On this day: road renaming to honour late Bradford councillor
On this day in 2020, the Telegraph and Argus reported that a road leading onto a new housing estate was to be named Ian Greenwood Way, in honour of Bradford Council's former leader.
Fletcher Lane, an existing street leading to Incommunities' forty-home development (then in construction) at Bolton Woods, was to be renamed following approval by Bradford Council's Shipley Area Committee.
Cllr Greenwood, who was also an Incommunities board member, died in 2018.
Geraldine Howley, Incommunities Group Chief Executive, said in 2020: "I am delighted to see this development taking shape and welcome Bradford Council's decision to name one of the roads onto the site in tribute to Ian.
"Ian was passionate about delivering good quality housing for everyone and served Incommunities, Bradford Council, and the city's communities with distinction.
"Our Bolton Woods development will be a fitting legacy to his service and I look forward to new tenants moving into their smart new homes over the coming months."
Cllr Greenwood was twice leader of Bradford Council, and represented Little Horton ward as a Labour councillor from 1995 to 2012.
He returned to the Council in 2018 to represent Bolton and Undercliffe ward.
He had previously served as a county councillor on West Yorkshire County Council, and was also on dozens of panels on Bradford Council and West Yorkshire Combined Authority.
In 2013 he was awarded the OBE for services to local government.

City projects celebrated at construction awards
Three major regeneration projects in Bradford will compete against each other at a construction awards ceremony next month. Bradford Live, Darley Street Market and the Shipley Sustainable Community Hub are shortlisted in the conservation and regeneration category at the Constructing Excellence Yorkshire and Humber Awards. Other Bradford projects, including the pedestrianisation of the city centre and repair work to Bradford Interchange, are nominated in other categories. Alex Ross-Shaw of Bradford Council said the recognition was a "testament to the value that these projects bring to the district". Bradford Live, which was visited by the King and Queen last month as part of City of Culture celebrations, has started hosting smaller events with a full programme of concerts beginning from August. Darley Street Market is due to open on 12 July, with Ross-Shaw promising a variety of traders that would "represent the best of Bradford". The Shipley Sustainable Community Hub, formerly the Kirkgate Centre, reopened in October last year following a £3m restoration. The Bradford projects will compete against schemes including the refurbishment of Hull's Maritime Museum and Leeds City College Mabgate Campus, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service. Meanwhile, the pedestrianisation of streets including Bridge Street, Market Street and Hall Ings, as well as the expansion of Norfolk Gardens park by Balfour Beatty, has been shortlisted in the infrastructure project of the year category. Work by Balfour Beatty to reopen Bradford Interchange after a year-long closure has been shortlisted for the integration and collaborative working award. The redevelopment of Bradford College's Garden Mills building on Thornton Road by Tilbury Douglas is shortlisted for the building project of the year. Ross-Shaw, Bradford Council's executive member for regeneration, planning and transport, said: "These major Bradford district projects being shortlisted for these awards in so many categories and also for multiple projects to be shortlisted in the regeneration and conservation category is a testament to the value that these projects bring to the district. "I'd like to thank all those involved in all these projects for their hard work and determination to get the best for the Bradford district and its people and future." The Constructing Excellence Awards will be handed out at the Royal Armouries in Leeds on 17 July. The 3 people from Bolton who have been recognised in the King's Birthday Honours list
A housing campaigner, a retired youth worker and an entrepreneurial NHS doctor from Bolton have been recognised in this year's King's Birthday Honours list. Jo Darbyshire from Lostock will pick up an OBE for Services to Housing and Leaseholders alongside Katie Kendrick and Cath Williams, her two co-founders of the National Leasehold Campaign (NLC). The not-for-profit group aims to ban all new leasehold properties, where homeowners must pay ground rent to whoever owns the land their house sits on, a system it describes as 'feudal'. 'This honour is not just ours; it belongs to everyone who has contributed to this critical movement for change,' said a statement from the trio. 'Our commitment to this campaign has meant many hours away from our families and we recognise the sacrifices they have made too. Speaking to The Bolton News, Jo said: 'I've known since early May when they ask if you want to accept the nomination, so I've been keeping it a secret for so long I'd almost forgotten about it. 'I've not even told the kids, that'll happen tonight. 'I told my mum and dad, though. 'Mum cried and my dad said, 'I blame the parents'.' Jo, who has appeared at the Law Commission was full of praise for her NLC co-founders. 'I've done this with my two best friends, and while it's nice to be recognised, it's nicer to know I've made a real difference to people.' Now working as a consultant after retiring from his previous role, he joined the North West arm of the charity in 2008 where he led the design, procurement and delivery of its national network of Youth Zones. One of its flagship centres is the Bolton Lads and Girls Club, which opened more than a century ago and is among the largest youth centres in the UK. "I am very grateful to have been nominated for this honour and proud to accept it on behalf of my wonderful colleagues at OnSide and all the many people from the growing network of OnSide Youth Zones across the country working so hard to provide better facilities and opportunities for young people,' Rob said. "Young people deserve better than we have been giving them, but I think this award reflects a growing recognition of the value and importance of youth clubs and youth work. 'It was Bolton Lads and Girls Club that inspired the work of OnSide and the work of the Club remains as important now as it has ever been.' (Image: UGC)Dr Prash Ladva, from Deane, will receive a British Empire Medal (BEM) for Services to British Citizen Doctors Trained Overseas. As well as being an NHS doctor, Dr Ladva is CEO of LinkMedics, a business that helps British overseas-trained healthcare professionals find work in the UK. It's a route he knows well as he went through medical school in Bulgaria after being rejected for doctor training in Britain when his A-Level grades fell short. Now associate non-executive director at the Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust, he also won the Young Entrepreneur of the Year at the 2023 Bolton Business Awards. Dr Ladva said: " It's an incredible honour to be recognised in the King's Birthday Honours List, and I'm truly humbled to receive the BEM. This honour reflects the amazing support I've had from colleagues, family and mentors, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to contribute meaningful change to the NHS. It's now all about how we widen that impact and make a longlasting tangible difference to society."

Thai restaurant in Carlisle to reopen tonight after six-week closure
A POPULAR Thai restaurant in Carlisle city centre is set to reopen this evening after a period of extended closure. Namh Moon which is located at Treasury Court, off Fisher Street, has been closed for over six weeks. On Tuesday, April 29, the team announced online that they would be closed for two weeks due to "unforeseen circumstances." However, today (Friday, June 13) owner, Ian McGregor told the News & Star they are reopening tonight at 5pm. 2023 REVIEW: Namh Moon: Carlisle has been blessed with new Thai treasure He said: 'After a lengthy closure due to a family emergency in Thailand and illness we are pleased to be able to open tonight at 5pm. 'We appreciate the understanding and patience of our loyal customers. 'We are just so pleased to be able to open.' Ian runs the restaurant with his wife Nueng who is the chef and the family also own Star of Siam in Keswick. Namh Moon opened in the city in December 2023 and offers a range of Thai food.
