How This 77-Year-Old Woman Has A Body As Fit As That Of A 25-Year-Old
A 77-year-old woman has secured the first position in the 75-79 age group at the 2025 Boston Marathon. Jeannie Rice completed the marathon, her 134th, in 4 hours, 27 minutes, and 17 seconds.
Ms Rice's aerobic fitness and endurance capacity are on the same level as a 25-year-old woman, according to a report published in the Journal of Applied Physiology. What her body tells us about ageing is that age doesn't have to limit physical abilities.
Asked how she managed to train consistently over 30 years, she said, "I love running and being an example for younger athletes," adding, "I feel as young as when I was 50, and I'd like to be doing this well into my 80s. That's my personal goal."
She added that she has a rich social life and enjoys going out to dance. She said, "A lot of runners are so serious they don't do anything socially. But I like to have fun. I'm the last one to go home."
Ms Rice is considered a "medical marvel." She has often turned heads not only for breaking world women's records in her age group but also for outperforming the fastest men in that category. Not only this, she has the highest VO2max (maximum oxygen uptake), a measure of aerobic fitness, ever recorded for women over 75.
High VO2max was probably the primary physiological characteristic explaining her success across an array of running distances, the study said.
Ms Rice, for her age, showed a very high cardiorespiratory fitness, as indicated by a VO2max of 47.9 mLkg-1min-1, the study added. Untrained women of this age group typically have a VO2max of 17.5-27.4 mL kg 1 min-1, it added.
Bas Van Hooren, an assistant professor of nutrition and movement sciences at Maastricht University in the Netherlands, said that researchers are examining Ms Rice to learn how people can maintain their fitness as they age, despite lower levels of physical activity frequently observed in the elderly.
Mr Hoorens said that researchers study Ms Rice's body fat, muscle structure, and how well her body uses energy while running at her marathon pace.
He said Ms Rice proves it's never too late to start exercising.

MS not only affects physical well-being but also mental, social, and financial health. Dr Chandra says, 'In India, more than 1.5 lakh individuals, primarily young adults aged 20-40, are struggling with this condition in the absence of proper systemic support." 'The symptoms of MS are varied and differ in each person. These can involve fatigue, vision problems, weakness in the muscles, motor impairment, balance issues, cognitive problems, and even depression. These symptoms might get intensified over time, making performing everyday tasks a huge challenge for those afflicted by it," explains Dr Chandra. While the precise cause of MS is unknown, studies indicate that a combination of genetic predisposition and environmental exposures is implicated. Dr Chandra says, 'MS cannot be cured, yet it can be treated. Disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) like ocrelizumab, today, are enhancing outcomes by lowering relapse rates as well as halting disease progression and preventing disability in the long run. Ocrelizumab is one of the DMTs approved in India, which can be used in all subtypes of multiple sclerosis and is the only treatment approved for the primary progressive form of MS. It works by targeting immune cells that cause nerve damage, significantly reducing relapse rates, slowing disease progression, and preserving mobility for longer. Administered biannually, it also improves adherence by minimising treatment burden." Beyond medical treatment, patients face significant social stigma – being seen as unreliable, lazy, or even emotionally unstable. Empowering people with MS means advocating for early and accurate diagnosis, workplace accommodations, mental health support, and inclusion in policy frameworks. Accurate and timely diagnosis remains a problem, particularly in smaller cities where neurologists and diagnostic facilities are scarce and symptoms get falsely attributed to other neurological or nutritional diseases. NASA Reacts After Brazilian Social Media "Astronaut" Claims She's Headed To Space
A Brazilian social media star's claim of becoming a "career astronaut " after alleged NASA training has prompted a sharp correction from the US space agency itself. According to the New York Post, Laysa Peixoto announced earlier this month that she had been picked for a career in space exploration. She claimed that she earned a spot in the coveted "Astronaut Class of 2025" with plans to fly to the Moon and Mars. She also stated that she would be joining the private space company's maiden voyage in 2029, commanded by NASA veteran astronaut Bill McArthur. "I was selected to become a career astronaut, performing on manned spaceflights for private space stations, and future manned missions to the Moon and Mars. I'm officially an astronaut of the Class of 2025 and will be part of the inaugural Titans Space flight," Ms Peixoto claimed on Instagram. "It is a great joy to represent Brazil as an astronaut in such a decisive era of space exploration, that will change history of mankind forever. It's an honor to carry the flag of Brazil with me as the first Brazilian woman to cross that border," she added. NASA clarified that Ms Peixoto is neither an astronaut candidate nor is she affiliated with the space agency. "While we generally do not comment on personnel, this individual is not a NASA employee, principal investigator, or astronaut candidate," NASA said, per Daily Mail. The space agency also said the Brazilian woman had taken part in a workshop, L'Space Academy, with NASA that wasn't an internship or a job. "It would be inappropriate to claim NASA affiliation as part of this opportunity," the agency stated. Separately, Titan Space, a private company yet to receive Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) approval for human spaceflight, acknowledged Ms Peixoto's association but confirmed she is not on the official list of astronauts for its 2029 inaugural mission. Amidst this, Ms Peixoto returned to Instagram on Thursday to address NASA and Titans Space statements. She said she never claimed to have been selected by the American space agency, and that she was only wearing a NASA space jacket in the photo. "Maybe many of you didn't get a chance to read what I said when I announced 'I'm going to space,' just the title. Female Prison Cop Had Phone Sex With Inmate, Sent His Mother 900 Messages
A female prison officer, who had phone sex with a prisoner, has confessed to public misconduct and faces jail time. Megann Gibson was smitten with the man while she was employed at HM Prison Wealstun in West Yorkshire. The 26-year-old visited the prisoner in his resettlement housing, allowed him access to restricted areas of the facility, and had sexual interaction with him while she was employed there. She also sent his mother over 900 messages to keep their affair going when it seemed to be unravelling. Ms Gibson has now entered a guilty plea to misconduct in public service and faces imprisonment. She also admitted to possessing cannabis. The former guard is expected to be sentenced in August, The Telegraph reported. The judge at Leeds Crown Court in West Yorkshire, Northwest England, warned Ms Gibson that she could receive a prison term. She was later released on unconditional bail, but the judge emphasised that her offence was a "serious matter." She has been suspended from her job at Wealstun, a Category C prison. According to the charges against her, Ms Gibson had "sexual communications via telephone" as part of an "inappropriate relationship" with the prisoner at the time of her employment at the HM Prison Wealstun in West Yorkshire. According to Ms Gibson's defence attorney, she was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) from a past relationship and undergoing a series of mental health diagnoses. Ms Gibson is the latest female prison guard to be fired in the United Kingdom due to her illegal relationship with an inmate. Isabelle Dale, 23, was charged in May for having sex with two prisoners and conspiring with them to sneak drugs into the high-security facility in Kent, Southeast London. Another UK prison guard, who admitted to having an "inappropriate" affair with an inmate, was sentenced to one year in prison. Toni Cole, a staff member at HMP Five Wells, admitted to having an affair with a male prisoner, 28, in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire. At least 29 UK female prison guards have been terminated due to inappropriate interactions with inmates in the last three years, per the New York Post.
