Nothing Phone 3 to get 7 years of software updates, launch set for July 1

India Today4 days ago

Ahead of the launch, Nothing has confirmed that the Phone 3 will be powered by a Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 chip. However, this has not been taken well by the audience. It has been quite some time since the company began discussing the upcoming Phone 3 and has been describing it as "a true flagship". Now, if it is a flagship, shouldn't it feature a high-end chipset? For instance, Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite chip. With this revelation, several questions are stuck in the mind. Starting with, if it does not feature a premium chipset, how will CEO Carl Pei justify the $799 price tag? Secondly, if not the chipset, then what is so flagship-like in the upcoming Phone 3? While these questions will only be answered once we have more information, to put some perspective into it, Nothing co-founder Akis Evangelidis has confirmed that Nothing Phone 3 will get 7 years of software updates.
advertisementAfter Nothing revealed the chipset, an X (formerly known as Twitter) user asked why the company chose Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 and not 8 Gen 3. Replying to this query, Evangelidis said that while the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip has a weaker GPU, NPU, connectivity and ISP, and comes with a software support of just 4 years, the upcoming Nothing Phone 3 powered by Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chip will have 7 years of software updates and 5 years of security updates.Nothing Phone 3: Launch dateAfter nearly two years of anticipation, Nothing is finally ready to reveal its next flagship, the Phone 3, which is officially set to launch on July 1, 2025. The London-based tech brand has kept fans waiting since the release of the Phone 2 back in July 2023. Over the past year, Nothing has broadened its portfolio considerably. It made notable strides in the mid-range space with the introduction of the Phone 2a series, followed more recently by the Phone 3a. The brand also dipped its toes into the budget segment with its CMF sub-brand, which now includes devices like the CMF Phone 1 and Phone 2 Pro, along with a collection of affordable audio gear.advertisement
Yet, despite all this diversification, a true flagship successor to the Phone 2 has remained conspicuously absent, until now. The Phone 3 promises to fill that gap, marking Nothing's return to the premium smartphone arena this July.Nothing Phone 3: Price expectationsPei recently hinted at a premium pricing approach for the upcoming Nothing Phone 3, suggesting a possible price point of around 800 during an appearance on The Android Show: I/O Edition. That figure converts to nearly Rs 90,000, a substantial leap from the Rs 44,999 starting price of the Phone 2 at launch in India.Globally, the Phone 3 is expected to carry price tags of $799 and $899, which translate to approximately Rs 68,000 and Rs 77,000, respectively. However, Indian pricing typically undercuts international rates, especially those seen in European and UK markets. That brings us to a crucial question, how much will it actually cost in India? While Pei's comments indicate a shift towards a more high-end price tier, it's unlikely the brand will go as far as nearly doubling the price for its core Indian audience. A sudden jump of Rs 45,000 could risk alienating Nothing's loyal community, which has come to expect a balance of design, innovation, and affordability.A more probable scenario would place the Indian price closer to Rs 60,000 to Rs 65,000, positioning the Phone 3 as a direct rival to recent premium mid-range entries like Google's Pixel 9a (Rs 49,999) and Apple's iPhone 16e (Rs 59,900). Should Nothing opt for this more strategic pricing, the Phone 3 could hit the sweet spot, offering flagship-grade features without straying into ultra-premium territory.

IITMS pilot signals fail to deliver promised results

1 2 3 4 5 6 Nagpur: The much-anticipated Integrated Intelligent Traffic Management System (IITMS) in Nagpur has failed to deliver the expected results. Although the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) initially announced the pilot's launch by June 15, it has now pushed the date further to June 25, following repeated glitches in system performance during test runs. As part of the pilot, the civic body installed new traffic signals and high-resolution cameras at 10 major junctions across the city to test the core features of the Rs 197-crore state-funded IITMS project. These junctions were equipped with modern signal systems, surveillance units, and electronic infrastructure meant to streamline traffic flow, monitor violations, and reduce congestion. "However, the early outcomes have been far from encouraging. The signals and surveillance network are not functioning reliably. After the hardware was installed, communication and coordination issues between the signals, control room, and field devices prevented the system from operating seamlessly," confirmed a senior NMC official privy to the development. NMC has formally communicated its dissatisfaction to the contractor responsible for the implementation. The city traffic police too have flagged multiple concerns, ranging from erratic signal synchronisation to system lags in transmitting real-time data to the control room. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo In response, the implementing company has been directed to address the technical shortcomings without further delay. The IITMS, once fully operational, is expected to offer multiple benefits — including adaptive traffic signalling, violation detection, real-time CCTV surveillance, and integration with the city police and NMC control rooms. The system's biggest promise lies in its ability to automatically detect violations such as red-light jumping, helmetless riding, and speeding, while also helping to manage peak-hour congestion. Despite these ambitious goals, the on-ground situation tells a different story. The pilot project, which should have been a showcase for smart traffic management, has instead become a point of concern for authorities already battling public criticism over rising violations and worsening traffic conditions. According to sources, the electric department has also raised concerns over technical integration and electricity supply stability, which are affecting signal performance. Meanwhile, messages and displays on the new signal poles have attracted public curiosity, but the system itself remains non-functional.

KSRTC's Davanagere division records uptick in digital payments

Davanagere: The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation ( KSRTC ) achieved notable success in digital payments, collecting Rs 10 crore in eight months through its Davanagere division. This achievement follows KSRTC's intensified promotion of UPI payments since Nov 2024. The organisation aims to collect Rs 1 crore daily through digital means, targeting 50% of all transactions. Passengers embraced the QR code payment system for bus fares, despite initial technical difficulties. The digital payment implementation resolved issues related to small change, enhancing the travel experience and reducing conflicts between passengers and conductors. The Davanagere division also introduced UPI payments via smart electronic ticket machines (ETMs) in Nov. Travellers now complete transactions using applications like PhonePe and Google Pay. Digital payments are more prevalent on long-distance routes with reliable network coverage. Inter-district and interstate services show higher digital transaction rates when compared to urban and rural routes. City passengers display less inclination towards UPI payments for smaller fares. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Sanitize & Smooth Clothes Fast with Philips Steamer Philips Garment Steamers Shop Now Undo Premium service users typically book tickets online in advance. From Nov 2024 to June 15, 2025, the division collected Rs 11 crore via UPI across its three depots: Davanagere Depot-1, Davanagere Depot-2, and Harihar Depot. Monthly collections increased steadily: November (Rs 29.2 lakh), December 2024 (Rs 1 crore), January 2025 (Rs 1.3 crore), February (Rs 1.5 crore), March (Rs 1.6 crore), April (Rs 1.8 crore), May (Rs 1.9 crore), and June (Rs 1.9 crore). The division manages 404 buses with 490 ETMs, including backup units. Occasional technical issues led to payment deductions without ticket issuance, causing disputes. The refund system improved, with reimbursements now processed within 48 hours, reduced from one week previously. Passengers are showing a preference for digital payments, and if a ticket is not printed, the amount is credited to their account within 24 hours. We solved some technical issues, and we are expecting more digital payments in our division, said Kiran Kumar Basapur, KSRTC divisional controller, Davanagere.
