The best retinol hand creams for smooth, firm skin, according to dermatologists
Between sun exposure and frequent hand washing, the skin on your hands goes through a lot. Just like you've created a skin care routine for your face, using hand-specific formulas is essential to keeping this area soft, healthy and resilient. One beneficial ingredient many experts point to may be one you're already familiar with: retinol.
'The skin on our hands is prone to roughness and thinning,' says Dr. Arash Akhavan, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City. 'Retinol promotes faster skin cell renewal and collagen generation, leading to smoother, firmer-looking skin with consistent use.'
To help you find the right retinol hand creams, I talked to skin experts about what to look for in a quality formula, and included their recommendations for the best ones to shop.
How we picked the best retinol hand creams
The best retinol hand creams are hydrating without being irritating, according to our experts. Here's what they recommend I keep in mind when curating this list:
Ingredient lists: Retinol goes well with certain ingredients when it comes to the skin on the hands, one of them being hyaluronic acid. 'Hyaluronic acid is ideal to pair with retinol, which can be drying, because it can help hydrate and plump the look of skin,' says Yadav. Peptides, the building blocks of protein, are another ingredient to look for in a retinol hand cream. Peptides support retinol's effects and counteract the dryness that often comes along with its use, says Yadav. Finally, shea butter, a natural substance derived from the seeds of the shea plant, has emollient properties that prevent water from escaping the skin, according to Yadav, who says that it also helps keep skin soft, comfortable and less reactive to retinol's drying effects.
Retinol concentration: In general, the retinol concentration in a hand cream will be less than what you'd see in a face cream. Typical strengths in a hand cream may be below 0.3% while facial retinol products can be up to 1%, says Akhavan. 'The lower concentration for hand creams is necessary because the skin on the hands is thinner and more frequently exposed to environmental stressors, making it more prone to irritation,' says Akhavan. If your skin leans very sensitive, it may be best to choose a retinol hand cream with a lower concentration, especially if you're a frequent hand washer or your hands are exposed to the sun often.
The best retinol hand creams in 2025
Necessaire The Hand Retinol
If you're looking for a potent retinol hand cream, this Necessaire formula is a good option. It combines 0.25% retinol with resurfacing AHAs to remove dark spots and even the skin tone, says Akhavan, who recommends this formula because it's lightweight and quick-absorbing. 'With regular use this product can address crepiness, wrinkles, spots and brittle cuticles,' he says.
French skincare brand Odacite's retinol-infused hand cream comes recommended by Yadav, who says the rich formula combines retinol with peptides (for firming), PHA (a gentle resurfacing agent), niacinamide (for brightening) and hyaluronic acid (for hydration). 'It also has a blend of nourishing plant oils and butters, making it best for hands that are especially dry,' she says. Even though this hand cream comes in a tub (versus a tube like the others on our list), it has a push-top that dispenses the product in a sanitary fashion.
This hand cream has encapsulated retinol, which Akhavan says ensures a gradual release to minimize potential irritation. 'This is a particularly good hand retinol choice for people with sensitive skin, as the special slow release formulation of the retinol increases tolerability,' he says. While this formula has a thinner consistency and may not feel deeply moisturizing on scaly, cracked skin, it's lightweight and absorbs quickly, according to the brand.
This hand cream is a two-in-one formula that moisturizes dry hands and strengthens the nails and cuticles. It has a warm, spicy scent and comes in a refillable jar, making it great for those looking to be more conscious with their beauty products. A blend of colloidal oatmeal and panthenol balances out the 0.05% retinol — just keep in mind that this isn't a hand cream suitable for sunburnt or sensitive skin, according to the brand.
'I love the way this bottle looks on my nightstand,' says Schneider, who received a sample from Soft Services. 'I'm more inclined to use it regularly since I can leave it out right next to my bed. The cream goes on really nicely and since it's on the thinner side, it's easy to rub in. I hate overly thick formulas that require a lot of massaging.'
Chantecaille Retinol Hand Cream
In addition to shea butter and retinol, this formula has mulberry extract and vitamin C, 'one of the most valuable antioxidants that provides protection from free radical damage,' and brightens and promotes collagen production for firmer, smoother skin, says Yadav. It also has tree bark extract, which helps reduce the appearance of discoloration, according to the brand.
Retinol concentration: not listed | Key ingredients: shea butter, mulberry root, vitamin C, tree bark extract
How to shop for retinol hand creams
When shopping, our experts recommend looking at several factors, including the types of moisturizers used and any additional benefits of the formula.
Moisturizer type is important
Moisturizers come in three forms: humectants, emollients and occlusives. The hand cream you choose should incorporate one or more of these types of moisturizers, and the one you pick should depend on your specific needs and preferences.
Humectants: Humectants, like hyaluronic acid and glycerin, help draw moisture into the skin to maintain optimal hydration levels since retinol can be drying. In a hand cream, humectants can also contribute to a formula's thinner consistency and lightweight feel.
Emollients: Emollients, including shea butter and squalane, help soften and smooth rough, dry skin by filling in small gaps in the skin barrier. Emollients can also help combat irritation and redness, making them a good choice for those with sensitive or severely dry skin.
Occlusives: Occlusives, like petrolatum and dimethicone, create a protective barrier that seals in moisture and prevents dehydration, says Akhavan.
Consider alternate key benefits
While the main benefit of a hand cream is to hydrate the skin, a retinol hand cream comes with the added benefit of combatting fine lines and improving skin texture. Some retinol hand creams pair the ingredient with skin barrier-repairing ingredients to strengthen the skin over time and thus, prevent long-term dehydration. Other formulas have brightening ingredients that make them ideal for those battling sun spots.
Retinol hand creams can also help boost collagen production, which is good for minimizing the appearance of wrinkles and firming the skin. 'Collagen provides important structural support to our skin that helps it look firm and resilient — without it, skin appears thin with more noticeable texture from fine lines and wrinkles,' says Yadav.

New Michael Schumacher health condition update as truth and fiction cleared up
New Michael Schumacher health condition update as truth and fiction cleared up There have been true and false claims made to date about Michael Schumacher's health status, with more than a decade having past since his skiing accident which left him with life-altering injuries Flavio Briatore has revealed he is contact with Michael Schumacher's wife, Corinna (Image: Getty Images ) There have been precious few detailed updates on Formula 1 icon Michael Schumacher's condition following his devastating skiing accident. Schumacher was in the French Alps in December 2013 where he hit his head on a rock and suffered a near-fatal brain injury. Now 56, he has been kept out of public view ever since, with only a select number of visitors allowed inside the family home near Lake Geneva in Switzerland, where he is receiving round-the-clock medical care. Earlier this month, one of his former team bosses, Flavio Briatore, revealed he is in regular communication with Schumacher's wife, Corinna. The Italian, who was in charge at Benetton, where the German won his first two F1 titles, told Corriere della Sera: "If I close my eyes, I see him smiling after a victory. "I prefer to remember him like that rather than him just lying on a bed. Corinna and I talk often, though." That followed a more detailed update from Briatore's ex-wife, Elisabetta Gregoraci, who claimed: "Michael doesn't speak, he communicates with his eyes. Only three people can visit him and I know who they are." Following that update, here is what we know to be true about Schumacher's condition… Article continues below Claims Schumacher could walk In 2016,German magazine Bunte claimed in an article Schumacher was able to walk and "raise an arm". It raised huge hopes among fans amid previous rumours of progress in his condition. However, the Schumacher family took legal action against the magazine, with the report branded 'irresponsible' . The court hearing resulted in Schumacher's lawyer, Felix Damm, revealing that the then-47-year-old was unable to walk or stand, even with assistance. 'Unfortunately, we are forced by a recent press report to clarify that the assertion that Michael could move again is not true,' a family statement said. 'Such speculation is irresponsible because, given the seriousness of his injuries, his privacy is very important for Michael. Unfortunately, they also give false hopes to many involved people.' Reported stem cell treatment In 2019, Schumacher was reported to have undergone stem cell treatment in an effort to regenerate his nervous system. Le Parisien claimed he was admitted for transfusions of inflammation-reducing stem cells, and also quoted an anonymous nurse who claimed Schumacher was showing signs of recovery. "Yes he is in my service," the nurse said. "And I can assure you that he is conscious." However, the racer is believed to have developed muscle atrophy and osteoporosis after being bed-bound. French magazine Paris Match spoke to what it described as "close relatives" ahead of his 50th birthday in January 2019. The magazine quoted one as saying: "When you put him in his wheelchair facing the beautiful panorama of the mountains overlooking the lake, Michael sometimes cries." The Schumacher family refused to comment on any of the reports or confirm the stem cell treatment. Daughter's wedding claim rebuffed Reports surfaced in Germany last year claiming Schumacher was present at the wedding of his daughter, Gina-Maria, and Iain Bethke in Majorca. While the family does have a home on the Spanish island, reports that Michael attended his daughter's nuptials were dismissed as 'fake news'. One of his former team-mates, Johnny Herbert, said: 'Unfortunately, from what I understand, that was all A1 fake news and no truth in it.' Johnny Herbert and Schumacher were Benetton team-mates in the mid-1990s (Image: Ben Radford/ALLSPORT ) Helmet signing Earlier this year, it was revealed that Schumacher had signed a helmet for F1 legend Sir Jackie Stewart's dementia charity. The seven-time world champion signed his initials 'MS' on the helmet with the aid of Corinna. It will be auctioned to raise money for Stewart's Race Against Dementia charity, set up by the three-time world champion after his wife Helen began suffering from the disease. Stewart confirmed to the Daily Mail: 'It is wonderful that Michael could sign the helmet in this worthy cause, a disease for which there is no cure." However, Stewart did also dispel the idea that Schumacher did the act by himself, adding: "His wife helped him, and it completed the set of every single champion still with us.' Sir Jackie Stewart with the helmet with the signatures of all 20 living world champions, including Schumacher's (Image: Mark Sutton - Formula 1/Formula 1 via Getty Images ) Watching F1 with former boss One of the Schumacher family's most trusted confidantes is Jean Todt, Michael's team boss during his run of five straight F1 titles with Ferrari between 2000 and 2004. The Frenchman has offered updates about his friend's condition while asking for the media to respect the family's privacy. Todt told La Repubblica earlier this year: 'The family has decided not to answer the question [on his condition], a choice that I respect. "I see him regularly and with affection, him and his family. Our bond goes beyond the past work. It is part of my life, which today is very far from Formula 1." Jean Todt is a trusted confidante of the Schumacher family (Image: Getty Images ) Todt previously revealed he watches F1 races with Schumacher, telling German broadcaster RTL in 2022: "I don't miss Michael. I see him. Yes, it's true, I watch races with Michael. But sure, I guess what I miss is what we used to do together." In 2023, he revealed to L'Equipe : "[He] is simply not the Michael he used to be. He is different and is wonderfully guided by his wife and children, who protect him.' Schumacher's inner circle Earlier this year, Felix Gorner – a reporter for RTL – said that Schumacher is "completely dependant" on caregivers and "can no longer express himself verbally". Gorner added that 20 people have access to the former Mercedes driver, a deliberate choice by the family to protect his privacy. That should come as no surprise, as Schumacher was fiercely protective of his family's privacy during the height of his racing fame. Schumacher's privacy has been fiercely protected by Corrina (Image: Getty Images ) Article continues below 'Michael is here' Corinna has been at the forefront of the battle to ensure her husband's privacy. However, as part of the 2021 Netflix documentary Schumacher, she offered a rare truthful insight into his condition. "Michael is here. Different, but he's here, and that gives us strength, I find," she shared with fans. "We live together at home. We do therapy. 'We do everything we can to make Michael better and to make sure he's comfortable, and to simply make him feel our family, our bond. And no matter what, I will do everything I can. We all will.'

Kylian Mbappe in hospital after missing Real Madrid's first Club World Cup game
Kylian Mbappe has been taken to hospital in the United States after missing Real Madrid's Club World Cup opener on Wednesday. The 26-year-old trained with his Madrid teammates in Florida last Sunday ahead of their first game in Group H against Al-Hilal. However, Mbappe missed Tuesday's training session, with Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso claiming that the French forward was suffering from a fever. 'Kylian was feeling a little better, but not enough,' Alonso said after Tuesday's session. 'It's better for him not to train. We'll wait until the last minute, we'll decide tomorrow.' Acute gastroenteritis, often called the stomach flu, is a common condition causing inflammation of the stomach and intestines. It typically results in symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, often accompanied by fever and dehydration. The ‘correct' portion size of chips has been revealed & people have been left utterly baffled by it
Plus, more about the foods you should eat on a healthy diet CHIP AWAY The 'correct' portion size of chips has been revealed & people have been left utterly baffled by it THE 'correct' portion size of chips has been revealed – and it's safe to say people are utterly baffled by it. Chips are a staple of British comfort food, whether they're paired with fish on a Friday night, piled high next to a juicy burger, or enjoyed straight out of a takeaway box. 2 According to nutritionists, the recommended serving size of chips is shockingly small Credit: Getty But now, the suggested 'right' portion size has been revealed, leaving people questioning everything they thought they knew about their favourite treat. According to nutritionists, the recommended serving size is shockingly small – just 10 chips. Social media users were quick to react to the revelation after TikTok user @chellep78 posted a video explaining that she eats that amount while deciding whether she even wants chips. 'I eat 10 chips while I'm plating up,' one person commented, while another joked, 'Mate, I shove 10 chips in my gob all at once.' For comparison, McCain recommends a serving size of 110g for its Straight Home Chips, while Birds Eye suggests 125g for its Crispy Straight Cut Chips. As @chellep78 points out, this equates to around 10 chips per serving. However, a single serving of oven chips already exceeds the quantity suggested by a Harvard scientist, who believes a portion should be even smaller - just six chips. Speaking to the New York Times, Professor Eric Rimm, a nutritionist at Harvard University, explained: 'There aren't a lot of people who are sending back three-quarters of an order of French fries. "I think it would be nice if your meal came with a side salad and six French fries.' For most Brits, chips are a food of indulgence, not restraint. I lost half a stone eating cold chips Whether they're thick-cut, skinny fries, or drenched in salt and vinegar, it's hard to imagine stopping at six - or even ten - chips. More people joined in on the debate on TikTok, sharing their thoughts on the surprisingly small portion size. One wrote: 'I eat at least ten while I'm debating what I'm going to have with what I now know is 4x more chips than I should have had." Another added: 'I'm already snacking on potato wedges, French fries, seasoned fries, curly fries, and skin-on fries while I'm waiting for my regular chips to cook.' 2 A TikTok user was shocked after hearing the 'correct' amount of chips people should have on their plate Credit: tiktok/@chellep78 And a third said: 'I don't think I'd bother at all if I had to restrict my portion to 10 chips. I'm an all-or-nothing sorta girl.' So, while the 'correct' portion size might technically be six - or ten - it seems most people are sticking to their own rules when it comes to enjoying this beloved snack. Let's face it – who can really stop at just six chips?
