Sri Lanka's Ambidextrous Spinner Shines On Debut In 1st Test Vs Bangladesh
Last Updated:
Sri Lanka's ambidextrous spinner Tharindu Rathnayake switches arms based on the batter's weaknesses.
Sri Lanka's ambidextrous spinner Tharindu Rathnayake mentioned that he switches his bowling arm based on the weaknesses of the batter on strike.
This strategy helped him claim two wickets on the first day of his debut Test match against Bangladesh on Tuesday.
Both of Rathnayake's wickets were taken with right-arm deliveries in the first session.
However, the 29-year-old also bowled with his left arm as Bangladesh ended the day at 292-3 in Galle.
'We talked about what each batsman is better at facing, and which sides they hit to. So I try to create plans around their weaknesses, and change which arm I'm bowling with according to that," Rathnayake was quoted by ESPN Cricinfo as saying.
Rathnayake is not the only ambidextrous spinner in the Sri Lankan team, as Kamindu Mendis is also known for bowling with both arms.
However, Mendis, an all-rounder, has taken only 31 first-class wickets in 56 matches, while Rathnayake, primarily a bowler, has taken 337 wickets in 73 appearances.
'I don't know which arm I've taken more wickets with. I've never looked at it properly. I've bowled a lot with both my arms," Rathnayake said.
'When I started first-class cricket, I bowled a lot with my left arm. But later, after a couple of years, it became about 60% right arm and 40% left arm."

‘No medals this time': Gambhir urged to change Shubman Gill's fielding position after Gavaskar slams Jaiswal for dropped catches
A mix of shoddy bowling from the pace unit behind Jasprit Bumrah and a slew of catches dropped in the outfield meant that India conceded England the momentum at the end of day 2 of the Leeds Test on Saturday. England cut down the first-innings deficit by 209 runs at the loss of three wickets, all to Bumrah, in response to India's 471-run total that ended abruptly with a precipitous collapse. After Bumrah nipped opener Zak Crawley in the first over, there wasn't a lot going the India pacer's way with his fielders and seam-bowling peers at the other end losing the plot consistently. First-innings centurion Jaiswal handed early lifelines to Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope with regulation chances going down in the slip cordon. Even India's star fielder Ravindra Jadeja put down a straightforward catch of Ben Duckett at backward point from Bumrah's bowling. While Duckett paced his way to 62, the under-fire Pope fought his way through to a ninth Test hundred and second against India. India legend Sunil Gavaskar lamented the sloppy fielding effort from India and singled out Jaiswal's below-par performance on the field. 'I don't think there will be any medal given. T Dilip gives those after a match. This is what was really very, very disappointing. Yashasvi Jaiswal is a very good fielder but he hasn't been able to hold on to anything this time,' Sunil Gavaskar, who was commentating, said at the close of play. The 23-year-old Jaiswal had also recently come under the scanner for his close-in fielding during India's Border-Gavaskar Trophy tour to Australia last year. jaiswal really needs to work on his catching, really poor from professional — DAHIYA SAYS….. (@jaatdevta1438) June 22, 2025 Former India pacer Varun Aaron urged head coach Gautam Gambhir to advise captain Shubman Gill to take over a position in the slips, after having stationed himself at mid-on or mid-off during the innings. 'Dropped chances, in the end, they cost you games. Jaiswal dropped one before Jaddu, it would have been a sharp catch, but you have to back him to take those chances. Cam Green, for Australia, takes these without a fuss. I would say Jaiswal can be up there, but he has dropped two now. One of those days where it does not go for you,' Aaron said on ESPN Cricinfo 'Shubman Gill has been standing at mid on and mid off, one of the better slip fielders in India. I would back Shubman to be in the slips and take these catches, especially in England. Maybe Gambhir will have a chat with him, and be like, 'You can speak to the bowler in between overs and stuff like that, but we need you in the slips',' he added. India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak also rued the wasted opportunities and the no-balls shortly before close of play from Bumrah, one that deprived him of Harry Brook's wicket for nought. 'Those dropped catches and the no-ball were definitely disappointing. Usually, we're sharper in the field. But as a support staff and team, we take it as one of those unfortunate days — not the norm. Overall, we bowled well barring a few loose patches. There was something in the wicket, and we tried to make the most of it,' Kotak said in the post-match press conference.

Ravindra Jadeja, VVS Laxman Not Paid Salaries By Defunct IPL Franchise, There's A Rs 538 Crore Connection
The controversy between the BCCI and now-defunct Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kochi Tuskers Kerala (KTK) is making new headlines everyday. KTK were a part of IPL in 2011, where they played 14 games and won only six. The BCCI terminated the franchise after just one season (2011), accusing the team of a contract breach after failing to submit a bank guarantee on time, which was required under the agreement. However, last week, the Bombay High Court, ordered BCCI to pay Rs 538 crore to KTK. After this news left everyone stunned, another report by Malayalam newspaper Mathrubhumi revealed that many big names like VVS Laxman, Ravindra Jadeja, Steve Smith are yet to receive their full and final payment from the Kerala-based franchise. According to the report, KTK paid the players the first two installments of their salaries. However, they are yet to pay them their third installment, which was 35 percent of their respective salaries. "Sri Lankan legend Mahela Jayawardene, who captained the Kochi franchise, was the team's most expensive signing at Rs 6.80 crore. It is reported that over Rs 2 crore is still due to him-excluding accumulated interest over the years. Current England head coach Brendon McCullum, signed for Rs 2.15 crore, is still owed approximately Rs 75 lakh," stated the report. "Other notable names awaiting payment include former India interim head coach VVS Laxman, Gujarat Titans assistant coach Parthiv Patel, Australian batter Steve Smith, and Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. Even local Kerala players like S. Sreesanth, Raiphi Vincent, Prasanth Padmanabhan, and Prashanth Parameswaran are among those left unpaid," stated further. Talking about the Bombay High Court ruling, in 2015, the BCCI was asked to pay Rs 550 crore -- 384 crore to KCPL and 153 crore to Rendenzvous sport -- to IPL franchise Kochi Tuskers after an arbitration ruled in favour of the team recently. The BCCI had challenged the tribunal's verdict in court. The franchise which was bought for a whooping Rs 1,550 crore a year ago defaulted on their annual payment after which the BCCI terminated their contract in 2011. The franchise won the case against the BCCI and the court ordered the board to pay Rs 550 crore. "The jurisdiction of this Court under Section 34 of the Arbitration Act is very limited. BCCI's endeavour to delve into the merits of the dispute, is in teeth of the scope of the grounds contained in Section 34 of the Act. BCCI's dissatisfaction as to the findings rendered in respect of the evidence and/or the merits cannot be a ground to assail the Award," the court said in its ruling last week.
