‘No medals this time': Gambhir urged to change Shubman Gill's fielding position after Gavaskar slams Jaiswal for dropped catches
A mix of shoddy bowling from the pace unit behind Jasprit Bumrah and a slew of catches dropped in the outfield meant that India conceded England the momentum at the end of day 2 of the Leeds Test on Saturday.
England cut down the first-innings deficit by 209 runs at the loss of three wickets, all to Bumrah, in response to India's 471-run total that ended abruptly with a precipitous collapse. After Bumrah nipped opener Zak Crawley in the first over, there wasn't a lot going the India pacer's way with his fielders and seam-bowling peers at the other end losing the plot consistently.
First-innings centurion Jaiswal handed early lifelines to Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope with regulation chances going down in the slip cordon. Even India's star fielder Ravindra Jadeja put down a straightforward catch of Ben Duckett at backward point from Bumrah's bowling. While Duckett paced his way to 62, the under-fire Pope fought his way through to a ninth Test hundred and second against India.
India legend Sunil Gavaskar lamented the sloppy fielding effort from India and singled out Jaiswal's below-par performance on the field.
'I don't think there will be any medal given. T Dilip gives those after a match. This is what was really very, very disappointing. Yashasvi Jaiswal is a very good fielder but he hasn't been able to hold on to anything this time,' Sunil Gavaskar, who was commentating, said at the close of play.
The 23-year-old Jaiswal had also recently come under the scanner for his close-in fielding during India's Border-Gavaskar Trophy tour to Australia last year.

Former India pacer Varun Aaron urged head coach Gautam Gambhir to advise captain Shubman Gill to take over a position in the slips, after having stationed himself at mid-on or mid-off during the innings.
'Dropped chances, in the end, they cost you games. Jaiswal dropped one before Jaddu, it would have been a sharp catch, but you have to back him to take those chances. Cam Green, for Australia, takes these without a fuss. I would say Jaiswal can be up there, but he has dropped two now. One of those days where it does not go for you,' Aaron said on ESPN Cricinfo
'Shubman Gill has been standing at mid on and mid off, one of the better slip fielders in India. I would back Shubman to be in the slips and take these catches, especially in England. Maybe Gambhir will have a chat with him, and be like, 'You can speak to the bowler in between overs and stuff like that, but we need you in the slips',' he added.
India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak also rued the wasted opportunities and the no-balls shortly before close of play from Bumrah, one that deprived him of Harry Brook's wicket for nought.
'Those dropped catches and the no-ball were definitely disappointing. Usually, we're sharper in the field. But as a support staff and team, we take it as one of those unfortunate days — not the norm. Overall, we bowled well barring a few loose patches. There was something in the wicket, and we tried to make the most of it,' Kotak said in the post-match press conference.

‘No-ball, 3 missed chances stood between you and nau wickets': Sachin Tendulkar lauds Jasprit Bumrah; subtly points out India's fielding woes
Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar praised Jasprit Bumrah for taking a fifer against England at Leeds on Sunday while also subtly pointing out India's missed chances on the field. While Bumrah's fifer helped India bowl out England for 465, the score might have been even less had India taken all their catching chances on the field. Off Bumrah's bowling alone, India dropped 4 catches, three by Yashasvi Jaiswal and one by Ravindra Jadeja with Harry Brook getting reprieve twice, once on 46 and then on 82. The England batter would fail to reach three figures, getting caught by Shardul Thakur off Prasidh Krishna on 99, but he had already done enough damage to India by the time he walked back. 'Congratulations Bumrah! A no-ball and 3 missed chances stood between you and 𝙣𝙖𝙪 wickets,' Tendulkar posted on X. Congratulations Bumrah!A no-ball and 3 missed chances stood between you and 𝙣𝙖𝙪 wickets. 🤪 — Sachin Tendulkar (@sachin_rt) June 22, 2025 By taking the five-fer at Leeds, Bumrah drew level with the legendary Kapil Dev to become the Indian players with the joint-most five wicket hauls in away Tests. Bumrah has taken 12 fifers, the same as Dev but did it in 34 Test matches as compared to 66 matches by the former India World Cup winning captain. They are followed by Ishant Sharma who has taken 9 fifers in 63 matches, Zaheer Khan who has 8 in 54 matches and Irafan Pathan who has 7 in 15 matches. Bumrah accounted for the wickets of Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Chris Woakes and Josh Tongue as India bundled out England for 465, still maintaining a lead of 6 runs. Before Bumrah castled Josh Tongue to end England innings, Chris Woakes (38 off 55) punished a predictable Indian pace attack to take his team close to India's 471. England's tail virtually cancelled out the Indian first innings with the match now hinged on third and fourth innings respectively. Hosts continued to find the boundaries at will as they collected 138 runs in 23.4 overs in the afternoon session with the loss of five wickets. Prasidh removed Jamie Smith (40 off 52) and Brook with the short ball but leaked too many runs at the same time with his one dimensional tactic, conceding 128 runs in 20 overs.

Jasprit Bumrah Equals Legendary Kapil Dev Record With 5-Wicket Haul
Jasprit Bumrah matched Kapil Dev's record of 12 five-wicket hauls in Tests away from India. Jasprit Bumrah broke multiple records with his 5-wicket haul on day three of the first Test of the five-match series between India and England at Headingley in Leeds on Sunday. Bumrah equalled Indian legend Kapil Dev for the joint-most five-wicket hauls in Tests away from India by an Indian bowler. Bumrah has taken 12 five-wicket hauls in just 34 Test matches, whereas Kapil Dev achieved the same feat in 66 matches. They are followed by Ishant Sharma, who has 9 five-wicket hauls in 63 matches, Zaheer Khan with 8 in 54 matches, and Irfan Pathan with 7 in 15 matches. Most five-wicket hauls for India in away Test matches – Bumrah took the wickets of Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Joe Root, Chris Woakes and Josh Tongue, but could have had more as multiple catches were dropped. Resuming their innings at 209-3 in response to India's 471 all out, England suffered an early setback when overnight centurion Ollie Pope was dismissed for 106. Harry Brook, attempting to reach his century with a six, fell in the second session. Brook had settled in with some crisp hitting, smashing 11 boundaries and bringing up his 12th Test half-century, despite India's fielding lapses. He was handed a third lifeline when he slashed at a wide delivery to Yashasvi Jaiswal at fourth slip, but the Indian opener dropped his third catch of the innings. The Yorkshire-born batter seemed destined for a big score until he attempted a lofted shot off Prasidh Krishna over fine leg, only to be caught by Shardul Thakur at the boundary rope. A dejected Brook threw his head back and covered his face before making his way back to the pavilion, receiving a standing ovation from the Headingley crowd. Krishna had also dismissed Pope with a short delivery, which the batter nicked to Rishabh Pant behind the stumps, adding only six runs to his overnight score.

Sachin Tendulkar shows no mercy on Indian fielders, calls out Jaiswal, Jadeja for denying Jasprit Bumrah '9 wickets'
Jasprit Bumrah's searing spell of fast bowling earned him a well-deserved five-wicket haul in the first innings at Headingley, and with it, the praise of none other than Sachin Tendulkar himself. The Indian legend took to social media shortly after Bumrah wrapped up England's innings to point towards just how phenomenal the pacer had been, despite a series of frustrating setbacks. Sachin Tendulkar reacted to Jasprit Bumrah's five-for in the first innings of the Headingley Test(PTI) 'Congratulations Bumrah! A no-ball and 3 missed chances stood between you and nau (nine) wickets,' Tendulkar posted, summing up the tale of a lone warrior operating at the peak of his powers. The numbers alone, 5/83 in 24.4 overs, don't capture the full weight of Bumrah's performance. He was, by far, the best bowler on either side in this Test, both in skill and impact. On a pitch that offered little help, it was Bumrah who held the line. He removed Zak Crawley early, dismissed the dangerous Joe Root, returned late to clean up Josh Tongue, and did all this while battling both the conditions and his own teammates' lapses. In fact, the only thing standing between Bumrah and a haul for the ages was luck, or the lack of it. He had Harry Brook dismissed off a no-ball at the end of Day 2, saw Ravindra Jadeja – a usually reliable fielder – dropping a catch off his bowling before Yashasvi Jaiswal dropped another two. All three reprieves came off Bumrah's bowling, and all cost India runs and control. Yet, through all of it, Bumrah stayed composed, focused, and lethal. When India were desperate to finish off the England innings after the other bowlers leaked runs, it was Bumrah who delivered the final blows. He castled Chris Woakes and then Josh Tongue, sealing his 14th five-wicket haul in Test cricket and giving India a narrow six-run first-innings lead. A record figure As he looked up to the heavens in quiet relief, his teammates swarmed him in celebration. This was Bumrah's 12th five-wicket haul in away Tests, which took him level with the great Kapil Dev. India will now be hoping to put another solid batting performance to put England under pressure in the run-chase.
