8 sitcoms to binge while waiting for the 'Malcolm in the Middle' revival

Express Tribune26-04-2025

Fans of Malcolm in the Middle have a major reason to celebrate, with a four-episode revival landing later this year on Disney+.
The new instalments will feature most of the original cast and promise a fresh wave of chaos and heartfelt moments that made the show a generation-defining classic.
If you are finding the wait unbearable, it might be the perfect time to dive into other series that capture a similar offbeat spirit.
When Malcolm in the Middle first aired on Fox in 2000, it shook up the sitcom format with its single-camera style, absence of canned laughter, surreal yet grounded storytelling, and frequent breaking of the fourth wall.
In the years since, many shows have borrowed and evolved this formula.
Here are eight sitcoms to binge that echo the magic of Malcolm in the Middle.
1. Raising Hope (2010–2014)
From the creator of My Name Is Earl, this quirky family sitcom follows young Jimmy Chance as he unexpectedly becomes a single dad to baby Hope. Featuring hilarious, often absurd family dynamics, Raising Hope delivers a sweet, off-kilter humour that Malcolm fans will instantly appreciate.
2. Modern Family (2009–2020)
A multi-generational look at modern life, Modern Family uses a mockumentary format and single-camera setup to brilliant effect. Its sharp humour, heartwarming moments, and chaotic family energy make it a perfect binge while waiting for Malcolm and the gang to return.
3. Freaks and Geeks (1999–2000)
Although short-lived, Freaks and Geeks left a lasting mark. This coming-of-age dramedy captures the awkwardness of adolescence with sharp wit and raw realism, much like Malcolm's journey through the madness of his own family and school life.
4. Everybody Hates Chris (2005–2009)
Inspired by comedian Chris Rock's childhood, Everybody Hates Chris offers a hilarious, relatable portrayal of growing up in a tough Brooklyn neighbourhood. Its dry humour, voiceover narration, and underdog protagonist feel very much in the spirit of Malcolm.
5. Arrested Development (2003–2006, 2013–2019)
If you love dysfunctional families who are their own worst enemies, Arrested Development is essential viewing. Known for its intricate jokes, layered storytelling, and rapid-fire humour, it's a brilliant substitute for Malcolm in the Middle's chaotic charm.
6. Grounded for Life (2001–2005)
This underrated gem follows the working-class Finnerty family as they juggle parenting teenagers while barely holding themselves together. With its fast pace, heartfelt core, and mischievous humour, it will easily fill the Malcolm void.
7. The Middle (2009–2018)
No relation to Malcolm, but The Middle captures the struggles of a working-class family with plenty of humour and heart. Starring Patricia Heaton, it portrays the beautiful mess of raising kids and making ends meet in small-town America.
8. Malcolm in the Middle (Rewatch!)
And of course, why not revisit the original? Whether it's for the zany cold opens, Reese's ridiculous antics, or Lois's unhinged parenting style, now is the perfect time to rediscover everything that made Malcolm in the Middle so groundbreaking.

Midjourney AI: Midjourney launches first AI video tool to animate images

Midjourney has launched its first public video generation tool, allowing users to create animated clips from still images. The new feature, announced on Midjourney's website, enables the generation of five-second videos from either uploaded images or those created within the Midjourney platform. Once an image is selected, an 'animate' button appears, offering a standard motion option or a manual setting for customising movement. The animation can be extended in four-second increments, with a maximum length of 21 seconds. Motion settings allow users to determine whether the subject, the camera, or both are animated. The feature is currently limited to subscribers, with plans starting at $10 (USD) per month. Introducing our V1 Video Model. It's fun, easy, and beautiful. Available at 10$/month, it's the first video model for *everyone* and it's available now. — Midjourney (@midjourney) June 18, 2025 Midjourney says the cost of video generation is approximately eight times higher than that of image rendering, equating to roughly one image's worth of cost per second of video. The launch comes amid an ongoing copyright lawsuit filed by Disney and Universal. The two entertainment companies argue that Midjourney's training process may have included unauthorised use of copyrighted works. Legal filings specifically flagged the video tool as a concern, with plaintiffs describing the company's output as a 'virtual vending machine' for unlicensed content. Midjourney founder David Holz described the release as 'a stepping stone' in the company's development of real-time, open-world simulation models. The startup is one of several firms racing to develop AI-powered video tools, with competitors such as Google, OpenAI, and Meta also releasing systems that generate video content from text prompts. Social media users have been sharing their first reactions, including early videos, with many hailing it as a 'game-changer'. Jeremy Allen White channels Bruce Springsteen in first trailer for ‘Deliver Me From Nowhere' biopic

Jeremy Allen White, best known for his Emmy-winning role in The Bear, steps into the shoes of legendary musician Bruce Springsteen in Deliver Me From Nowhere, the upcoming biopic that explores the making of Springsteen's 1982 album Nebraska. The first trailer for the film was released this week, offering a glimpse into White's intense transformation into the rock icon. Directed by Scott Cooper, known for Crazy Heart, the film is based on Warren Zanes' book chronicling the deeply personal journey behind Nebraska, a stark and emotionally raw album that marked a turning point in Springsteen's career. Cooper, who previously led Jeff Bridges to an Oscar win for his role in Crazy Heart, directs a star-studded ensemble cast for the new project. Joining White in the cast is Succession and The Apprentice actor Jeremy Strong, portraying longtime Springsteen manager Jon Landau. Stephen Graham plays Douglas Springsteen, the singer's father, while Paul Walter Hauser appears as engineer Mike Batlan. Odessa Young co-stars as Faye, a love interest, and Marc Maron takes on the role of producer Chuck Plotkin. The supporting cast also includes Johnny Cannizzaro as guitarist Steve Van Zandt, Harrison Gilbertson as Matt Delia, David Krumholtz as Columbia Records executive Al Teller, and Chris Jaymes as mastering engineer Dennis King. Deliver Me From Nowhere is produced by 20th Century Studios, a division of Disney, in collaboration with Ellen Goldsmith-Vein and Eric Robinson of the Gotham Group. Both Bruce Springsteen and Jon Landau are involved in the production, lending authenticity to the project. The film joins a growing wave of musician biopics following in the footsteps of Elvis, Bohemian Rhapsody, and A Complete Unknown, with many garnering awards attention.

Wonderfully weird world of Gumball premieres July 28 on Hulu and Disney+

The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball is officially set to premiere on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ on July 28, 2025, according to Ray Flook of Bleeding Cool. This updated version of the hit animated series The Amazing World of Gumball marks a new chapter for the beloved characters of Elmore, as the show adopts a new title and promises even more chaotic fun. The rebranded series comes from original creator Ben Bocquelet, with Matt Layzell and Erik Fountain on board as executive producers and series directors. According to the official description, the name change reflects the show's shift toward "even wilder stories, bigger twists, and surreal humor." The announcement was accompanied by a new key art poster teasing the madness to come. Since its debut in 2011, The Amazing World of Gumball has earned a loyal following for its sharp humor, unique animation style, and layered storytelling — elements fans hope to see amplified in the reboot. The series' return has already generated buzz, including its anticipated presence at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, where past installments offered first looks and behind-the-scenes insights. Set once again in the eccentric town of Elmore, the reboot follows Gumball as he battles fast food villains, AI love interests, and neighborhood absurdities. The returning voice cast includes Alkaio Thiele as Gumball, Hero Hunter as Darwin, Kinza Syed Khan as Anais, and others, with Xav Clarke composing and Joe Sparrow directing the art. 'We haven't grown up much since we last saw them… and neither have Gumball and Darwin,' said Bocquelet, Layzell, and Fountain in a joint statement. Fans can expect the same chaotic energy — just turned up a notch — when The Wonderfully Weird World of Gumball hits screens this July.
