One specific area Alabama's defense must address to be a contender in 2025, expert says
The start of the 2025 college football season is 78 days away, and 85 days remain until the Alabama Crimson Tide open the season against the Florida State Seminoles in Tallahassee.
While SEC commissioner Greg Sankey and others are still trying to re-legislate Alabama's absence from last year's College Football Playoff, only 12 Saturdays remain until Alabama-FSU.
Both teams are looking for bounce-back years in 2025. The Crimson Tide want to improve on a 9-3 regular season in Kalen DeBoer's first year, which included a blowout loss to Oklahoma in Week 13 that ultimately kept Alabama from reaching the first-ever 12-team playoff field.
Florida State is in need of a hard reset. Mike Norvello's Seminoles followed up their 12-0 regular season and ACC championship from 2023 with a woeful 2-10 record last year that featured only one win vs. a Power Four school.
One potential concern for Alabama heading into 2025? CBS Sports and 247Sports analyst Brad Crawford believes it's on defense -- more specifically, the need for Kane Wommack's unit to establish a pass rush.
Per Crawford:
"Make no mistake -- this should be a stout defense for the Crimson Tide, especially considering cornerbacks tandem Zabien Brown and Domani Jackson are being discussed as one of the best in the conference. But if there's one area of concern, it's the ability to produce havoc numbers on the interior and edge since Alabama's inexperienced beyond James Smith and nose tackle Tim Keenan III. The Crimson Tide need a difference-making campaign out of LT Overton, who has best-in-the-conference type of potential."
Overton was recently named to the 2025 Lott IMPACT Trophy Watch List, along with linebacker Deontae Lawson. Lawson's 76 tackles were second on the team last year behind linebacker Jihaad Campbell, who departed for the NFL after a terrific junior season. Alabama's pass rush generated 25 sacks for 172 sacks yards. That ranked only 69th in FBS and was 14th out of the 16 SEC schools.
Year 2 of the DeBoer era in Tuscaloosa will coincide with Alabama's first ever visit to Doak Campbell Stadium on Aug. 30. The Crimson Tide and Seminoles will kick off at 2:30 p.m. CT on ABC.
Alabama is No. 9 in Crawford's post-spring top 25 rankings. ESPN and USA TODAY Sports also have the Crimson Tide at No. 9 in their respective post-spring rankings.

The Texas-Texas A&M Rivalry Doesn't Stand in the Way of These Two Future SEC Quarterbacks Dia Bell and Helaman Casuga
The Texas-Texas A&M Rivalry Doesn't Stand in the Way of These Two Future SEC Quarterbacks Dia Bell and Helaman Casuga originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The in-state Texas-Texas A&M rivalry isn't a cause for concern for these two class of 2026 quarterbacks. At the Elite 11 Finals, the Longhorn and Aggie quarterbacks represented their soon-to-be teams with top tier performances and respect. Texas A&M Aggies head coach Mike Elko and Texas Longhorns head coach Steve Lysaker-Imagn Images Four-star Helaman Casuga and five-star Dia Bell were standouts at the Elite 11 Finals. Casuga, who's committed to Texas A&M was honored as the MVP on day two of the event and was named the "most consistent" overall. Bell, the Texas commit, was honored as MVP on day three and was named as having the "best mechanics" overall. Beyond skill, though, the two future SEC quarterbacks showed their character at the Elite 11 Finals. Advertisement The future rivalry between the Longhorns and Aggies didn't affect them or get into their heads. Rather, the two developed a friendship at the event and continued supporting one another. "We're out here to compete, we're out here to show why we feel like we are the best and we're out here to just have a great time and connect with each other and hopefully build lifelong connections," Bell said. The only thing that mattered was encouraging each other during workouts and spending time warming up together. At the end of the Elite 11, their sportsmanship shone through as well as their talents. "I don't even think about him going to Texas ... I probably have the best connection with him out of everybody," Casuga said. "... He's a great competitor. Shoutout to [Bell]. Always working, always making sure that I'm pushing myself, and I do the same for him." Advertisement While all the participants at the Elite 11 Finals are going to high-end schools and may face each other down the line on the NCAA field, the event is a place to foster lifelong connections that surpass rivalries, records, and final scores. "Hopefully we don't have a lot of contention going off to college and we can still be boys," Casuga said. "That's my guy." Florida Football Preview 2025: Billy Napier Has His Best Gator Team Yet - But Is It Enough?
Florida is supposed to be playing for national the program of Spurrier, and Urban, and Tebow, and fun, and 'n', and gun, and spread, and Wuerffel - and basketball national titles - and Billy Napier was and is supposed to be the guy who came in and got everything back to rough has it been? Starting with the final season under Dan Mullen, the 26 losses mark the worst four-year run of Gator football since 1978 to 1981, and there was a 0-10-1 campaign in that mix. X CFN, Fiu | CFN Facebook | Bluesky Fiu, CFN Florida Offense BreakdownFlorida Defense BreakdownSeason Prediction, Win Total, Keys to SeasonBefore last year, the three straight losing seasons were the first time that happened since a stretch from 1945 to 1947. And following a 49-17 loss to Texas in mid-November, Florida appeared to be destined for its first four-season losing run since the then the offense clicked, the defense didn't allow more than 17 points in any of the final four games, Napier came up with a strong recruiting class, and now there's hope again that the big production is about to first, Florida just has to get closer to the pin against the good teams. This is the best squad yet under Napier. It was rebuilt to this point with a strong combination of depth, youth, and talent. There weren't any major losses through the transfer portal that can't be fixed, and there weren't a ton of players coming in other than to patch a few lines are strong, there's a rising superstar at quarterback in DJ Lagway, and the kicking game might be the best in the SEC. But the team needs to be in more tight games to let the special teams be the of the 19 losses under Napier, 12 of them were by double-digits, including four of the five defeats last year. And that's where the bar should be set. Of course Florida needs to be good enough to be a regular in the College Football Playoff, and of course Napier needs to do more, but out of those 19 losses under Napier, 13 were against the elite of the elite that finished with ten wins or this year's schedule might be the toughest of the again, it's Florida. It's supposed to be one of those elites among elites that take down all of the other good programs. It might not happen this year, but 2025 has to be the final season before it does. Tennessee Pushing to Poach Coveted Star From SEC Foe
Tennessee Pushing to Poach Coveted Star From SEC Foe originally appeared on Athlon Sports. One of the top 2026 edge rushers in Alabama is already committed to the Auburn Tigers. But the Tennessee Volunteers haven't given up on flipping that prospect. Advertisement On3's Chad Simmons reported Friday the Volunteers were set to host that edge rusher, four-star Hezekiah Harris, this weekend. "Can Tennessee get Hezekiah Harris away from Auburn? It won't be easy, but there is no doubt, the Vols are in this," Simmons wrote. "Harris lives in Alabama, Auburn signed his brother in the off-season out of the Transfer Portal and there is a lot he likes about the Tigers, but some feel he likes the Vols even more. "Can Heupel and company flip the four-star from the in-state school? They will give it their best shot this weekend." Tennessee Volunteers head coach Josh Heupel© Saul Young/News Sentinel / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images Harris is the No. 3-ranked edge rusher in Alabama and seventh overall prospect in the state based on the 247Sports Composite rankings. Advertisement In the entire 2026 class, Harris is ranked 12th among edge rushers and No. 93 overall according to the same rankings. With his high ratings and given the fact he's from Alabama, it's likely a tall task for Tennessee to flip Harris. The Volunteers, though, aren't new to Harris. The edge rusher has visited Knoxville, Tennessee four times since January. So, the Volunteers have taken a lot of time to develop a relationship with Harris. Simmons listed Harris on a list of five top targets "to keep a close eye on" who will be visiting Tennessee this weekend. Of those five targets, Harris was the only edge rusher.
