective commitment to safeguard the rights of victims and enhancing the effectiveness of counter measures to trafficking throughout the Asean region.
The initiative is the result of the collaborative efforts between the Asean Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) and the Asean Senior Official Meeting on Transnational Crime (SOMTC).
It reflects the dedication of Asean members states to the principles outlined in Article 14 of the Asean Convention Against Trafficking in Persons, Especially Women and Children (ACTIP), while also strengthening the framework in the Asean Multi-Sectoral Work Plan Against Trafficking in Persons (Bohol TIP Work Plan 2.0).
Brunei Darussalam has implemented all 15 guidelines in the Asean Non-Punishment Guideline, demonstrating the nation's commitment in integrating this principle.
The launch was followed by two days of discussions on the strategies and implementation of the guideline.

Police also seized a black bag, a silver-black air pistol bearing the inscription Pietro Beretta Gardone V.T., a speed loader, and 30 ball-bearing bullets. The suspect has been remanded for seven days until June 23 to assist in the investigation under Section 33 of the Arms Act 1960 and Section 427 of the Penal Code for mischief. The case is still under investigation, and he urged the public not to speculate, as it could interfere with the ongoing probe.

Johor cops probe Singapore-registered car filmed driving against traffic on Senai-Desaru Expressway

JOHOR BARU, June 22 — Police are investigating an incident involving a Singapore-registered vehicle travelling against traffic at Kilometre 55 of the Senai-Desaru Expressway yesterday. Kota Tinggi police chief Supt Yusof Othman said that the incident is believed to have occurred at around 11.31 am yesterday, and a 12-second video was subsequently uploaded to the 'Community Roda Johor' Facebook page. SIBU, June 22 — Police have launched a manhunt for an Indonesian detainee who escaped from the Sibu Central Police Station lockup yesterday. Sibu Police Chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili said the incident occurred at around 4 pm while the 25-year -old detainee was still under lawful police custody. 'The suspect was on remand for investigation under Section 376(3) of the Penal Code for the offence of rape. At the time of escape, he was still wearing a purple lockup uniform and was handcuffed,' he said in a statement today.
