PGIMER to launch smart navigation app to facilitate patients
Chandigarh: The Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) on Tuesday said the institute will launch a smart navigation app, which will integrate real-time indoor mapping, QR code-based patient identification and crowd management features to streamline hospital navigation and reduce wait times.
PGIMER Director Prof Vivek Lal while unveiling an ambitious roadmap to redefine patient experience and hospital functioning said that a smart mobile application has been developed in collaboration with the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) Noida.
The app, expected to be launched by the end of this year, will integrate real-time indoor mapping, QR code-based patient identification and crowd management features to streamline hospital navigation and reduce wait times.
"This app will transform how we serve our patients and manage hospital systems. It is designed to make hospital visits smoother, more efficient and patient-friendly," said Prof Lal flanked by Dean (Academics) Prof R K Ratho, Dean (Research) Prof Sanjay Jain and PGIMER Medical Superintendent Prof Vipin Koushal among others.
The PGIMER Director shared significant progress on the institute's digital transformation journey, including the complete digitization of the Hospital Information System, which now handles processes such as indenting and medicine procurement under schemes like Ayushman Bharat entirely online, ensuring greater transparency and efficiency.
Prof Lal elaborated on the PGIMER's robust infrastructure pipeline led by the Rs 987 crore Sarangpur Project that will house a new 100-seat Medical College, modern OPDs for 16,000 patients and a 200-bed emergency block.
Additional developments include an all-weather swimming pool for the staff and students, a Trolley Way to streamline patient transfers between high-traffic blocks and a Doctors' Cafeteria soon to open on the fourth floor of A Block.
Prof Lal emphasized that PGIMER is also addressing rising patient loads, especially in emergency and trauma care, by securing approval to recruit 300 ex-servicemen through outsourcing over the next four to five months to strengthen campus security.
Additionally, 82 new faculty members have been recruited strictly as per the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) norms, including EWS reservation, reinforcing the institute's commitment to transparency and meritocracy.
Prof Lal touched upon Project Sarathi, the PGIMER's flagship NSS student-led patient navigation initiative.
Now scaled across 34 states with over 6,400 active volunteers, the Sarathi based model has been green lit for expansion to 1,467 hospitals nationwide under MyBharat.gov.in.
The PGIMER's focus on affordable healthcare also continues, with nine AMRIT stores accounting for 85 per cent of all medicine sales on campus and a new AMRIT Pharmacy facility set to open near the Emergency Block to ensure uninterrupted access to subsidized medicines under Ayushman Bharat and PMJAY, he said.
Prof Lal further said the PGIMER is set to operationalize the OPD of the upcoming Advanced Neurosciences Centre within three months, with equipment procurement under review.
The implementation of 12-hour OT schedules has already resulted in a 30 to 40 per cent increase in surgeries, enhancing patient throughput.
Meanwhile, the construction of the Sarangpur satellite centre is progressing steadily, with completion expected in about three years.>

Vijayawada: Continuing its aggressive incentive policy stand, Andhra Pradesh govt has decided to allot land to another IT major, Cognizant Technology Solutions , at 99 paisa per acre in Visakhapatnam. The 21.31 acres will be allotted at Kapuluppada area in the city. The State Investment Promotion Board (SIPB), in its recent meeting, approved the proposal of Cognizant to invest Rs 1,583 crore in its new ITES/IT campus. The state govt earlier allotted about 21 acres to another IT services major, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), at 99 paisa per acre. The new campus of TCS is likely to be launched by the end of July. TCS has promised to provide 12,000 jobs. IT minister Nara Lokesh earlier announced that the govt is ready to give land to top IT companies at the same price as that of TCS if they come up with a promise of creating employment opportunities for local youth. "The state govt is committed to turn Visakhapatnam into the IT capital of Andhra Pradesh and a new investment destination for companies. The discussions with Cognizant were initiated during the World Economic Forum summit in Davos. According to sources, Cognizant is planning its investment in three phases. The company has set a target of March 2029 for commencement of commercial operations. The project will be 100% self-funded. Together, TCS and Cognizant will bring 20,000 IT jobs to Visakhapatnam. Apart from direct employment, every job in the IT sector is expected to create indirect employment for four people. Besides TCS and Cognizant, Google is also planning to set shop in Visakhapatnam, which, according to sources, will be another major turning point in creating a whole ecosystem in new and emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and data centres.

IIT Guwahati develops mechanism to treat 1,000 litre contaminated water for Rs 20
New Delhi: Researchers at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Guwahati, have developed a low-cost community scale water treatment system that removes fluoride and iron from groundwater and can treat up to 20,000 litre of contaminated water per day, officials said. The findings of the research have been published in the prestigious ACS ES&T Water journal. The researchers claimed the system was highly affordable and could treat 1,000 litre of water at a paltry Rs 20. According to Mihir Kumar Purkait, Professor at Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Guwahati , fluoride, a mineral generally used in dental care products, pesticides, fertilisers and some industrial processes, can enter groundwater either naturally or through human activities such as agriculture and manufacturing. "Consumption of water with excess fluoride presence can lead to skeletal-fluorosis, a serious health condition in which bones harden and joints become stiff, making physical movement difficult and painful. In India, states including Rajasthan, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Haryana, and Gujarat, among others, face high levels of fluoride in groundwater," Purkait said. The IIT Guwahati research team developed a four-step system that ensures a cost-effective and energy-efficient technology for contaminated water treatment. Purkait said the hydrogen and oxygen bubbles produced during electrolysis interact with air bubbles, assisting in lifting pollutant particles to the surface. The selection of electrode material depends on factors like low cost, low oxidation potential and high electro-positivity after dissolution. "Among available options, aluminum has proven highly effective, particularly in the removal of iron, arsenic, and fluoride under optimal operational conditions," he said. The research team tested the developed system under real-world conditions for 12 weeks and recorded consistent performance. The results have shown removal of 94 per cent iron and 89 per cent fluoride from the wastewater, bringing the levels within safe limits set by Indian standards. "A key feature of the developed system is its cost effectiveness, with Rs 20 per 1,000 liters of treated water, making it highly affordable. The developed technology requires minimal supervision and has a projected lifespan of 15 years with electrode replacement scheduled every six months," he said. The study proposes a method to estimate electrode life using a built-in safety factor to ensure timely maintenance. As a pilot project, in support with the Public Health Engineering Department of Assam, the developed technology has been successfully installed by Kakati Engineering Pvt Ltd in Changsari, Assam. "We are also exploring the use of solar or wind power to operate the unit and to utilise the hydrogen gas generated during electrocoagulation process . By integrating smart technologies such as real-time sensors and automated controls, we will be able to further reduce the need for manual intervention, making the system more effective for remote and underserved areas," he said. The research team also aims to combine the current system with other water treatment methods to enhance performance and provide a decentralised water treatment solution. PTI

Inquiry committee submits report on VS illegal trials to Ahmedabad municipal commissioner
Ahmedabad: A five-member AMC committee completed its investigation into the alleged illegal clinical trials at VS Hospital and submitted a report, implicating top doctors in a multi-crore scam. Between 2021 and 2025, 58 unauthorized trials were conducted on over 500 patients in complete violation of rules, with payments from pharmaceutical companies routed to the accounts of senior doctors, instead of the hospital, said sources citing the report. The panel, led by the head of the AMC vigilance department, has reportedly recommended disciplinary action against all responsible parties. The municipal commissioner is now reviewing the report to decide whether a police complaint should be filed. Sources citing the inquiry report, which includes a 30-page summary and 500 pages of annexures, said that the key accused include then superintendent Dr Manish Patel, clinical head Dr Devang Rana, and contract doctor Dhaivat Shukla. "The trio allegedly siphoned off between Rs 17 crore to Rs 20 crore from pharmaceutical companies into their personal and family accounts. After conducting a preliminary investigation, the municipal commissioner then formed a special five-member inquiry panel on April 19. However, after questions were raised about one panel member's credibility, AMC's in-charge health officer Dr Bhavin Solanki was included in the committee. The probe was overseen by Hina Bhathawala, AMC's vigilance department chief. Earlier, eight doctors, including Dr Rana, were suspended, and a notice was served to the retired hospital superintendent. The committee also recorded statements from Dr Patel, Dr Rana, and other implicated personnel. A source, citing the inquiry report, said, "Over four years, 58 pharmaceutical companies conducted various unregulated vaccine and drug clinical research on more than 500 patients. The companies legally paid Rs 17 to 20 crore, none of which reached the hospital's official accounts. Instead, they were deposited into accounts belonging to Dr Patel, Dr Rana, Dr Shukla, their spouses, and even family HUF accounts. Some payments were allegedly made in cash. "The clinical trials were allegedly conducted using the approval of a private ethical committee instead of seeking clearance from the AMC, the hospital's management board, or the Medical Education Trust." Documents pertaining to these trials were either poorly maintained or deliberately concealed, said sources, drawing from the report. Despite a claim from Dr Patel that Rs 6 crore was deposited into the hospital account, the committee found no supporting documentation.
