The Metaverse Was Suppose To Change How We Bank — What happened?

The metaverse was supposed to be transformative. In March 2022, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg called it 'the next chapter of the internet overall.' Three years ago, Satya Nadella, CEO at Microsoft, wrote on LinkedIn, 'The metaverse is here, and it's not only transforming how we see the world but how we participate in it — from the factory floor to the meeting room.' Back then, everyone was talking about it. And then, they stopped.
The banking industry embraced the metaverse at the height of its hype, with some institutions even launching their own initiatives. Coastal Community Bank developed Coastal World, for example, a digital banking 3D game and marketplace, while Quontic Bank created an outpost in Decentraland. But, as it did elsewhere, the metaverse eventually lost its luster in financial services. These ecosystems still exist; they haven't been shuttered, but there haven't been any obvious updates lately. And rarely does the metaverse come up in conversations among bank executives anymore.
So, what happened? Is the metaverse dead? Is there still any opportunity to be had?
Overall, the technology industry took a hit in the last few years as macroeconomic conditions deteriorated and private capital contracted. This is likely at least partly to blame. But beyond that, the metaverse ran into two distinct challenges: limited utility and a lack of societal readiness. In short, there weren't any killer use cases (outside of gaming, which is quite niche) and people were not ready to, as Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk put it, strap 'a frigging screen to their face all day.'
However, the metaverse opportunity may still exist — albeit in a less flashy, less monumental way. This is especially true in the context of two current 'hot' trends: artificial intelligence, including the rise of AI agents, and stablecoins.
Here are a few ways that elements of the metaverse could play out as the banking industry grapples with the implications of these two technologies:
Supercharged, generative AI-powered customer service is on the horizon. While the technology is not quite ready for primetime with bank customers, it's getting there. The form factor for such interactions today is a chat interface, but that may not always be the case. As agents transform into avatars, a metaverse-like environment may make more sense, especially if it takes the form of a virtual lobby or bank branch.
Generative AI is already getting incorporated into learning and development initiatives at community banks. LemonadeLXP, for instance, is a learning platform that uses generative AI to help bank employees create trainings and courses. Over time, such materials could evolve into a virtual setting. According to CEO John Findlay, 'Historically, the issue with 3D experience training is cost. If AI makes 3D environments affordable, it could become an excellent tool for teaching soft skills and situation training such as customer service or sales, and leadership and conflict resolution.'
Stablecoins are demonstrating potential utility in areas like online gaming, e-commerce, and cross-border payments. However, users need to be able to convert these digital assets to fiat currency and back again. Banks are well positioned to provide the on and off ramps necessary to facilitate these transactions. And that includes in virtual environments. Banks can also offer secure custody services.
These are only a few examples — there are likely many more. Particularly when it comes to AI, any place where there is a chatbot today could benefit from an avatar in the future. And avatars need somewhere to live. As these virtual assistants grow more and more human-like, where they reside may grow more and more world-like.
It's unlikely that the metaverse will regain its past momentum. Generally, once a buzzword dies, it stays dead. But that doesn't mean the spirit of the metaverse doesn't continue to present possibilities, for banks and for others. As society further experiments with advanced robots, digital currencies, and other new technologies, virtual ecosystems could emerge as an important mode for interaction.
Most likely, though, they'll have a new name.

Meta discussed buying Perplexity before investing in Scale AI

(Bloomberg) — Meta Platforms Inc. held discussions with artificial intelligence search startup Perplexity AI Inc. about a possible takeover before moving ahead with a multibillion-dollar investment in Scale AI, according to people familiar with the matter. Security Concerns Hit Some of the World's 'Most Livable Cities' One Architect's Quest to Save Mumbai's Heritage From Disappearing JFK AirTrain Cuts Fares 50% This Summer to Lure Riders Off Roads NYC Congestion Toll Cuts Manhattan Gridlock by 25%, RPA Reports Taser-Maker Axon Triggers a NIMBY Backlash in its Hometown The two companies couldn't come to an agreement and decided not to pursue the deal, said the people, who asked not to be named as the details of the talks aren't public. The financial terms under discussion could not be learned. Perplexity recently closed a new round of funding at a $14 billion valuation. The talks with Meta, which have not previously been reported, highlight Meta Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg's willingness to use deals and big hires to catch up in the AI race. The talks took place before Meta finalized a deal this month to invest $14.3 billion in Scale AI and take a 49% stake in the data-labeling startup. Meta and Perplexity didn't immediately respond to request for comment. Frustrated with the pace of Meta's AI development, Zuckerberg is making a concerted push to poach top AI talent from across the industry with lucrative pay packages. Meta has succeeded in hiring Scale AI's former CEO Alexandr Wang, as well as top researchers from Google DeepMind and Sesame AI Inc. Not everyone is jumping to join Meta, however. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said in a podcast this week that some on his staff had been approached by Meta with offers of $100 million signing bonuses and even bigger compensation packages, but had declined to join Meta. —With assistance from Julia Love. Why Accenture (ACN) Stock Is Trading Lower Today

Shares of global professional services company Accenture (NYSE:ACN) fell 7% in the afternoon session after the company reported weak first quarter 2025 (fiscal Q3) results: bookings in the quarter (a leading indicator of revenue) missed and EPS guidance was just in line. There were likely concerns about the sales pipeline as the number of new bookings (leading revenue indicator) fell 7%, compared to the more modest decline in the previous quarter. On the other hand, Accenture's revenue beat expectations. Revenue guidance for next quarter also topped Wall Street's estimates. Despite raising its full-year guidance for both revenue and EPS, the market's focus remained on the deceleration in bookings, suggesting concerns about the company's near-term growth prospects and the competitive landscape for IT services. The stock market overreacts to news, and big price drops can present good opportunities to buy high-quality stocks. Is now the time to buy Accenture? Access our full analysis report here, it's free. Accenture's shares are not very volatile and have only had 6 moves greater than 5% over the last year. In that context, today's move indicates the market considers this news meaningful, although it might not be something that would fundamentally change its perception of the business. Accenture is down 18.6% since the beginning of the year, and at $284.07 per share, it is trading 28.7% below its 52-week high of $398.25 from February 2025. Investors who bought $1,000 worth of Accenture's shares 5 years ago would now be looking at an investment worth $1,402. Zacks Investment Ideas feature highlights: Meta Platforms, Blackrock, IBIT, Circle and Coinbase

Chicago, IL – June 20, 2025– Today, Zacks Investment Ideas feature highlights Meta Platforms META, Blackrock BLK, iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF IBIT, Circle CRCL and Coinbase COIN. Bitcoin's launch in 2009 changed the world forever and triggered the crypto revolution. The world's first cryptocurrency rose from obscurity, once primarily used for nefarious purposes like buying drugs off the dark web off websites like 'The Silk Road,' to the mainstream. Today, Bitcoin is a $2.08 trillion asset and is larger than some of America's largest companies like Meta undeniable success has bred further innovations and new products. Depending on how you count, there are approximately 10,000 cryptocurrencies in existence. Few could have possibly predicted that, Blackrock, the world's largest asset manager and once a Bitcoin skeptic, would launch the iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF. Still, there have been many booms, busts, and too many failures to count. For example, non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, caught fire a few years ago, only to plunge in value and become irrelevant. That said, stablecoins are a rare and often overlooked crypto innovation that is likely to stay. Better yet, the stablecoin revolution is in its infancy and will only grow from here. When most investors think of cryptocurrencies, they think of rampant speculation and volatility. To most, these attributes are a feature, not a bug. However, a stablecoin is a cryptocurrency that is built to have low volatility and "peg" its value to a stable asset such as the fiat currency (like the US dollar) or a commodity like silver. Stablecoin operators back their stablecoins by holding fiat currency or T-bills in bank accounts. Beyond bringing low volatility to crypto, stablecoins bridge the gap between crypto and legacy finance. The primary benefit of using stablecoins is that they allow for far cheaper and more rapid transactions than traditional banks. In addition, these stablecoins allow for much easier international transactions and wait times. On 'The All-In Podcast,' venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya laid out two reasons stablecoin usage will surge in 2025: 1. Stablecoin usage decoupled from crypto volatility for the first time in 2024. In other words, stablecoins are being used for wholesale useful functions in running a business. 2. In the first half of 2024, stablecoins ($8.5T) had more than double the transaction volume of Visa (~$3.5T). Chamath continued, "I think we're going to finally attack the duopoly of Visa and Mastercard. I think you're going to see an innumerable number of use cases that sit and use stablecoin rails. Judging by the performance of recent IPO Circle, operator of the second largest stablecoin USDC (a stablecoin pegged to the dollar), the Wall Street investors believe the hype. CRCL shares are already up 79% since going public earlier this month! Meanwhile, while stablecoin demand is already impressive, a new bill advancing through congress can accelerate that demand. After years of running into regulatory hurdles, mostly from the Democrats, the US Senate has approved stablecoin legislation in a bipartisan vote. The bill would finally put a regulatory framework around issuing and operating stablecoins, lending credibility to the industry. Next, the bill will move to the US House of Representatives, where the Republicans hold a majority. Finally, it will go to President Trump's desk, where it will likely be signed (based on Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's comments). As mentioned, CRCL is a big winner based on its performance. Coinbase, which has a revenue share program with CRCL, is another big card companies like Mastercard and Visa as well as legacy banks, are potential is looking to move into the industry after filing a patent for a stablecoin-like token called JPMD. The stablecoin revolution is more than a fleeting trend; it's a fundamental shift in how we approach digital transactions in the broader financial landscape. With its efficiency, low cost, and legislative support, demand for stablecoins is set to soar. Why Haven't You Looked at Zacks' Top Stocks?
