Red-hot Emilio Aguinaldo College claimed another scalp after upsetting University of the Perpetual Help System DALTA with a convincing 77-52 win in the 18th Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup on Monday.
The Generals rode on the steady shooting of Brianne Angeles, Joshua Tolentino, and Jon Cudiamat to race to their third straight win and hike their record to 5-1, tying De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde at second spot.
Angeles top-scored with 12 points laced with four rebounds and one assist while Tolentino and Cudiamat each chipped in 11 markers as the Generals continued to prove that they're a legit title contender come NCAA Season 101.
'Ever since naman, naniniwala kami na kaya naming maging contender. Ang maganda lang is nagde-deliver na yung mga bata sa sistema namin," EAC head coach Jerson Cabiltes said.
EAC, which narrowly missed a Final Four spot last Season 100 due to a 9-9 record, was off to a hot start against the struggling Perpetual with Tolentino and other key vets in Kyle Ochavo and Nicole Quinal leading their first quarter barrage, 24-11.
It was all EAC since then with Jethro Bacud even sending them to a 26-point cushion after his layup midway in the fourth period, 70-44.
The loss, meanwhile, sent the ALTAs to a 1-4 slate. Only Patrick Sleat could come up with a double-digit production after the former FEU standout posted 10 points.
Before this game, EAC had also frustrated defending champion Mapua University, 71-64, before pulling off a tight 75-71 escape victory against Jose Rizal University.

Kungfu Reyes named new head coach of rebuilding San Beda Lady Red Spikers

NCAA By BEA MICALLER,GMA Integrated News From tigers' lair to the lions' den. Kungfu Reyes is bringing his coaching brilliance to Mendiola after being tapped to be the new head coach of San Beda University women's volleyball team. The school announced the development on Saturday as the Lady Red Spikers try to revive their program following years of consecutive Final Four misses in the NCAA. Reyes, who recently dropped his women's coaching duty with University of Santo Tomas to focus on being the program director, now became the fifth head coach of San Beda in the last five seasons. Nemesio Gavino called the shots when the league returned after the pandemic in Season 97 before he was replaced by Ariel Dela Cruz in Season 98. Dela Cruz didn't last long either after San Beda tapped renowned tactician Edgar Barroga in Season 99 until the latter was let go midway through Season 100. Joshua Noda then came in as the interim head coach, leading the Lady Red Spikers to a 4-14 win-loss record finish in the centennial edition. Reyes will inherit a core led by incoming third-year outside spiker Angel Habacon alongside Janelle Bachar, Rianne Bedural, and Patricia Hiponia as San Beda looks to restore its winning ways. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

(Photo: Filoil EcoOil Sports/FB) Colegio de San Juan de Letran is proving that it has returned to its lethal state, clinching the quarterfinals spot in the 18th Filoil EcoOil Preseason Cup after 75-68 win over San Sebastian College-Recoletos on Friday. The Knights became the first team to book a playoff ticket as they improved to 7-1, good for solo lead in the NCAA bracket while the Stags remained winless at 0-8. Deo Cuajao continued to lead the Knights with 11 points while Jimboy Estrada and Jonathan Manalili each poured in 10 markers with the former also grabbing seven rebounds, two assists, and one block to lift the former three-time NCAA champions. But even with the win and a quarterfinals seat, incoming second-year Letran head coach Allen Ricardo stressed the Knights still have plenty of work to do moving forward. "Although we won the game, shaky on both ends, offense and defense. Hindi ko nakita 'yung tamang attitude at body language," said Ricardo. In other games, Arellano University and University of Perpetual Help System DALTA gutted out wins to bolster their respective campaigns. The Chiefs squeaked past defending NCAA champion Mapua University with a nail-biting 76-73 win behind the heroics of guard T-mc Ongotan. Ongotan buried a triple that turned a slim 72-71 lead to a four-point advantage for the Chiefs in the final two minutes of the fourth period. But veteran Mapua guard Cyrus Cuenco responded with a layup off a Marc Igliane assist to cut the gap to two, 75-73. Ongotan then split his charities following a foul from Yam Concepcion, sealing it for an Arellano side that was coming off a two-point loss to surging Emilio Aguinaldo College. Perpetual, on the other hand, banked on a game-winning basket of Patrick Sleat to eke out a 65-64 win against Jose Rizal University. The former FEU standout buried a clutch floater with 29 seconds left to hand the ALTAs their second straight victory after a tough 1-4 start in the tournament. In the UAAP side of things, Far Eastern University turned to a big double-double outing from big man Mo Konateh in surviving Adamson University in overtime, 68-66. Konateh erupted for 23 points and 20 rebounds laced with three assists, four blocks, and two steals as the Tamaraws forced a two-way tie at second spot with UST at 3-1. —JKC, GMA Integrated News

Surging EAC grabs share of lead with escape vs. Arellano; Mapua, Perpetual gut out wins

Emilio Aguinaldo College narrowly escaped a determined Arellano University with a 66-64 win on Wednesday to extend its winning streak and grab a share of top spot in the 18th Filoil Preseason Cup. The Generals wasted a 12-point lead, but restored order in the endgame thanks to clutch baskets from holdovers Brianne Angeles and Nicole Quinal to surge to their fourth straight wins for a 6-1 card. More importantly, EAC forced a tie at the top with Colegio de San Juan de Letran. Down one in the final minute, Angeles completed a layup off a dish from rookie EJ Castillo, making up for a missed three-pointer in the previous play to give EAC a slim 65-64 lead. Quinal then split his free throws after forcing a foul from King Vinoya to seal it for the Generals. Quinal top-scored EAC with 15 points while Jude Bagay and Ruzzelle Dominguez posted 11 and 10 markers each as the Generals continued to make its case as a title contender ahead of NCAA Season 101. In other games, Mapua University and University of Perpetual Help System DALTA took care of their jobs against Jose Rizal University and San Sebastian College-Recoletos, respectively. The defending champions Cardinals relied on an all-around outing from graduating Clint Escamis to pull off a 76-68 win against the rebuilding Heavy Bombers. Escamis posted 13 points, seven assists, and three rebounds to help Mapua improve to 4-2 while Cyril Gonzales churned out a team-high 21 markers together with four rebounds, two dimes, and two steals. Perpetual, on the other hand, halted a three-game slide by eking out a 75-61 win against the Stags behind near double-double showing from debuting transferee Patrick Sleat. The former FEU star poured in 13 points, nine rebounds, six assists, and two steals while sophomore Mark Gojo Cruz supplied the help with 12 markers, six boards, and two dimes as they hiked their card to 2-4. —JKC, GMA Integrated News
