Lions make Kerby Joseph highest-paid safety in NFL history with 4-year, $86 million extension
Kerby Joseph established himself as one of the NFL's top safeties last season. He is about to be paid like it.
The Detroit Lions safety agreed to a four-year, $86 million contract extension, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, a deal that will make Joseph the highest-paid safety in NFL history. The previous high watermark was Tampa Bay Buccaneers standout Antoine Winfield Jr. with four years, $84.1 million.
Joseph is coming off a 2024 season that saw him earn first-team All-Pro honors. The 24-year-old led the league in interceptions with nine, and also has an NFL-best 17 since entering the league in 2022.
The Lions selected Joseph out of Illinois in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft, and he's been a key part of the team's rise ever since.
Who else are the Lions going to pay big this offseason? As Rapoport notes, the Lions have said they are planning to ensure they keep star defensive end Aidan Hutchinson for a long time.

Steelers hint at new Terrible Towel, special announcement coming next week
Steelers fans may soon get a glimpse at the 50th anniversary edition of the Terrible Towel — as a special announcement is coming next week. The official Steelers Pro Shop teased that a reveal is coming, posting an image on social media of what appears to be a close-up of the 50th anniversary 2025 Terrible Towel. Back in May, Steelers President Art Rooney II claimed a new throwback jersey was set to be revealed in July, and also hinted at a 'little celebration' for the 50th anniversary of the Terrible Towel. Advertisement The Steelers debuted the Terrible Towel on December 27, 1975, in a playoff matchup against the Baltimore Colts, and it has since become a larger-than-life symbol of Pittsburgh sports — evident by its journeys to unbelievable locations such as Mt. Everest and space. For up-to-date Steelers coverage, follow us on X @TheSteelersWire and give our Facebook page a like. Bills Praised For 'Home Run' Offseason
Bills Praised For 'Home Run' Offseason originally appeared on Athlon Sports. When it comes to assessing the Buffalo Bills' offseason, most gravitate to the things they haven't done - like extend James Cook. Advertisement However, it is worth noting that the franchise has done a great deal of good over the past couple of months, both by signing key free agents and by re-signing their young talent. Yes, we get it with Cook, but we also can't overlook how this roster is constructed and that a lot of young, promising talent have seen their futures be pledged to Buffalo. For SI's Matt Verderame, in his good, bad, and ugly from the 2025 offseason, Beane's ability to get most key players re-signed is definitely a positive. "This offseason, general manager Brandon Beane extended a slew of his younger, homegrown players, including corner Christian Benford, receiver Khalil Shakir, linebacker Terrel Bernard and edge rusher Gregory Rousseau," Verderame writes. "There's not a single Pro Bowl or All-Pro nod between the quartet, but each is a rising star at his position and Beane got them all on good deals. Advertisement "The only remaining question in this realm is running back James Cook, who has a year left on his rookie deal. Cook led the league with 16 rushing touchdowns in 2024 but is still slated for free agency. If Cook re-signs at some point, that's another home run for Beane and the Bills." © Tina MacIntyre-Yee/Democrat and Chronicle / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images With a host of key players now locked away, the Bills can look forward to what they hope will be a 2025 season that ends in Josh Allen hoisting the Lombardi Trophy. Yes, Cook and his contract saga have taken the edge off what has been a fruitful offseason, but there have been good strides made elsewhere with the roster. Advertisement None of the contract extensions were ridiculous in terms of money, so the Bills will be in a good spot, salary cap-wise, down the line. But while those deals were "home runs," there is still one more that must be done. Somehow, someway, figure out a deal for Mr. Cook, and this 2025 would have been as close to perfect for Buffalo as you can get. Jayden Daniels' Commanders Offense Predicted to Be a 'Juggernaut' With One Major 'If'
Jayden Daniels' Commanders Offense Predicted to Be a 'Juggernaut' With One Major 'If' originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Washington Commanders will be looking to improve on their 2024 season, which, on the face of it, will be challenging to do. Advertisement A 12-5 regular season, winning two playoff games, and making it to the NFC title game is a high bar to reach in Year 2 for Jayden Daniels, but that is what is in front of Dan Quinn's Commanders. However, two key signings in Deebo Samuel and Laremy Tunsil will hopefully provide the offense with some firepower at two key positions, to round out what is, on paper, an electric offense. But for Bucky Brooks, he thinks the Commanders' offense can be a juggernaut in 2025 ... if one certain situation gets resolved. "It's hard to improve from good to great in the NFL, but the Commanders might join the league's elites with an improved roster that features more blue-chip players around 2024 Offensive Rookie of the Year Jayden Daniels," Brooks wrote. "The trades for Laremy Tunsil and Deebo Samuel place a pair of Pro Bowl-caliber players in marquee positions (left tackle and WR2) that should help the offense unlock another gear in 2025. Advertisement "If the team can resolve Terry McLaurin's contract situation, the Commanders will have a chance to open the season with an electric offense that will put plenty of stress on defensive coordinators crafting plans to stop the juggernaut." Now, everyone has their idea of what might happen, and a $30 million APY contract could be forthcoming, but the longer this saga drags out, the messier it becomes. And for a franchise that was the feel-good story of 2024, that isn't ideal. Nor is it to have your best offensive weapon not even take a snap in OTAs to minicamp. Advertisement Washington has all the pieces to be a top offense in 2025, but it won't be without its No. 1 weapon.
