Autoimmune Association comes into being, with focus on awareness, research and empowerment

SARA ALZAABI (ABU DHABI)In a significant medical and humanitarian achievement for the UAE, the Autoimmune Association (AIA) has officially launched with the aim of supporting patients, raising community awareness, and developing research and studies in this vital medical field.The charitable and voluntary association, the first of its kind in the Arab world and the fourth globally, affirms the UAE's commitment to improving quality of life, especially in the Year of Community.The association was founded at the initiative of Dr. Eman Al Hashimi, Founder and Chairperson of the Board of Directors and an award-winning Emirati composer, and comprises 17 founding members, including doctors, researchers, writers, artists interested in improving the quality of life in the Emirati community. The association is sponsored by the Department of Community Development – Abu Dhabi, under the umbrella of the Ministry of Community Empowerment, and in cooperation with numerous government agencies across the UAE.In a recent interview with the Aletihad, Dr. Al Hashimi said that offering creative outlets can enhance the emotional and psychological wellbeing of those affected by autoimmune conditions, ultimately improving their quality of life. Dr. Al Hashimi said she founded the AIA to provide support and education for individuals with autoimmune conditions, addressing challenges such as emotional toll and lack of understanding, which she personally witnessed.One of the core values of the AIA is to advocate for greater awareness and education about autoimmune diseases.'My experience has highlighted the urgent need for greater awareness and education about autoimmune diseases... my colleagues and I are driven to advocate for increased visibility and education, helping to break down misconceptions,' she said.Dr. Al Hashimi stressed that the AIA is committed to addressing challenges faced by people with autoimmune diseases, mainly difficulty in managing symptoms, lack of community support, and delays in diagnosis.'Individuals with autoimmune conditions encounter a variety of challenges that can significantly impact their daily lives. One of the most pressing issues is the complexity of managing their conditions, which often involves navigating a range of symptoms that can vary widely from day to day,' she added.'Our association is dedicated to addressing these challenges through a collaborative and human-centred approach. We focus on education and awareness campaigns to inform both the public and healthcare providers about autoimmune diseases, helping to foster a supportive environment," Dr. Al Hashimi said.
She added that the AIA plans to integrate medical, artistic, and community-driven initiatives to raise public awareness of autoimmune diseases through workshops, events, and campaigns.

UAE scores high on Social Progress Index with top marks in housing, healthcare
20 June 2025 02:32 KHALED AL KHAWALDEH (ABU DHABI) The UAE has once again demonstrated its commitment to social development as it secured impressive scores on the recently released Social Progress Index (SPI) Global Report 2025. It stood out in several categories including housing and healthcare. With an overall score of 74.04 out of 100, the UAE ranked second in the Arab world, and 49th out of 170 nations across the globe. This marks a significant improvement for the country, which has climbed seven places since 2011. The annual index measures how well countries meet the social and environmental needs of their people, beyond just economic factors like GDP. It assesses nations across three key areas: basic human needs, foundations of wellbeing, and opportunity, covering indicators such as health, education, safety, rights, and environmental UAE achieved top-tier performances in housing and healthcare, scoring 96.35 in housing, securing some of the highest global marks in this category. It boasted 100% access to electricity, universal use of clean fuels and technology for cooking, and zero household air pollution, factors SPI said were critical indicators of quality living standards. The UAE also ranked an impressive 7th globally for the affordability of housing, underscoring its efforts to ensure residents can access safe and affordable the country scored highly in water and sanitation, achieving an overall score of 96.54 and placing 12th globally. The country was found to deliver 100% of its population with basic water service and excelled in providing basic sanitation services. Healthcare was another bright spot where the UAE attained a score of 73.32, with notable strengths in areas such as equal access to essential health services and low prevalence of non-communicable diseases. The country's life expectancy at 65 and its ranking of 14th for equal access to quality healthcare signalled a well-developed healthcare system that serves both nationals and residents housing and healthcare, the UAE performed well in other pillars of social progress. It ranked 14th globally in basic education, with high primary school enrolment and high scores in gender parity in secondary attainment. Its information and communications infrastructure were graded as robust, with full marks for internet users and mobile telephone users, while access to online governance services ranked 37th worldwide. On the safety front, the UAE recorded a score of 78.22, with relatively low levels of interpersonal violence and good perceptions of personal safety, indicated by its 7th rank globally for feelings of safety when walking alone.

Abu Dhabi's Barakatna initiative empowers caregivers to benefit from flexible work systems, ensure care of parents
16 June 2025 18:28 ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD)As part of the Barakatna initiative, launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, the Family Development Foundation (FDF) and the Department of Government Enablement – Abu Dhabi (DGE), in collaboration with the Department of Community Development – Abu Dhabi (DCD), have announced the provision of a service that allows caregivers of parents an opportunity to benefit from flexible work initiative seeks to empower caregivers to access the flexible systems, and strengthen the role of children in supporting and caring for senior citizens. Mariam Mohammed Al Rumaithi, Director-General of Family Development Foundation, highlighted FDF's commitment towards senior citizens' welfare, stating that extensive efforts are being made to ensure their stability and quality of life. The efforts also aim to ensure that caregivers of senior citizens can fulfill their social and professional roles, and balance their personal, professional, and social responsibilities. Mariam Mohammed Al Rumaithi said, 'Home care requires commitment and special attention, and we are working on providing the necessary regulations to support this responsibility, including the presence of a dedicated nurse for senior citizens, along with ongoing coordination with employers.'Ibrahim Nasser, Undersecretary of the Department of Government Enablement, said: 'We are proud to be part of this inspiring humanitarian initiative, which aims to develop regulatory human resources policies within the Abu Dhabi Government, and empower employees to fulfil their family responsibilities without compromising their professional performance.'Ibrahim Nasser noted that this initiative helps foster a flexible work environment, and achieve a balanced personal and professional life, positively impacting employee wellbeing and the sustainability of government Al Blooshi, Director of the Strategic Planning and Institutional Development Department at FDF, emphasised that the service allows individuals to apply for a Primary Caregiver Certificate, which reaffirms their role in providing social services to one or both parents classified as senior certificate enables caregivers to obtain approval from their employer to benefit from the flexible work systems, in line with the stipulated regulations and Al Blooshi said one of the key conditions is that the employee must be working at a government entity within Abu Dhabi, and that the senior citizen's health condition requires continuous in-home care, based on a medical report issued by a licensed healthcare facility in Abu Dhabi that is dated no more than three Mohammed Al Ali, Director of Family Development at FDF, highlighted that applicants' parents must be Emirati senior citizens aged 60 and older, in accordance with the National Policy for Senior Citizens. The applicant must be a first-degree relative - son or daughter,reside with the senior citizen permanently in the same household, and be the primary caregiver. It is also required that the applicant holds a Family Book issued in Abu Dhabi, and resides permanently in the Mohammed Al Ali said to receive approval to benefit from the flexible work systems for caregivers of their parents, applicants must use a digital ID to log into the TAMM platform, submit the requisite application and documents, receive an application confirmation, schedule a home visit by FDF, and be notified of the social assessment visit date. Candidates can obtain their Primary Caregiver Certificate after successfully passing the evaluation. This step comes as part of the Abu Dhabi Government's ongoing efforts to enhance the quality of life for senior citizens ,and provide practical solutions for Emirati families, enabling them to balance their family roles without compromising their professional responsibilities.
