Delhi riots larger conspiracy case: Judge hearing case brought back after transfer
Arguments on charge in the 2020 Delhi riots larger conspiracy case will not be heard afresh as the judge, who was hearing the case for a year and a half, was brought back to the Karkardooma Court Wednesday after he was transferred.
Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai was hearing arguments on charge, after the conclusion of which the trial of the case will begin, since September last year. Judge Bajpai was transferred to Saket Court at May end, and Additional Sessions Judge Lalit Kumar replaced him to hear arguments on charge afresh.
On Wednesday, a new notification published on the Delhi High Court website stated that ASJ Kumar had been transferred to Saket Court, and ASJ Bajpai was brought back to Karkardooma Court, where the larger conspiracy case is pending.
Out of the 18 accused arrested in connection with the case, 12 have been in jail for over four years.
The accused are Devangana Kalita, Natasha Narwal, Ishrat Jahan, Faizan Khan, Safoora Zargar, Asif Iqbal Tanha (all six on bail); Tahir Husain, Umar Khalid, Khalid Saifi, Sharjeel Imam, Meeran Haider, Gulfisha Fatima, Shifa-Ur-Rehman, Shadab Ahmed, Tasleem Ahmed, Saleem Malik, Mohd Saleem Khan, and Athar Khan (all 12 in jail).
From October to May 2025, five accused — including former JNU student leader Umar Khalid, former AAP councillor Tahir Hussain, Shifa Ur Rehman, and Safoora Zargar — had completed their arguments on charge. The prosecution also completed its arguments during day-to-day hearings.
The Delhi Police Special Cell started investigating the alleged conspiracy behind the riots soon after they broke out. The police booked the 18 accused under relevant provisions of the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and Indian Penal Code (IPC).
The police argued that the 2020 Delhi riots were the result of a months-long 'deep-rooted' conspiracy allegedly hatched after the Citizenship Amendment Bill got a nod from the Cabinet in December 2019.

Auto driver sentenced to life imprisonment for dowry death
Bengaluru: The stable statements from witnesses, police investigation, and circumstantial evidence corroborated helped in clinching life imprisonment for a 30-year-old auto driver, facing charges of abetting the suicide of his wife, a homemaker through dowry harassment. The convict is Anil N alias Anil Kumar of Maralawadi Town in Kanakapura. Harohalli police had arrested Anil in May 2020 after his wife, R Ashwini, 23, died by suicide. A mother of three children, including a special child, Ashwini married her long-time friend Anil Kumar despite her family's opposition. However, Anil started harassing Ashwini for dowry. He was also accused of having an affair with another woman. Anil was beating up Ashwini regularly over trivial issues. Depressed over his harassment, Ashwini hung herself inside her house on May 14, 2020. The previous night, Ashwini's neighbours had called her parents, saying Anil was badly beating her over dowry issues. Ashwini's father, Rajanna, a farmer, filed a complaint, stating: "Already we gave the couple over 70 grams of gold ornaments. Still, Anil was beating her up for more dowry." Harohalli cops arrested Anil after booking him under the IPC section 304B (dowry death). While submitting the chargesheet to court, police added statements from individuals who had, on many occasions, advised Anil not to ill-treat Ashwini and beat her up for dowry. Public prosecutor MK Roopalakshmi told TOI that the chargesheet witnesses, who had seen Ashwini's ordeals, stood firm during the trial. "Ashwini's parents, her neighbours, and others made statements during the entire trial. Also, the circumstantial evidence mentioned by the police during investigation played a vital role in convicting Anil," she said. Another police officer said they explained to the court how Anil neglected his three children after Ashwini's death. "The children are looked after by Ashwini's parents. Not even one day did Anil visit them or enquired about them. This matter was brought to the court's notice to explain Anil's attitude," he said. Anil, who was out on bail, was present in the court when Judge Kumar HN from additional district and sessions court, Ramanagar, passed the orders. Also, the court slapped a fine of Rs 35,000. Anil is shifted to the district prison.

Delhi DoE to mandate 6-yr age rule for Class 1 admissions
The Delhi directorate of education (DoE) has decided to implement a uniform age of six years for admissions to Class 1 from the 2026-27 academic session, by restructuring the foundational stage (nursery and KG classes), the directorate said on Saturday. (Representational photo/HT Archive) 'The Directorate of Education, GNCT of Delhi intends to implement the provisions of NEP 2020 and the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009 relating to restructuring of Foundational Stage and concerning minimum age criteria of 6+ years for Class I,' the directorate said in a circular dated June 20. It added that all heads of government, government-aided, and recognised unaided private schools under the directorate of education (DoE), GNCTD, have been informed regarding revised directions for foundational stage and implementation of uniform age of admission of 6+ years for Class 1. The circular, a copy of which was accessed by HT, added, 'The foundational stage admission is to be regulated as per NEP structure and will be reorganized to include three years of pre-primary education before Class 1.' According to the policy implementation, the age criteria that will be implemented will be 'three (3+) years of age for admission to nursery (Bal Vatika/ Preschool one), four (4+) years of age for lower KG (Bal Vatika/ Preschool two), and five (5+) years for upper KG (Bal Vatika/ Preschool three)'. The DoE added that the nomenclature of the pre-primary classes (nursery, lower KG, and upper KG) was flexible and may be revised as deemed necessary. The directorate further invited all stakeholders, including teachers, parents, students, school management committees, educational institutions, school associations, professionals, subject experts, scholars and members of the general public to share their inputs and suggestions for the implementation. 'To make the process more inclusive and participatory, it is essential to provide an opportunity for all stakeholders to contribute their inputs and suggestions regarding various aspects of the mechanism being developed,' the DoE said. The DoE said that detailed directions regarding the implementation of the measures will be shared with schools subsequently, in due course of time. Jyoti Arora, principal of Mount Abu Public School, said, 'The introduction of the Bal Vatika framework under the NEP 2020's structure marks a visionary step towards strengthening the early years of education in Delhi. By laying a strong foundation from age 3+, this initiative, as outlined in the directorate's circular, promotes holistic development, nurturing cognitive, social, and emotional growth in our youngest learners. I wholeheartedly welcome and support this transformative reform. We also advocate for collaborative planning with schools to ensure that adequate resources, training, and infrastructure support are in place.' Aprajita Gautam, the president of the Delhi Parents Association, expressed concerns over the long delay to implement the same. 'The NEP came in 2020 and it has already been five years. Several of Delhi schools still do not follow these provisions.'
