TSCS, Fernandez Hospital team up for prenatal testing

The Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Society (TSCS) has partnered with Fernandez Hospital to launch prenatal diagnostic testing for couples identified as carriers of Thalassemia or Sickle Cell Anaemia. The testing will be offered at the Prenatal Diagnostic Centre at Kamala Hospital and Research Centre, a unit of TSCS in Hyderabad.
This initiative is part of TSCS's broader goal to eliminate births of children with Thalassemia Major and Sickle Cell Anaemia by 2035. The society's ongoing antenatal screening programme identifies carrier couples early in pregnancy. If both partners are carriers, there is a 25% risk in each pregnancy that their child will be affected. The new facility will allow for early prenatal diagnostic testing in such cases, enabling timely decisions for at-risk families, said a release.

He explained that while healthy red blood cells are typically round, in Sickle Cell Anaemia, these cells are crescent-shaped. He clarified that the disease is hereditary, passed from parents, and is not contagious. He added that the disease can be diagnosed through a simple blood test. He reassured that individuals with Sickle Cell Anaemia need not worry, as timely identification and proper medical care can significantly improve a patient's quality of life.

Hyderabad marks World Blood Donor Day with awareness drives, donations camps

Hospitals across Hyderabad marked World Blood Donor Day 2025 on Saturday (June 14) with awareness campaigns, donation drives and public engagements to highlight the critical need for voluntary blood donation. At Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), the day began with an awareness rally led by Sudhir Kumar, head of the Blood Donation Centre. Medical and nursing students, physiotherapy and paramedical trainees and hospital staff across departments participated. NIMS also inaugurated a new cold storage facility capable of storing up to 1,000 units of blood. The facility is expected to enhance the institute's ability to preserve blood components efficiently. Meanwhile, at Raj Bhavan, Governor Jishnu Dev Varma, who also serves as the president of the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS-Telangana), inaugurated a voluntary blood donation camp at the community hall on the premises. Addressing donors and volunteers, he described blood donation as a sacred service and spoke about its transformative impact on families during medical emergencies. He lauded the efforts of Red Cross volunteers, corporate CSR partners and institutional motivators in promoting a culture of safe and voluntary blood donation. The Governor also presented certificates to donors and honoured NGOs and institutional representatives for their contribution to the cause. Kamineni Hospitals, LB Nagar, organised a large-scale blood donation camp with a special focus on supporting children suffering from Thalassemia. Over 100 donors, including doctors, nurses, and staff, took part in the initiative. The hospital recognised volunteers, notably Dayakar Reddy, who has donated blood over 100 times and was felicitated for his commitment. Adding to the awareness efforts, B. Krupan Kumar, senior consultant physician at Apollo Hospitals, Hyderguda, issued a public message underscoring the life-saving potential of blood donation. 'Blood is the elixir of life, no cell in the human body can survive without it. In times of injury, trauma or medical emergency, blood donation can mean the difference between life and death,' he said.

Blood donation drive held in Anantapur

Anantapur: In a heartfelt display of service and solidarity, youth volunteers actively participated in a blood donation camp organised in Anantapur, marking the successful completion of one year in office for Dr Mansukh Mandaviya as Union Cabinet Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, and celebrating eleven years of transformative governance under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Organised under the guiding principles of Seva (Service), Sushasan (Good Governance), and Garib Kalyan (Welfare of the Poor), the camp was hosted at the RUDSETI Institute in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports' MyBharat Team, RUDSETI, Pragathi Padham Youth Association, and SR Educational Society. The camp witnessed enthusiastic participation from dozens of young blood donors, reflecting their commitment to social welfare, particularly towards supporting patients from economically weaker sections. The event was graced by key dignitaries including Anuradha, Deputy Chief Manager of NABARD; National Youth Awardee and MyBharat State Volunteers Coordinator Bisathi Bharath; Vijaya Lakshmi, Director of RUDSETI; S.
