Trump may make your next bottle of champagne or wine a lot more expensive
President Donald Trump's latest bid to tackle the European Union's 'hostile and abusive' trading practices is to tack new duties on alcohol imports. Not only would that make European wine more expensive for consumers, but it could devastate the restaurant business.
In response to Trump's tariffs on steel and aluminum, the E.U. hiked its duties on imports of American whiskey to 50%, in a move that the Distilled Spirits Council of the United States called 'deeply disappointing.' That set off Trump's new threat.
'If this Tariff is not removed immediately, the U.S. will shortly place a 200% Tariff on all wines, champagnes, & alcoholic products coming out of France and other E.U. represented countries,' Trump wrote on his Truth Social, saying that U.S. businesses will benefit.
A tariff is a tax on an imported good and paid for by the importing business, not the foreign seller. They're designed as a protective measure that encourages domestic companies to shift manufacturing back to the U.S. and consumers to buy 'Made in America' products.

But wine and other alcohol products aren't able to be mixed and matched as easily as other goods, such as steel. Ninety-five percent of the world's bourbon is made in Kentucky. Champagne can only be called champagne if it is made in France, uses a certain method, and is from the region of Champagne.
'Chardonnay grown in the soil of Chablis produces a wine that cannot be recreated anywhere on earth. The same can be said for Nebbiolo in Piedmont, Pinot Noir in Burgundy or Tempranillo in Rioja,' Harmon Skurnik, a member of the U.S. Wine Trade Alliance, told Wine Spectator.
After Trump imposed tariffs on wine during his first term, many companies absorbed some of the cost to avoid raising prices and potentially losing customers. But fewer people are drinking alcohol these days, resulting in last year becoming one of the 'most challenging years in collective memory' for the beverage alcohol industry, according to the Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of America's (WSWA).
Wine consumption peaked in 2021 at 3.16 gallons per person, with per capita consumption dropping 15% to 2.68 gallons by 2023, according to data from the U.S. Wine Institute. By volume, wines and spirit sales dropped 7.2% and 3.7%, respectively, in 2024 according to WSWA's SipSource report. Revenue sank 4.8% overall for wine and spirits sellers last year.
If enacted, Trump's new tariffs could result in price hikes for consumers at liquor and grocery stores and put pressure on the restaurant business. Most restaurateurs make 50% to 60% of their profit on wine and drinks.
'Restaurants are run at ridiculously low margins, like 3% on average, and when one of our better profit-making products is taken off the table, I don't know where we'll make it up,' DeWayne Schaaf, chef and owner of Celebrations, a fine dining restaurant in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, told Quartz in November.
'A lot of people are going to have to pivot: lose wine, lose staff or close days,' he said.

Jets owner Woody Johnson buys 43% stake in English soccer club Crystal Palace
LONDON (AP) — New York Jets owner Woody Johnson is finally set to get his hands on an English soccer team. Premier League side Crystal Palace announced on Monday that Johnson has signed 'a legally binding contract' to buy the shares of fellow American John Textor, who has a 43% stake in the London club. 'Whilst the completion is pending approval from the Premier League and Women's Super League, we do not envisage any issues and look forward to welcoming Woody as a partner and director of the club,' Palace said in a statement. 'We would like to go on record to thank John Textor for his contribution over the past four years and wish him every success for the future.' Johnson submitted a bid to buy Chelsea in 2022 but was unsuccessful. The sale of Textor's shares boosts Palace's hopes of playing in the Europa League next season, having qualified thanks to its FA Cup final victory over Manchester City last month. Textor is also a shareholder in French side Lyon, which is set to enter the same competition, and under UEFA multi-club ownership rules, it looked as if Palace could miss out. ___

White House tries to find messaging balance on Trump's regime change comment
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on Monday sought to explain President Donald Trump's comment suggesting he's open to regime change in Iran, saying that the president 'believes the Iranian people can control their own destiny.' 'If the Iranian regime refuses to come to a peaceful, diplomatic solution, which the president is still interested and engaging in by the way, why shouldn't the Iranian people take away the power of this incredibly violent regime that has been suppressing them for decades?' Leavitt told Fox and Friends. She continued, 'Our posture has not changed. Our military posture has not changed. These were decisive precision strikes that were successful on Saturday evening. But the president is just simply raising a good question that many people around the world are asking.' Over the weekend, the U.S. bombed three Iranian nuclear sites — Fordow, Natanz and Esfahan — entering a conflict between Israel and Tehran just days after Trump said he would make a decision about joining the conflict in two weeks. Though administration officials have repeatedly said the White House did not strike the Iranian nuclear sites to bring about a regime change in the country, Trump floated the idea in a social media post. He did not, however, directly call for a change in Iranian leadership. 'It's not politically correct to use the term, 'Regime Change,' but if the current Iranian Regime is unable to MAKE IRAN GREAT AGAIN, why wouldn't there be a Regime change??? MIGA!!!' Trump said in a Truth Social post over the weekend. A White House official, granted anonymity to discuss the administration's stance, told POLITICO that if the Iranian people were to rise up against the current regime, Trump is not saying the U.S. would contribute — but they also said Trump isn't saying the U.S. wouldn't contribute. 'He's just saying the Iranian people control their own destiny and why wouldn't there be a regime change if the regime is refusing to do what's right by their people,' the official added. Leavitt also told ABC News on Monday that the administration is 'confident' the U.S. bombers 'completely and totally obliterated' all of Iran's nuclear sites. 'The President wouldn't have launched the strikes if we weren't confident in that,' she said. 'So this operation was a resounding success, and administration officials agree with that as well as Israel.' On Sunday, Vice President JD Vance said on NBC's Meet the Press that the strikes on Iran 'substantially delayed their development of a nuclear weapon. And that was the goal of this attack.' Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has advocated for a change in Iranian leadership throughout his career. In recent weeks, Netanyahu has urged the U.S. to join its war against Iran if America wants to remain safe. Iran has already vowed retaliation for the strikes, worrying some about the safety of Americans in the region as well. But the White House official told POLITICO that 'immense preparations' were taken pre-strike to minimize American troops in the region in case of retaliation. On Monday, Leavitt said that the strikes were necessary to keep Americans both in the U.S. and the Middle East safe. 'Just to be clear, this strike on Saturday did make our homeland safer because it took away Iran's ability to create a nuclear bomb,' Leavitt said on Fox. 'This is a regime that threatens death to America and death to Israel and they no longer have the capability to build this nuclear weapon and threaten the world.'
