GVMC readies action plan to check diseases this monsoon season
The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has planned several strategies to check seasonal diseases in the city this monsoon season.
The civic body has drawn a comprehensive action plan focused on mosquito control, raising people's awareness and improvement in sanitation.
Identifying fever hotspots based on history, intensifying anti-larval operations, and initiating widespread fogging and spraying activities are among the key strategies.
Chief Medical & Officer of Health (CMoH) Naresh Kumar said that 106 water stagnation points had been identified in the GVMC limits.
Sanitation teams are being deployed to monitor such spots and clear water stagnation points, especially during rains. Spraying operations are being carried out in drains across the city, and oil balls will be put in select water bodies to check mosquito breeding. The GVMC has been using drones to spray pesticides in some water bodies.
'While anti-larval measures are already on, we will intensify the operations in anticipation of the rains and the possible outbreak of vector-borne diseases,' Dr. Naresh Kumar said.
Augmenting manpower
To strengthen the manpower for these intensified operations, the GVMC has proposed the recruitment of an additional 430 personnel. Currently, around 230 workers are engaged in anti-larval operations. The proposal is expected to be reviewed during the upcoming GVMC Council meeting, likely to be held in the first or second week of June.
Starting June 15, when educational institutions are scheduled to reopen, fogging and spraying operations will be carried out in all hostels.
In general, Visakhapatnam reports dengue cases often when compared to chikungunya and malaria. Last year, a few cases of malaria were reported. However, the number of cases being reported is on the decline, the officials said.
Meanwhile, the GVMC officials are preparing to launch awareness campaigns in collaboration with the Health Department, ASHA workers, Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs), and sachivalayam staff.
A door-to-door surveillance exercise will be rolled out to educate residents in clearing stagnant water, aiming to curb mosquito breeding at the source.

VIJAYAWADA: A total of 7,099 medical staff were transferred to new positions as part of the first phase of transfers under the Health, Medical and Family Welfare Department, which concluded on Friday. Of these, around 5,200 employees were compulsorily transferred after completing five years of service in their existing posts, while another 1,899 were moved based on personal requests submitted by the employees. The State government is now preparing for the second phase of transfers, which will cover 9,650 Grade-3 Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs) working at the village level. These transfers are scheduled to be completed by June 30, as they require coordination with the village and ward secretariat departments to ensure its smooth implementation. Health Minister Y Satya Kumar Yadav expressed satisfaction over the transparent and dispute-free execution of the transfers of the employees. He appreciated the efforts of department officials and said the process was conducted strictly in accordance with established rules and guidelines, unlike previous years when transfer exercises were surrounded by controversy and allegations of irregularities.

‘Will screen all in state for sickle cell anaemia'
Ranchi: The state department of health, medical education and family welfare aims to screen Jharkhand's entire population for sickle cell anaemia within a year, health minister Irfan Ansari said on Thursday. Addressing a programme, held to observe World Sickle Cell Awareness Day at sadar hospital here, Ansari said a bone marrow transplant centre will soon be set up in the hospital to ensure affordable treatment to the patients of the state. "Jharkhand has emerged as a model for other states when it comes to testing sickle cell anaemia. The health professionals, including doctors, nurses, ANMs, and GNMs, have played a key role behind this success. The govt is committed to 100% eradication of the disease in the state," he said. Ansari said extensive tests are being carried out to detect sickle cell anaemia across all the districts in line with the Centre's National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission 2047. Health officials and experts said the disease is prevalent in 17 districts, where tribal population dominate the demography. "Soon, we will set up a Medico City which will provide comprehensive medical care in the state. Patients will not have to travel outside for treatment," he said. Health secretary Ajoy Kumar Singh said most of the patients hail from tribal communities. "Out of 1,381 recorded sickle cell anaemia patients in Ranchi district, only 225 are undergoing treatment. We must ensure 100% testing of all population and provide medical attention to those affected by the disease," he said.

NCDCD survey finds Chittoor leading in diabetes, hypertension rates
Tirupati: Chittoor district has reported a higher prevalence of diabetes and hypertension than Tirupati, as per the findings of the ongoing NCDCD 3.0 (Non-Communicable Disease Control and Detection) survey. The data, released by health officials, highlights the growing health burden linked to lifestyle diseases and underscores the urgency of early detection and intervention. The survey is part of the NDA government's broader push to strengthen preventive healthcare through early screening of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in the State. Launched on November 14 last year and is scheduled to complete by the end of this month, the initiative deploys medical teams, comprising MLHPs, ANMs, and ASHA workers, to visit households and collect health information from individuals above the age of 18. The collected data is uploaded to a digital platform, enabling doctors to access patients' health records during consultations and provide informed care. In Chittoor district, where the total number of households is 5,92,514, the survey has already been completed in 5,03,207 homes. Out of 15,67,268 eligible individuals, 11,23,233 have been screened so far. Of those, 1,20,295 have been found to have diabetes and 1,33,327 have hypertension. Additionally, 273 individuals are suspected of having oral cancer, 218 of breast cancer, and 203 of cervical cancer, according to District Medical and Health Officer (DM&HO) Dr DT Sudha Rani. Meanwhile, in Tirupati district, 12,27,723 individuals have been screened out of a target population of 17,47,091. About 3,84,694 people were not available during the survey visits, resulting in a 70.26 percent completion rate, with 7.73 percent of the target group yet to be covered. Despite the wider coverage in Tirupati, the incidence rates of key non-communicable diseases remain lower than in Chittoor. Diabetes prevalence in Chittoor stands at 10.7 percent compared to 7.49 percent in Tirupati, while hypertension rates are 11.86 percent in Chittoor against 8.13 percent in Tirupati. Oral and cervical cancer cases were also higher in Chittoor, though Tirupati reported more breast cancer cases. Health officials attribute the rising trend of early-onset NCDs to lifestyle changes such as decreased physical activity, increased consumption of fast food, and extended use of mobile devices. Alarming increases in diabetes, hypertension, and even cancers among individuals under 30 have prompted the government to include cancer screenings, specifically for oral, breast, and cervical cancers as part of the NCDCD initiative. Once completed the survey will provide comprehensive information of the health profile of the people in the district to the health officials.
