Auto driver sentenced to life imprisonment for dowry death

Time of India6 hours ago

Bengaluru: The stable statements from witnesses, police investigation, and circumstantial evidence corroborated helped in clinching life imprisonment for a 30-year-old auto driver, facing charges of abetting the suicide of his wife, a homemaker through dowry harassment.
The convict is Anil N alias Anil Kumar of Maralawadi Town in Kanakapura.
Harohalli police had arrested Anil in May 2020 after his wife, R Ashwini, 23, died by suicide. A mother of three children, including a special child, Ashwini married her long-time friend Anil Kumar despite her family's opposition.
However, Anil started harassing Ashwini for dowry. He was also accused of having an affair with another woman. Anil was beating up Ashwini regularly over trivial issues.
Depressed over his harassment, Ashwini hung herself inside her house on May 14, 2020. The previous night, Ashwini's neighbours had called her parents, saying Anil was badly beating her over dowry issues.
Ashwini's father, Rajanna, a farmer, filed a complaint, stating: "Already we gave the couple over 70 grams of gold ornaments. Still, Anil was beating her up for more dowry."
Harohalli cops arrested Anil after booking him under the IPC section 304B (dowry death).
While submitting the chargesheet to court, police added statements from individuals who had, on many occasions, advised Anil not to ill-treat Ashwini and beat her up for dowry. Public prosecutor MK Roopalakshmi told TOI that the chargesheet witnesses, who had seen Ashwini's ordeals, stood firm during the trial. "Ashwini's parents, her neighbours, and others made statements during the entire trial. Also, the circumstantial evidence mentioned by the police during investigation played a vital role in convicting Anil," she said.
Another police officer said they explained to the court how Anil neglected his three children after Ashwini's death. "The children are looked after by Ashwini's parents. Not even one day did Anil visit them or enquired about them. This matter was brought to the court's notice to explain Anil's attitude," he said.
Anil, who was out on bail, was present in the court when Judge Kumar HN from additional district and sessions court, Ramanagar, passed the orders. Also, the court slapped a fine of Rs 35,000. Anil is shifted to the district prison.

Loan scam: Case against education consultancy for duping finance firm of Rs 2.5 crore; police probe in Telangana

HYDERABAD: The economic offences wing (EOW) of Cyberabad police has registered a case of cheating and criminal intimidation against the directors of an education consultancy accused of defrauding a city-based non-banking financial company (NBFC) of over Rs 2.5 crore. According to a complaint filed by Keerthi Kumar Jain (44), director of the NBFC, the company disbursed a loan of Rs 1.5 crore on Feb 28, 2024, to an Erragadda-based education consultancy, represented by its directors B Kishore Kumar and B Shravan Kumar Beengi. The loan was sanctioned based on invoice receivables and employee details submitted by the accused. However, a subsequent internal audit revealed that the invoice was fabricated and the employee records were forged. When the NBFC confronted the consultancy and suspended further disbursals, the accused allegedly severed all communication and even issued threats of 'grave consequences' to complainant. "To date, not a single instalment has been repaid. The borrowers are deliberately evading contact, indicating clear intent to cheat from the beginning," Jain said in his complaint. As of March 29, 2025, the outstanding dues, including principal, interest, and charges, amounted to Rs 2.25 crore. Despite repeated visits, calls, emails, and legal notices, there has been no response from the borrowers, prompting the NBFC to approach the police. Based on the complaint, Cyberabad EOW registered a case on June 17 against Kishore and Shravan under sections 318(4) (cheating), 316(2) (criminal breach of trust), read with 3(5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Police have initiated an investigation and are currently verifying loan documents and financial transaction details between both parties.

One arrested for selling forest land as residential plots

Adilabad: The district police have arrested one person for claiming ownership of forest land and selling it to victims as residential plots. At a press conference on Saturday at Mavala Police Station, DSP L Jeevan Reddy stated that based on a complaint filed by Shobha Murarka (wife of late Nandakishore Murarka), police arrested Vakulabharanam Adinath, while his wife Vakulabharanam Rajini is currently absconding. 'In 2010, Adinath falsely claimed ownership of forest land near Khanapur, converted it into plotted land, and sold four plots (Nos. 57, 58, 59, and 60) to the complainant for Rs 3.3 lakh. In 2022, forest officials took over these plots after identifying them as forest land. When the complainant confronted the accused and demanded her money back, he responded dismissively, saying to approach the court and even threatened her if she informed others,' said the DSP. Adinath was produced before a magistrate and sent to 14 days of judicial remand. The DSP confirmed that both revenue and forest authorities verified the land to be forest property. He emphasised that Adilabad police are taking strict action against land grabbers and warned that those engaging in document forgery and public deception will face severe consequences.
