5 things to know about new Boston Bruins coach

Marco Sturm is coming back to TD Garden.
After an exhaustive search, the former Bruins forward has been named the franchise's 30th head coach. Boston was the final team to fill their head coaching vacancy this offseason.

'I'm incredibly honored to be named head coach of the Boston Bruins,' Sturm said in a statement. 'I want to thank Charlie Jacobs and the Jacobs family, Cam Neely, and Don Sweeney for trusting me with this opportunity. Boston has always held a special place in my heart, and I know how much this team means to the city and to our fans. I've felt that passion as a player, and I can't wait to be behind the bench and feel it again. I'm excited to get to work and do everything I can to help this team succeed.'
Here are five things to know about the first-time NHL head coach with 938 games under his belt as a player:
1. Sturm wasn't one-goal wonder in Boston
While he appears on most Bruins highlight reels scoring the 2010 Winter Classic overtime clincher at Fenway Park, Sturm's career in Boston was far more expansive than one game-winning goal.

A piece of the return in 2005's stunning Joe Thornton trade, Sturm spent five seasons in Boston, scoring more than 20 goals four times. He played on Patrice Bergeron's left wing in the center's early days and finished with 106 goals in 302 games as a Bruin.
'As a former Bruin, he understands what this team means to the city and our fans,' general manager Don Sweeney said. 'We're embracing a new direction with Marco behind the bench and are confident his energy, standards, and commitment to a competitive, hard-nosed brand of hockey reflect exactly what Bruins hockey should be.'
2. He has been coaching the Ontario Reign
Though he doesn't have NHL head coaching experience, Sturm has spent the past three seasons behind the bench for Ontario, the Kings' AHL affiliate, posting a 119-80-11-6 record. The 46-year-old led the Reign to postseason berths in all three seasons, winning one playoff series. Last season Sturm coached former Bruins prospect Jack Studnicka (16 goals, 29 assists) in Ontario.
3. Sturm comes from defensive-minded Kings system
The Bruins have made it no secret they're looking for a defense-first approach, and Sturm comes from a Kings franchise that's notorious for being defensive-minded. He spent 2018-2022 as an assistant in Los Angeles before his promotion to Ontario.

'Throughout this process, our goal was to identify a coach who could uphold our strong defensive foundation while helping us evolve offensively,' Sweeney said. 'We were also looking for a communicator and leader – someone who connects with players, develops young talent, and earns the respect of the room. Marco impressed us at every step with his preparation, clarity, and passion.
4. Germany-native has coached internationally
A native of Dingolfing, Sturm played for the German national team in international tournaments and has coached it, too. The Germans won a silver medal under Sturm at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics, and he's coached them three times (2016-18) in the IIHF World Championships, too.
5. Sturm was once Germany's scoring leader
With 487 career points (242 goals and 245 assists), Sturm was the most prolific German scorer of all-time until Oilers phenom Leon Draisaitl came along. Draisaitl broke Sturm's mark in 2021 and has since obliterated it playing alongside Connor McDavid.

'Of course, this is a great honor for me. We have some great hockey players who come from Germany. To top this list means a lot to me,' Draisaitl said after breaking the record.

📊 What the stats say from Bayern's narrow CWC win over Boca

📊 What the stats say from Bayern's narrow CWC win over Boca Bayern Munich and Boca Juniors clashed in a gripping FIFA Club World Cup Group C encounter, with Vincent Kompany's men edging out the iconic Argentine club with a 2‑1 win. Goals from Harry Kane (18') and Michael Olise (84') on either side of a potential goal of the tournament effort from Miguel Merentiel sealed all three points on the night. Advertisement Despite the favourable scoreline for the Bundesliga behemoth, a deeper dive into the underlying data reveals both dominance as well as unexpected resistance. Here's what the stats say from the entertaining night in South Florida. Expected Goals Imbalance - Bayern's underlying numbers showcased their attacking potency. With an xG hitting 4.57 compared to a mere 0.67 from Boca, the right club won simply by the data. Such a large xG gap reflects the imbalance in chance creation: Bayern crafted high-quality opportunities throughout, whereas Boca relied on a moment of individual brilliance from Miguel Merentiel to break through in a moment indicative of the overall tactical approach from Miguel Ángel Russo. It would ultimately not be enough to snuff out Kompany's men. Advertisement Possession and Passing - The Bavarians controlled the midfield with a commanding 72.6 % possession share—a testament to the tactical approach and ball dominance that we typically see from them, and why Russo was happy to try to hit them on the break. Bayern also piled up over 600 total passes while completing 93% compared to Boca's 73% and a paltry 27.4 % possession. While most clubs have to revert to being direct against Bayern, Boca lacked creativity when it mattered. Shots and Shots on Target - Bayern attempted 11 shots, with 4 finding the target. Boca registered 6 shots, 3 on target. This relatively respectable efficiency from Boca reflects their opportunistic counter‑attacks—half of their shots were on frame, including the equaliser by Merentiel. Meanwhile, Bayern's ratio (36 % on target) hints at less composure in front of goal than their xG would suggest, and when added to their six big chances on the night, they fell short of their usual goalscoring ways. The stats reveal a tale of two halves for Boca Juniors: a disciplined, reactive performance, grounded in efficiency and resilience. Bayern, by contrast, delivered midfield dominance and creative output, yet didn't translate dominance into a high-scoring display, highlighted by five big chances missed on the night. Phoenix Suns, Boston Celtics Linked After Recent Kevin Durant Trade Report

Phoenix Suns, Boston Celtics Linked After Recent Kevin Durant Trade Report originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Phoenix Suns have yet to strike a Kevin Durant trade, though that deal could come any day now. Advertisement The 15-time All-Star was nearly moved by the franchise at the most recent trade deadline, which all but confirmed an eventual divorce between the two sides. Durant's preferred destinations are the Houston Rockets, San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat -- though the Suns have made it clear they are making the best decision for the franchise. With this, the Minnesota Timberwolves and Toronto Raptors remain options for Durant to be traded to. There could be another dark horse suitor, too. Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum ruptured his Achilles, which will lead to the 2024 champions playing next season without their superstar forward. Advertisement A fire sale could ensue in Boston, as they look to offload high-salaried players like Jrue Holiday, Kristaps Porzingis and even Derrick White. According to Zach Lowe, the Celtics have discussed landing the two-time champion from the Suns, re-routing Holiday to a new destination. "I've heard that there have been discussions of 3-team Durant related trades where Jrue Holiday moves somewhere," Lowe reports. The Suns have already been disappointed with the trade packages from Durant's top three trade options. Facilitating a trade with the Celtics to benefit both sides -- while moving the 15-time All-Star -- could make sense for Phoenix. Advertisement While the Celtics may have had internal -- or even external -- conversations about landing Durant, the Suns need to be interested. With Devin Booker still in The Valley, Phoenix will be sure to make a move in their best interest, meaning the Celtics will have to outbid other suitors. Bayern Munich advances in the Club World Cup with 2-1 win over Boca Juniors

Associated Press MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Michael Olise fired Bayern Munich into the knockout stages of the Club World Cup, scoring in the 84th minute for a 2-1 win over Boca Juniors on Friday night. German champion Bayern made it two wins in Group C and advanced to the round of 16 with a game to spare. Olise secured the victory at Hard Rock Stadium after Miguel Merentiel had put Boca in position for a draw with a brilliant solo goal in the 66th. Bayern, which tops the group, took the lead on Harry Kane's clinical finish in the 18th and went on to miss of a slew of chances before Merentiel's equalizer. Key moment Bayern looked like it would be held until Olise's cool finish. Collecting Kane's layoff inside the box, the forward curled a powerful first-time effort low into the bottom corner. Takeaways Bayern has the luxury of resting players for its final group game against second-place Benfica on Tuesday, which could be bad news for Boca. Argentine giant Boca, which plays Auckland City, needs Bayern to beat Benfica to have any chance of advancing to the next round. What they said 'We knew it wasn't going to be easy, we knew we were coming into a hostile environment, hot weather, it was tough. It's a massive tournament. We are playing against the best teams in the world. We just have to compete to our highest level and we should be able to beat most teams.' — Kane. ___ James Robson is at ___ AP soccer: recommended
