San Sebastian Lady Stags beat EAC to end NCAA Season 100 on high note

San Sebastian College-Recoletos defeated Emilio Aguinaldo College, 25-15, 23-25, 25-20, 25-16, to end its NCAA Season 100 women's volleyball campaign on a high note on Tuesday at the Filoil Centre in San Juan.
Von Dimaculangan stood out in the Lady Stags' last game with 19 out of their 20 excellent sets, to go with five points, as she distributed the ball for three spikers to score in double digits. Divine Garcia had 14 points, while KJ Dionisio and Julia Gonzales had 11 points apiece.
The Lady Stags ended the first round with a 5-4 record but eventually fell short in the second round to finish with a 8-10 card.
According to San Sebastian consultant Roger Gorayeb, the team might have been overconfident after the first round.
"Siguro ang ganda nung nilaro nila, akala nila ganoon na lang din. Overconfident," Gorayeb said, adding that the longer tournament schedule might have also been a factor in their campaign as they needed to adjust.
Gorayeb said on top of improving the Lady Stags' mental toughness, they will also try to recruit new players, especially with setter Dimaculangan leaving as she decided to turn professional.
Cara Dayanan led EAC with 16 points, while Jing Alimen added 15. Jaja Villena, who played her last game as a Lady General, had 12 points, while Alex Razonable also chipped in 12 points as EAC capped the tourney with a 4-14 record.
Assistant coach Sid Gerella said EAC's campaign has already improved compared to last season where they went winless.
"Maganda ang performance ng women's, kailangan lang siguro namin dagdagan pa ang efforts namin and experience pa. For sure, kaya namin maging mas competitive pa. Although galing kami sa zero, good pa rin ang performance kasi hindi kami naka-zero this year and nakalaban kami sa top tier teams kaya good pa rin ang ending ng season," Gerella said as he called the shots with head coach Rod Palmera out due to an emergency.

The defending champions Cardinals relied on an all-around outing from graduating Clint Escamis to pull off a 76-68 win against the rebuilding Heavy Bombers. Escamis posted 13 points, seven assists, and three rebounds to help Mapua improve to 4-2 while Cyril Gonzales churned out a team-high 21 markers together with four rebounds, two dimes, and two steals. Perpetual, on the other hand, halted a three-game slide by eking out a 75-61 win against the Stags behind near double-double showing from debuting transferee Patrick Sleat. Collegiate Press Corps to honor top student-athletes in annual awards night
The Collegiate Press Corps, made up of sportswriters covering the collegiate beat, will hold its annual awards night on June 30 with top student-athletes from basketball, volleyball, and, for the first time, football getting their recognitions. Leading the honor roll is the Collegiate Men's and Women's Basketball Player of the Year after successful editions of both NCAA Season 100 and UAAP Season 87 while men's and women's mythical teams will also be handed out awards. Athletes from volleyball will also get their spotlight with UAAP Men's and Women's Volleyball Players of the Year and NCAA Men's and Women's Volleyball Players of the year. In a historic move, the CPC has expanded its recognition to football with top performers in UAAP men's and women's football as well as NCAA men's football getting their due honors. Aside from the players, coaches in both basketball and volleyball will also be acknowledged for steering these young stars to the top. 'We owe it to the student-athletes to continue to glorify their unwavering efforts, with football players in the spotlight this time around. EAC upsets Perpetual for third win in a row in Filoil preseason action
Red-hot Emilio Aguinaldo College claimed another scalp after upsetting University of the Perpetual Help System DALTA with a convincing 77-52 win in the 18th Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup on Monday. The Generals rode on the steady shooting of Brianne Angeles, Joshua Tolentino, and Jon Cudiamat to race to their third straight win and hike their record to 5-1, tying De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde at second spot. Angeles top-scored with 12 points laced with four rebounds and one assist while Tolentino and Cudiamat each chipped in 11 markers as the Generals continued to prove that they're a legit title contender come NCAA Season 101. 'Ever since naman, naniniwala kami na kaya naming maging contender. Ang maganda lang is nagde-deliver na yung mga bata sa sistema namin," EAC head coach Jerson Cabiltes said. EAC, which narrowly missed a Final Four spot last Season 100 due to a 9-9 record, was off to a hot start against the struggling Perpetual with Tolentino and other key vets in Kyle Ochavo and Nicole Quinal leading their first quarter barrage, 24-11.
