Buy 5 AI Laggards of Past Month to Tap Solid Upside in the Short Term

Yahoo10 hours ago

The artificial intelligence (AI)-driven astonishing bull run of 2023 and 2024 has suffered major hurdles in 2025. The tariff and trade policies of the Trump administration, the Fed's ambiguity over further rate cuts this year, fears of a near-term recession and the availability of a low-cost Chinese AI platform have unnerved investors.
However, the technology sector has lately returned to its northward trajectory. Expectations of a U.S.-China trade deal and the ongoing negotiations with several other major trading partners of the United States boosted market participants' confidence.
Despite these positives, several large-cap AI stocks provided negative returns in the past month. Surprisingly, a handful of these stocks with a favorable Zacks Rank currently offer strong price upside potential in the short term.
Five such stocks are: Arista Networks Inc. ANET, HubSpot Inc. HUBS, Twilio Inc. TWLO, Adobe Inc. ADBE and Okta Inc. OKTA. Each of our picks carries either a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy) or 2 (Buy). You can see the complete list of today's Zacks #1 Rank stocks here.
The chart below shows the price performance of our five picks in the past month.

U.S. company to provide $6 billion loan for British nuclear power project

Protesters hold banners outside Hinkley Point power station in Somerset, United Kingdom, in 2011 against EDF Energy's plans to renew the site with two new reactors. The project began in 2017 and has had delays and funding problems File Photo by Ben Birchuk/EPA June 20 (UPI) -- Apollo, a U.S. asset management group, plans to provide a $6 billion loan to the British nuclear project Hinkley Point C being built by a French multinational electric utility company. Hinkley's estimated cost has soared from $23.7 billion to almost $60.6 billion and won't be operational until at least 2029, Baha Breaking News reported. Construction began in 2017. Apollo will provide an investment-grade debt financing package at an interest rate below 7% for the project developer, Electricite de France, sources told CNBC and the Financial Times. Apollo, which was founded in 1990 by Leonard Black, Josh Harris and Marc Rowan, manages capital for institutional and individual investors. Apollo, headquartered in New York City, had revenue of $26.11 billion in 2024 with a net income of $6.373 billion. The loan has a maximum maturity of 12 years. EDF is building two new nuclear reactors at the site in Somerset and will be able to borrow $2 billion each of the three years as part of the package. The company has had a shortfall since China General Nuclear Power Group, which was supposed to provide a third of the cost of the project, stopped providing further financing in 2023. CGN was removed by the British government from another project -- Sizewell C -- because of concerns about Chinese influence. The funding could be used for other British projects by EDF. Jamshid Ehsani, head of global principal structured finance at Apollo, described the deal as the "largest ever" sterling private credit deal. "It's going to help finance a critical, low-carbon nuclear project. This is the business Apollo is in today," he said. "Europe is a huge focus for us."

Mastercard (MA) Falters on Stablecoins Passage in Senate

We recently published a list of 10 Stocks Take A Shocking Nosedive. Mastercard Incorporated (NYSE:MA) is one of the worst-performing stocks on Thursday. Mastercard fell by 5.39 percent on Wednesday to end at $538.73 apiece as investors sold off positions on expectations that the Senate's passage of the stablecoins bill would pose a threat to its business. Stablecoins are a type of currency designed to maintain a 1:1 ratio with the US dollar and is widely used by cryptocurrency traders to move funds between tokens. Under the administration of President Donald Trump, Stablecoins gained momentum as an alternative payments method, emerging as a potential competitor to traditional payments companies, including Mastercard Incorporated (NYSE:MA). A woman using a payment terminal at the checkout of a store showing payment products and solutions. In the first quarter of the year, Mastercard Incorporated (NYSE:MA) saw its net income rise to $3.3 billion, higher by 10 percent than the $3 billion registered in the same period last year. Revenues also grew by 15.87 percent to $7.3 billion from $6.3 billion year-on-year. While we acknowledge the potential of MA as an investment, our conviction lies in the belief that some AI stocks hold greater promise for delivering higher returns and have limited downside risk. Estimating The Intrinsic Value Of BLD Plantation Bhd. (KLSE:BLDPLNT)

The projected fair value for BLD Plantation Bhd is RM10.68 based on 2 Stage Free Cash Flow to Equity BLD Plantation Bhd's RM10.76 share price indicates it is trading at similar levels as its fair value estimate Industry average of 423% suggests BLD Plantation Bhd's peers are currently trading at a higher premium to fair value Does the June share price for BLD Plantation Bhd. (KLSE:BLDPLNT) reflect what it's really worth? Today, we will estimate the stock's intrinsic value by projecting its future cash flows and then discounting them to today's value. We will take advantage of the Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) model for this purpose. There's really not all that much to it, even though it might appear quite complex. Companies can be valued in a lot of ways, so we would point out that a DCF is not perfect for every situation. If you still have some burning questions about this type of valuation, take a look at the Simply Wall St analysis model. Trump has pledged to "unleash" American oil and gas and these 15 US stocks have developments that are poised to benefit. We are going to use a two-stage DCF model, which, as the name states, takes into account two stages of growth. The first stage is generally a higher growth period which levels off heading towards the terminal value, captured in the second 'steady growth' period. To begin with, we have to get estimates of the next ten years of cash flows. Seeing as no analyst estimates of free cash flow are available to us, we have extrapolate the previous free cash flow (FCF) from the company's last reported value. We assume companies with shrinking free cash flow will slow their rate of shrinkage, and that companies with growing free cash flow will see their growth rate slow, over this period. We do this to reflect that growth tends to slow more in the early years than it does in later years. Generally we assume that a dollar today is more valuable than a dollar in the future, and so the sum of these future cash flows is then discounted to today's value: 2025 2026 2027 2028 2029 2030 2031 2032 2033 2034 Levered FCF (MYR, Millions) RM80.1m RM68.1m RM61.7m RM58.3m RM56.7m RM56.2m RM56.5m RM57.3m RM58.5m RM60.0m Growth Rate Estimate Source Est @ -23.00% Est @ -15.01% Est @ -9.41% Est @ -5.50% Est @ -2.76% Est @ -0.84% Est @ 0.51% Est @ 1.45% Est @ 2.10% Est @ 2.57% Present Value (MYR, Millions) Discounted @ 8.4% RM73.9 RM58.0 RM48.5 RM42.2 RM37.9 RM34.7 RM32.2 RM30.1 RM28.4 RM26.8 ("Est" = FCF growth rate estimated by Simply Wall St)Present Value of 10-year Cash Flow (PVCF) = RM413m We now need to calculate the Terminal Value, which accounts for all the future cash flows after this ten year period. For a number of reasons a very conservative growth rate is used that cannot exceed that of a country's GDP growth. In this case we have used the 5-year average of the 10-year government bond yield (3.6%) to estimate future growth. In the same way as with the 10-year 'growth' period, we discount future cash flows to today's value, using a cost of equity of 8.4%. Terminal Value (TV)= FCF2034 × (1 + g) ÷ (r – g) = RM60m× (1 + 3.6%) ÷ (8.4%– 3.6%) = RM1.3b Present Value of Terminal Value (PVTV)= TV / (1 + r)10= RM1.3b÷ ( 1 + 8.4%)10= RM586m The total value is the sum of cash flows for the next ten years plus the discounted terminal value, which results in the Total Equity Value, which in this case is RM999m. The last step is to then divide the equity value by the number of shares outstanding. Compared to the current share price of RM10.8, the company appears around fair value at the time of writing. Remember though, that this is just an approximate valuation, and like any complex formula - garbage in, garbage out. We would point out that the most important inputs to a discounted cash flow are the discount rate and of course the actual cash flows. Part of investing is coming up with your own evaluation of a company's future performance, so try the calculation yourself and check your own assumptions. The DCF also does not consider the possible cyclicality of an industry, or a company's future capital requirements, so it does not give a full picture of a company's potential performance. Given that we are looking at BLD Plantation Bhd as potential shareholders, the cost of equity is used as the discount rate, rather than the cost of capital (or weighted average cost of capital, WACC) which accounts for debt. In this calculation we've used 8.4%, which is based on a levered beta of 0.800. Beta is a measure of a stock's volatility, compared to the market as a whole. We get our beta from the industry average beta of globally comparable companies, with an imposed limit between 0.8 and 2.0, which is a reasonable range for a stable business. Check out our latest analysis for BLD Plantation Bhd Although the valuation of a company is important, it is only one of many factors that you need to assess for a company. It's not possible to obtain a foolproof valuation with a DCF model. Instead the best use for a DCF model is to test certain assumptions and theories to see if they would lead to the company being undervalued or overvalued. For example, changes in the company's cost of equity or the risk free rate can significantly impact the valuation.
