Education plays a vital role in women empowerment: Maharashtra CM Fadnavis
Nagpur: Education is a key factor in women empowerment, and to support this, the state government is implementing several schemes to encourage girls' education, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Saturday.
Against this backdrop, the initiative by a bank under the 'Umeed' CSR programme to distribute bicycles and school supplies to needy girl students is commendable, said Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at an event held on Saturday.
Under the initiative, the Chief Minister distributed bicycles and school kits to girl students. He also inaugurated the Dhanwantari Health Camp at the event.
CM Fadnavis stated that one of the major hurdles in girls' education is the long-distance travel to school.
The bicycles will not only make commuting to school easier but also help in maintaining regular attendance. This initiative is particularly beneficial in enhancing educational outcomes for girls in rural areas.
He further praised the bank for being socially responsible and understanding the educational challenges faced by underprivileged and needy girl students.
The Chief Minister mentioned that the bank also undertakes various such initiatives every year. Through the Dhanwantari Health Camp, free eye check-ups, distribution of spectacles, and other health screenings are conducted. This will certainly help in maintaining the good health of girl students.
The Chief Minister also recalled a recent event in Kawande village, a remote area in Gadchiroli district, where bicycles were distributed to girl students. He shared the joy he felt seeing the happiness on their faces. He expressed hope that such initiatives will help fulfill the higher education dreams of girls deprived of modern facilities and resources.
He urged the bank to continue organising such programmes in the future.
Meanwhile, CM Fadnavis said that diabetes can be prevented through an ideal lifestyle. 'Traditional dietary habits developed through conventional lifestyles have undergone improper changes due to urbanization. As a result, various diseases are affecting people at a younger age. By adopting an ideal lifestyle, it is possible to stay away from diabetes,' he added.
He was speaking at the 2nd International Conference 'Hello Diabetes', jointly organised by the Diabetes Care and Research Center and the Diabetes Care Foundation of India.
Highlighting the serious and concerning spread of diabetes and obesity in India, the Chief Minister said that such awareness conferences contribute significantly to ensuring that India does not become the diabetes capital of the world. He added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has launched several initiatives such as the Fit India Movement to address lifestyle-related diseases, prioritising health awareness.
Stressing the need for in-depth research on diabetes, the Chief Minister said that public awareness about the causes, remedies, and ideal lifestyle practices to prevent diabetes is essential. He emphasized that awareness is the first and most effective treatment against this disease that weakens human physical abilities.
Preventing gestational diabetes in pregnant women and thereby reducing the risk to newborns is a major challenge before medical experts. He expressed confidence that if positive outcomes emerge from this conference, future generations can remain diabetes-free.
He also pointed out that one of the biggest problems is the reluctance to accept the disease after its diagnosis. Hence, such conferences should provide proper guidance on not only medication but also necessary lifestyle changes. The Chief Minister expressed hope that the expert discussions at the conference would offer direction for diabetes treatment in the country.

Fadnavis, Shinde lead Yoga Day celebrations in Maharashtra
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde led large-scale events in Pune and Mumbai respectively on Saturday, as Maharashtra marked the 11th International Day of Yoga with widespread public participation. From university campuses to pilgrimage routes and the Mumbai coastline, thousands joined in synchronised yoga sessions aimed at promoting physical and mental well-being. In Pune, Fadnavis addressed a Warkari Bhakti-Yoga programme organised by Savitribai Phule Pune University, Sant Dnyaneshwar Maharaj Sansthan (Alandi), and Sant Tukaram Maharaj Sansthan (Dehu). The event brought together Warkari pilgrims, students, faculty members, and officials in a collective yoga session. 'Yoga is the soul of India's cultural heritage and a path to a healthy and joyous life,' Fadnavis said, while giving credit to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for securing the United Nations' recognition of Yoga Day 11 years ago. While highlighting the scientific design of asanas and their relevance to holistic wellness, Fadnavis also launched a new initiative, 'Arogya Wari', to integrate yoga into college campuses statewide. 'Today, the Warkari community embodied the PM Modi's message of 'Ek Bhumi, Ek Arogya (One Earth, One Health)' through unified practice,' he added. Over 700 colleges across the state participated in coordinated yoga sessions, including more than 6,000 students and 1,200 faculty members in Pune district alone, according to the National Service Scheme (NSS). Participants practiced asanas such as Tadasana, Bhujangasana, Makarasana, Kapalbhati, and Anulom-Vilom, under the guidance of Dr Pallavi Kewhane's team. Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil, Minister of State Madhuri Misal, and scholar Dr Sadanand More were among those present, along with senior civic, police, and university officials. Patil noted that nearly 10 million people worldwide participated in yoga events. 'This reflects yoga's growing global relevance as a bridge between ancient wisdom and modern wellness,' he said. In Mumbai, Shinde participated in a grand public yoga session at Marine Drive. 'Thanks to the leadership of PM Modi, yoga has been embraced globally,' Shinde said while extending the greetings on Yoga Day. 'It brings balance, peace, and discipline. We must make it a daily habit—not just an annual observance.' Sena MP Shrikant Shinde likened yoga to national defence, saying, 'Just as soldiers guard our borders, yoga protects our bodies and minds.' Shaina N C, Shiv Sena leader and president of I Love Mumbai, highlighted her organisation's monthly public yoga sessions and aligned the event with the government's 'One Earth, One Health' campaign. 'Yoga is not only for the body but for the soul. It connects us with nature and each other,' she said. Inspector General Bhisham Sharma, Commander of the Coast Guard Region (West), stressed on yoga's value for the physical and emotional resilience of armed forces personnel. Participants were guided through yoga, breathing exercises, and meditation by Mickey Mehta and instructors from The Yoga Institute. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde visited Drass in Kargil to inaugurate Sarhad Shauryathon 2025, marking 26 years of India's victory in the Kargil War. Organised by the Indian Army, Sarhad Pune, and Arham Foundation, the high-altitude marathon at 10,800 ft features over 3,000 participants. The event includes four races named after key battle points, paying tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of Indian soldiers.

Stating that yoga is a holistic way to rejuvenate the body and mind, CM Fadnavis said, "Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed Yoga Day in the United Nations to make the world accept our ancient knowledge of yoga, and this is the only proposal in the history of the United Nations that has been supported by all countries. IDY has been celebrated for the last 11 years." 'Anyone can practice yoga to revitalise and uplift the body, mind, and all the chakras in the body. All these asanas are designed keeping in mind the structure of the body. Yoga postures are designed to guide and treat every external and internal organ of the body, from nails to hair. Yoga postures are seen in the world as a healing power, a healthy lifestyle (wellness),' he remarked. 'This year, the Warkari community is the one who is giving the message of 'One Land, One Health' given by PM Modi through action. Therefore, doing yoga with the Warkari community is a kind of joy. Today, all the Dindiyas are doing yoga at their places of stay. Also, students from 700 colleges have participated in yoga, which is a matter of joy. The organisers have given a new arena to Arogya Wari and it should continue forever,' said the CM. Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Governor led a yoga session in Raj Bhavan saying that he will discuss introducing yoga in universities. Stating that yoga is India's gift to the world, he called for making it a way of life. Observing that many people start practicing yoga only after they have crossed their 40s and 50s, the Governor said he wanted to introduce yoga in all universities and would discuss the matter with Vice Chancellors. Introduction of yoga at young age will keep the youths free from stress and diseases, said the Governor. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who attended the 'Yoga by the Bay,' event said, 'Due to the initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi IDY is now celebrated worldwide. Today, as the importance of yoga has been recognised, people are celebrating Yoga Day on such a large scale. Yoga practice has the power to keep many diseases at bay. I also extended best wishes to everyone for the successful organisation of this initiative.' Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in his post on X said, 'Yoga is a mindset that nurtures both personal well-being and the planet's health.
