Why had Wrexham's defence suddenly become so leaky? And is it fixed?

New York Times23-02-2025

A welcome step in the right direction after a midweek aberration or merely taking advantage of Mansfield Town's status as League One's worst team on recent form?
Only time will tell. But for Wrexham, it was a welcome three points as Phil Parkinson's side gave their automatic promotion hopes a timely boost with a deserved 2-1 victory.

Max Cleworth's second-half winner helped repair much of Tuesday's damage when nearly all of Wrexham's promotion rivals gained ground as they lost at home to in-form Leyton Orient.
Now, the gap to second-placed Wycombe Wanderers and that automatic promotion spot stands at three points, while nearest rivals Stockport County are four points behind in fourth, having played a game more.
Perhaps the most encouraging aspect on Sunday, however, was the control exerted by Parkinson's side, especially in a midfield that had to overcome the loss of Andy Cannon to a serious-looking knee injury in the first half.
This solid base provided by the energy of Ollie Rathbone and George Dobson helped the defence put in one of their more polished collective displays, certainly since Cambridge United's surprise 2-2 draw at the SToK Cae Ras on December 14 heralded a notable drop-off in form.
Up to then, Wrexham had by far the most miserly defence in League One after conceding just 11 goals in 19 league games — five better than Birmingham City and Huddersfield Town. This run also included a phenomenal 12 clean sheets.
Contrast that stingy record with keeping just two clean sheets in the subsequent 13 games, during which 17 goals have been conceded. Across the same period, Birmingham have let in just three goals and Orient and Wycombe have let in 10 apiece, while another seven clubs boast a better defensive record than Wrexham.
The graph offers a possible reason for this unwelcome swing. Featuring rolling expected goals against (xGA) versus actual goals conceded over that same period, it shows us Wrexham overperformed on the defensive front in the early months of this season (blue).
Certainly, the quality of chances created by the opposition suggests they should have scored more. That they didn't can be put down to a variety of reasons, including good goalkeeping (Arthur Okonkwo was in excellent form until breaking his wrist in early November), good defending or simply good fortune.
As the above shows, things have dipped in recent weeks, with Wrexham now conceding more than their xGA suggests should be the case (red). Again, this can be put down to a variety of factors, including how Okonkwo's form dipped sufficiently to be briefly taken out of the spotlight in the league by Phil Parkinson and replaced by veteran Mark Howard.

The form of those whose job is to protect the goalkeeper has also fluctuated in recent weeks, with Eoghan O'Connell being dropped in the wake of poor displays at Barnsley and Shrewsbury Town. He was replaced last month by Dan Scarr, who then lasted just two games before coming back out of the side as O'Connell was restored.
Lewis Brunt returned from injury at Crawley on February 1 after missing five games but missed out at Mansfield following a poor display on Tuesday, while even Cleworth, surely a leading contender for Player of the Year, has had his moments lately.
The plus for Wrexham comes via the old adage 'form is temporary but class is permanent', with O'Connell having featured in 11 of those 12 clean sheets in the league this season and Cleworth in 10.
Even allowing for the relative lack of clean sheets lately, Wrexham are still substantially over-achieving defensively with an xGA of 32.2 this season going into the Mansfield victory comparing favourably with the actual 25 goals conceded.
Wrexham were vulnerable down their right over Christmas, with six out of seven goals coming from that area. They largely plugged that gap only for another one to open up.
There were also two corners recently that led directly to either Okonkwo or Howard picking the ball out of the net.
No goalkeeper in the world would have stopped Bradley Ibrahim's 25-yard screamer for Crawley earlier this month. Or, as Parkinson put it afterwards: 'The lad won't hit another goal like that in his career.'
Also worth considering amid the frustration of this increase in goals conceded is the rolling 10-game xG (for and against), shown below, which tracks the quality of chances being created at both ends of the pitch.
This reveals Wrexham have still been creating more than the opposition, suggesting there wasn't a lot wrong and that an upturn in individual form, as happened at Mansfield with the back three, will bring the necessary results to stay in the promotion hunt.
Sunday was a step in the right direction, even allowing for how Ryan Longman lost Macdonald for the equaliser after Keanu Baccus and Jordan Bowery had found it far too easy moments earlier to open up the visitors down the left.
There was also a big let-off in first-half stoppage time after Macdonald again got away from Longman to hit a shot that Okonkwo initially spilt before pouncing on the bouncing ball.

Other than that, though, Wrexham were rarely troubled, with Seb Revan — like Longman starting his first league game in more than a month after Parkinson freshened up at wing-back — growing into the game, while Tom O'Connor slotted in well on his first league start since last month's Stevenage loss.
Cleworth could also be hugely pleased with his effort in both defence and attack, a fine display topped by a drilled finish to extend Mansfield's rotten run to eight defeats and just one draw in their last nine league outings.
'We got our decision-making right and that gave us great control,' says Parkinson. 'We're never happy when we lose and we certainly weren't after Orient. But we responded really well.
'Max was great today. Defensively good but he also stepped in with the ball. Him and Tommy (O'Connor) were progressive in staring attacks off for us, which is really key to how we play.'

Former Hearts and Hamilton Accies midfielder gives Airdrie top marks after doing his homework on move

Airdrie got full marks in Euan Henderson's homework on his next club, and he hopes to help the Diamonds get to the top of the class this season. Henderson, 24, left Hamilton Accies at the end of last season as a 15-point deduction for off-field offences pitched them into League One. Advertisement Looking around, Henderson reckons Airdrie are a good fit for him, and talking to boss Rhys McCabe sealed the deal. 'I studied teams around Scotland and Airdrie were the ones that suited the way I play,' said Henderson. 'From playing against Airdrie, watching them play, doing a bit of research on them, that was the main reason I wanted to sign for them. 'I felt wanted. That's always a big part in signing for a new team. The manager gives you the impression that he likes you, tells you where you're going to play in the team, and all of these things are good to hear. 'These things are good to hear, as a forward, because it suggests you're going to get loads of chances to score.' Henderson feels his new team-mates at Airdrie will help him to thrive, and vice-versa. He said: 'Airdrie suit the way I play, they have a young squad, and I'm looking to add my quality and strength to that as well. 'They try to play the right way, and it's a similar style to how I want to play. Advertisement 'Airdrie play progressive, attacking football, and being a forward that's what you want. 'I'm really pleased to be at Airdrie. I think it's a good place for me, a good platform to try and kick on. 'I think I'm probably one of the older ones in the team now, and I've got good experience and leadership qualities that I'm hoping to bring to the team. 'I'll help everyone around me so that we all do as well as possible.' Henderson admits last season at Hamilton was difficult, but says everybody in the squad has nothing to hide. Advertisement He said: 'It was a wee bit difficult, but all the boys had a clear conscience at the end of the day that we did our job and did enough to stay up. 'We said to each other that was all we could do, and it was just unfortunate that the circumstances turned out the way they did.' Henderson is looking forward to pre-season and has kept himself in shape. He said: 'I've been doing stuff in the off-season to make sure I'm ready for when you go back, which is important.' Ex-Blackburn Rovers player secures third club in 12 months after promotion miss

Former Blackburn Rovers defender, Tayo Edun, has joined League One promotion-chasers, Stockport County. Edun left Ewood Park in the summer of 2023 after making 28 appearances in two seasons, having fallen out of favour under Jon Dahl Tomasson. He moved to Charlton Athletic for a small fee, with bonuses if the Addicks were promoted. Advertisement Sadly for Blackburn, Edun left The Valley by the time Nathan Jones took Charlton back to The Championship. He joined Peterborough United on a short-term deal in January, impressing for Darren Ferguson's side. That made Edun hot property in League One circles this summer and Stockport have snapped him up on a two-year deal. He will be part of a squad that will hope to go one step better this term after losing in the play-offs last season. READ MORE: Blackburn Rovers transfer latest as club close in on second summer signing 'We are really pleased to secure Tayo's services for the next couple of years. He joins us at a great age, with experience of League One and Championship football, and was really motivated to join what we are doing here," Stockport Director of Football, Simon Wilson said. Advertisement 'He finished strongly at Peterborough last season and was in demand this summer so as a free agent this is good business for the club. I'm sure fans staff and teammates will make him feel very welcome as he settles in over the coming weeks.' 'Getting Tayo to the Club is a big coup for us. He comes at a great age, with brilliant experience, and is someone we feel can have a big impact on our team," manager Dave Challinor added. 'He's another player that has real adaptability in the positions that he plays, anywhere down the left-hand side, and he will add real quality to our group over the coming seasons. "We all wish him well as he starts what is hopefully a long, exciting and successful spell with us, and we are all really looking forward to working with him.'

Huddersfield Town have £1.5 million bid rejected for Ethan Galbraith

Huddersfield Town have had a £1.5 million bid rejected for former Manchester United midfielder Ethan Galbraith. The former academy product made one appearance for the Red Devils against FC Astana in the Europa League in 2019. Advertisement He could not force his way into the first team set up at Old Trafford and moved to Leyton Orient in 2023. The 24 year old has been one of the League One team's standout players this season and played a crucial role in them reaching the playoff final. They would sadly go on to lose 0-1 to Charlton Athletic. Galbraith scored six goals and provided eight assists in 51 games for Orient this season as he was an ever-present in their line-up. The Northern Ireland international's fine form has been recognised by Championship sides and Sheffield United and Swansea City have both been linked to the player in recent days. Advertisement The News Letter reports that 'League One outfit Huddersfield Town are the latest club to have a £1.5 million bid rejected for Northern Ireland star Ethan Galbraith.' The player is in high-demand as Charlton reportedly had a £1.5 million bid rejected last weekend for him. Leyton Orient's manager Richie Wellens has been full of praise for the former United man lately. He claimed that Galbraith 'is a Premier League player in the making and younger players who watch him can see how strong he is in his running. He's unbelievable and he's brilliant.' Wellens also stated that, 'we've got loads of young players that should be watching him and going 'he's intense there, he's always running, he's always at it'.' Advertisement Therefore, it will be interesting to see how long Leyton Orient can hold on to their rising star. The pressure to sell is only intensified by the fact that he has one year remaining on his current deal at Brisbane Road. Follow us on Bluesky: @
